Do You Need Rain Gutters On Your House? Absolutely Yes You Do Even In Southern California!

Do you need rain gutters on your house? The answer is a big YES even in southern California! Rain gutters play a large roll in keeping water from damaging your property. In a perfect scenario a house should have rain gutters on all roof edges that terminate at the ground level into area drains that will then take the hundreds of gallons of water from the roof out to the city drains.
The worst case scenario is the home has no rain gutter system in place and no area drains are present around the home. And there is negative grade that means the ground around the house it pitched downhill toward the foundation.
This condition can result in the house foundation settling causing foundation cracks, As well as moisture intrusion under the home and accelerated deterioration of the foundation. If the property is sitting on expansive soil then the problem is a lot worse. Expansive soil has lots of clay so when it gets wet it expands and when it drys it shrinks causing the soil to move the foundation up or down or side to side. This condition can cause foundation cracks which will transfer into drywall or plaster cracks in the home.
Rain gutters need annual maintenance to insure they will work as intended. A clogged rain gutter or downspout will only cause more water damage to wood fascia boards and soffit areas. This condition will also cause damage to your exterior siding windows and doors.
Area drains around your home are equally important and are a recommended upgrade to your home to improve water control. I recommend contacting a qualified licensed drainage specialist to install drains if you do not have any. Area drains also require annual maintenance to insure they are not clogged with debris so be sure to check your drains the same time you check your gutters before rain season.

When it RAINS it pours regardless if u got gutters or not. Lol. Never seena gutter get the rain 10ft from the house foundation like many inspectors recommend.

Honest question. I watched your video. It makes sense the way you explained rain gutters. However, what I don’t understand is…what about the water falling around and beyond the rain gutters? I completely agree with having rain gutters on a two story house. Like the one you showed in the video, but what about a single story home?

The only thing you can do about the water falling outside the house perimeter is have area drains in the ground to help remove the water. Most older homes before the 1990's for example do not have area drains unfortunately. The goal is to keep as much water away from your foundation as possible. Gutters do not solve the problem they just help control it. Not to mention no gutters can really damage your siding.

Bro, that video has nothing to do with gutters. Rain gutters on that house would not fix that issue. It’s the pitch of the roof going to the house that’s the issue. If they had gutters they would still have that issue.
