This is my first day of watching you, and you're GREAT! I do dotting, not brush work. I always base-coat my rocks because it makes them smoother. I use a clear artist's varnish, followed by flat black or some other dark color, unmixed, right out of the bottle. That way if you have to fix a boo-boo, you can paint it over in the background color and try again. That happens more than I care to admit. Sometimes as I get into a work, I realize that it's all wrong and getting worse, in which case I can just base-coat it again and do it right next time. You don't want to waste a good rock! Generally, the best rocks have a very smooth grain, not rough at all. Those are the real keepers. Shaped like a pancake is ideal, but rare.

Wonderful tips! Especially using a flat color for touching up mistakes! That is very helpful. I love when I find the perfect rock to paint. I'm heading out soon for new ones. Always fun to dig through the pile :)

Yes!! Find one that is weather resistant and UV resistant. I still try to leave them where they won’t be in a puddle of water when it rains. Here’s more information - rockpainting101.com/how-to-seal-painted-rocks/

I understand rocks are porous and the colour gets sucked in over time. Not sure if this is true? Also, priming evens out the surface of the rock, which helps with the application of the paint and keeping your paint pens nibs healthier for a long time.

Once the paint is dry it should stay put! The rock can wear down your paint pen tips. Especially the fine tip ones.

Is Gesso better than a usual white acryllic paint for base coat on rocks? How about Mod Podge for smoothing out a rock? I hope to get an answer - thank you.
@RockPainting101
@RockPainting101 Жыл бұрын
I think Gesso is more expensive so I have never bought any... I always just use white acrylic. I know you CAN use Gesso though because others do with success. I have never used a medium to smooth my rocks. I know others have used putty/woodfillers. But I can't give any personal experience with that :)

Can i repaint a rock after using a clear spray coat on first
@RockPainting101
@RockPainting101 2 жыл бұрын
If it is a glossy finish you will have a hard time getting the paint to adhere to the rock. You should be painting your rock and then sealing it once it is completely dry.

Hi. I have another question. More on the top coat sealer--- when I use my paint pen or sharpie pens, I notice when I brush on Deco Art DuraClear Gloss Varnish it makes my pen lines almost dissappear.😢😢 😢

Since most paint pens are water based they can smear a bit when they get wet with a sealer. I would make sure that you give them ample time to dry. You can do a second coat if you want. But then follow the tips in this video for brush on sealers - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpXapqaarp10irs

@@RockPainting101 Ahh.. great thank you for the tip. How about the fine tip sharpies? Do you know if they would also "run" if brushed on sealer was used?

If applying a photo transfer, does the rock require a base coat before applying the gel medium? Or if the rock is light enough, is the gel medium application for photo transfer suffice before sealing? Thank you

@okamicookie Yes you want to use a base coat, let dry. Add photo transfer. Seal with a clear varnish.

Can i use a resin as a base coat on a rock and paint a letter after and then resin after that? Im trying to do a alphabet letters on each rock for my toddler
@RockPainting101
@RockPainting101 2 жыл бұрын
I don't use Resin on my rocks. We do have a guest post on the site and I know some of her rocks she uses up leftover resin on and then paints. But, you don't have to do a base coat before painting. If you are just doing them for your toddler I would do all the letters and just seal them well after. Resin would give you a nice thick coat!

I thought you also base coat your rock to seal it? You ca even clear coat it for the base. It helps to stop the paint from being absorbed into the rock surface.
