Do You Need Gears on Your Tricycle or ETrike - Adult Tricycle with Speeds Necessary or Not?

I ride a 'muscle' trike, no battery just leg power. It's got 7 gears. The neighborhood around which I ride is basically flat ground and I'm often asked if I use my gears. You betcha. I seldom need my lowest gear unless there is a heavy headwind and/or a rare hill. I use my 7th gear when I want a little speed. Unfortunately I usually can't stay in 7th for very long unless I catch a good tailwind. 😊 (My legs aren't what they used to be.) Like you, I would highly recommend gears on a trike. But if you're really after speed, an etrike would be more suitable than a manual trike. If one is capable of riding a bike, that would be even better. On a trike though, just remember to slow down on the turns. 👍

While this is informative, it's difficult to tell how this bike will perform on hills. I've had to give up my 21-speed bike because at age 69, I've started to break bones when I fall (I've never had good balance but have ridden regularly for nearly 60 years). There don't seem to be any 21-speed trikes available, so I'm considering a 7-speed. However, I don't want to invest in a new trike only to find that the lowest gear won't let me climb hills. I really don't want to go the e-bike route. Unfortunately, there are no local dealers with trikes to try out.

the electric drive is separate from the pedal drive, so electric drive is one speed regardless on this model bike. I have seen homemade conversions where the bike can go dangerously fast. As for another person asking can you convert from single speed to multi geared pedal power, it will take lots of modifications cause of the way the axle is built, and brackets my need to be fabricated. Not always possible or cost effective.

What is the Max speed when your just paddling in 7th gear?

Approximately 16mph. But of course if someone has really exceptional leg strength it could be even faster. But we don't recommend over 16mph for safety.

You could, but it'd be complicated and probably be expensive. You'd have to check with a local bike shop.
