Would you believe us if we said that the best litmus test of any society's success is its attitude towards Israel? Well, it's true. As George Gilder explains, whether a society envies and resents Israel's success or celebrates and tries to replicate it is indicative of that society's progress. Countries that "pass" the "Israel Test" tend to rise. Those who don't tend to sink. So, does your society pass the "Israel Test"? In five minutes, find out.

How do you respond to people who excel you in invention, creativity, and wealth? Do you envy them? Do you feel their success somehow diminishes you? Or do you admire what they’ve achieved and try to emulate it?
These questions sum up what I call “The Israel Test.”
In the 1880s, European Jews settled in mandate Palestine and wrought an agricultural miracle in that desolate territory, then sparsely populated by a few score thousand Jews and a couple hundred thousand Arabs.
The Jewish settlers drained malarial swamps, leached salt from the soils, terraced the barren hills, and planted millions of trees. They massively expanded the capacity of the land and enabled it to support a substantial Arab population.
In the two decades between 1921 and 1943, Jews quadrupled the number of enterprises, multiplied the number of jobs by a factor of 10, and increased the level of capital investment a hundredfold. Far from displacing Arabs, they provided the capital for a major expansion of Arab farms and enabled a sevenfold rise in Arab population by 1948, to a level of 1.35 million, the largest in the long history of Palestine. In other words, the Arabs came to what would be soon be the State of Israel because of the Jews.
By comparison, Trans-Jordan, now known as Jordan, with the same geological endowment and four times the land but no Jews was able to sustain a population density only one tenth of the population density of Palestine.
Crucial to Israel’s accomplishments were world leading technological advances in the recovery of water through desalinization, drip irrigation, and sewage recycling.
Over the past fifty years, Israel has increased its population tenfold, its agricultural production sixteen fold and its industrial production fifty-fold while actually reducing net water consumption by ten percent since 1948. This huge expansion of effective water resources enabled the land to support not only more Jews, but also millions more Arabs.
Today the state of Israel with its astonishing achievements in computer science and other high tech fields distills both the genius of the Jews and the misdirected anger of the failed states that surround her.
The great divide in the Middle East is not between Arab and Jew but between admiration of achievement, along with a desire to replicate it, and envy accompanied by violent resentment.
People who admire success, who pass the Israel Test, tend to be wealthy and peaceful. People who resent achievement, who fail the Israel Test, tend to become poor and violent.

I worked for a Jew in Miami and thanks to his advise I have never lacked money. Every time I get paid I buy a few more bricks an build another wall for my properties. I have invested 10% of my income in myself. My boss taught me mathematics. He was a great man. He as a Jew and he was not greedy. He was frugal and saved his money. I keep most of the money that I earn and live a very good life. I admire people who succeed. I admire and respected people who speak several languages and now I speak French, Pashto, Japanese, Spanish English and feel very proud of having my degree. I think this video is the truth.

yeh just simplify peoples suffering for decades with simple words as envy and jealousy, just goes to show how easy it is to lead sheep in the direction you want it to. People these days make decisions of a certain issue within a couple of minutes of a youtube video, when instead they should research about the topic and find out the facts of the matter before making their decision. Its not jealously when your child's head is crushed under the building you have lived all your life, and its not envy when your son is shot by and israeli sniper. and its not

The jews lived in Palestine and owned legally "sold by Arabs" 7% of the land by 1948 and were doing perfectly fine with one exception: The arabs kept attacking them. At one point the jews got fed up and starting fighting back and established their state on 45% of the land but Arabs kept attacking and eventually things got to how they are now. @@superdoglogan This test isn't supposed to tell if you are successful in the art of war. It's supposed to tell if you are a good person or not. One of the reasons the Nazis succeeded so much was because they lied to all other nations in a cynical manner and ignored all treaties signed with them. Israel was simply much more alert of the Trojan horse that is Arab peace "treaties".

Usually when I see a masterpiece that's so much better than mine, my instinctive reaction is to feel a tinge of jealousy. But over time I learned to try to be positive. Instead of feeling jealous, I applaud the artist and think "Hey if they can do it, why can't I?" This thought process kept me going for a while now.

There seems to be a fine line between jealousy and admiration. To be honest I hadn’t thought much about it before. I confess that I get jealous of other people. I want to be prosperous and successful. I want to have the good life. But it is often that I am ungrateful fe what I have and I envy the success of others. I do admire success as well but that seems to be something I need to work at. I think gratitude and a spirit of kindness is part of what is required to admire the success and accomplishments of others. That in turn can help make us more successful as well as help us enjoy the good things we already have. I’m glad I listened to this video and read your comment as well as others. It has made me think.

Israel is amazing, as are her people. Whenever you see that bumper sticker "Coexist," know it is truly happening in Israel. I walked the streets of Jerusalem and was shoulder-to-shoulder with neighborly Jews, Muslims, Christians, and people of many different faiths and non-beliefs. I doubt a coexist bumper sticker on a car in any other country in the Middle East would go over very well. In Tel-Aviv we arrived right before the largest Pride fest weekend in the world. Have there been any pride fests in Syria or Egypt lately? Israel is a fascinating country. In Haifa, we visited the Baha'i Temple and gardens. The Baha'i followers were booted out of Persia (Iran), but the Israelis' said "Come on in! You're welcome here." I am a non-Jew with nothing but admiration for God's chosen people.

That's like saying it's okay to burn down an apartment building because a guy who murdered your parents might be in one of the rooms. That's not self-defense, that's excessive force. In this case, self-defense would be moving into Gaza with commandos or drones and eliminating the artillery permanently. Killing civilians can never be justified as self-defense, especially those who cannot escape.

Daniel Thomas They are still killing civilians! Maybe you don't care about needless destruction of innocent human life, but I see it as a big fucking problem. Israel has the Iron Dome, which, while not perfect, defends them from most incoming missile strikes. Gaza doesn't have that, and at least one hundred people, including civilians have been slaughtered because of it. I'm not defending Hamas. They can kiss my ass. I'm saying this bullshit needs to end. I'm sick of dumbass religious jackasses who can't get along because this one guy said a thing thousands of years ago different from this other guy who said something thousands of years ago, so instead of loving each other, we should all just blow the shit out of each other. Israel stole Palestinian lands and then are surprised when Palestinians hate them. Palestinians allow terrorists to take control, then wonder why Israel hates them. They are both at fault, they are both responsible, and they both need to just chill the fuck out. When you hear someone say that religion causes suffering, THIS is what they are talking about. Any conflict or violence that rises from religion is bullshit and you know it. I'm done with the apologetics.

Robert Hawke "They are still killing civilians!" No they aren't. See when you are being attacked from all sides & these civilians just look on, not trying to stop it, they stop being civilians & become complicit in the actions of there sovereign nations. If you want this civilians to stop being killed than the answer is simple: Stop attacking Israel from a position of safety.... In fact just stop the attacks altogether... After all, there is no reason for it except envy at a group of people who are better than there neighbours.

Then I reflected on myself, and I failed on many situations not only in my past but my present, possibly my future. I am an Arab, but Canadian first. Growing up I had much resentment for Israel, for I am Palestinian, and I knew why tho I was miss guided. I would often spout that any man can turn a tropic to a desert but real men turns a desert to a tropic. That is what Israel did for the middle east that is what the west is doing for humanity.... arguably We must all work at fixing ourselves and stop lying to our neighbors. With that being done, there is no time left to throw stones.

Salaheddine020 The Arabs did come falling from the sky. The arabs were the majority for many years but for many years Israel was almost empty because the condition of the land were terrible. The arab majority were a pretty small number of people. At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the twentieth Century century the Jews came to Israel from Europe and started developing the land. At that point Arabs from different countries (Egypt, Syria ect.) came to Israel because they saw a financial potential. They knew that if the land is in a better condition the economy will be better so they came to find jobs. Jobs who were created thanks to the work of the Jews.
@Salaheddine020
@Salaheddine020 9 жыл бұрын
mixuxim42 You are rewriting history and using bogus arguments to defend ethnic cleansing and stealing of land by zionists. It is a fact that before 1930/20 90% of the palestine was populated by Palestinians, muslim and christian. The remaining 10% are the 'others', including a significant jewish percentage. The Palestinians are not only the descendants of the Arab conquerors of the seventh century but also from indigenous peoples who had lived in the country since time immemorial, including the ancient Hebrews and the Canaanites before them. So the words Palestine and Palestinians describe the people who have always lived in the land we call Palestine even though in te past they had different names. Like Italians we used to call the Romans. The whole story of having a better economic situation is totally irrelevant. Never have I heard: We the Palestinians want the gold of the jews or we did not care about our land until we saw the jews prosper (only thanks to US and UK). What I have heard is, my grandfather has the key to his house in Jaffa (tel aviv). They just want their land and their olive trees. Stop using the excuse of developing the land to excuse ethnic cleansing and stealing of land.

On patrol in Jabalya, a small city in Gaza While patrolling a side street with 3 three other soldiers we had a group of 20 to 30, 7 to 8 year old Arab children following after us throwing mud and stones at us, never very accurately or forcefully. They would also as small children do, run close to us tempting us to catch them. They were very fast and we seldom caught them. When we did the sergeant would tell them in Arabic, “ You should be ashamed of yourself, why are you not in school”. I didn’t think he was bridging the culture gap. One afternoon while patrolling that same street, we had the normal bunch of kids behind us. We found it was far easier to ignore them rather then catch them. But, on that day we passed a coffee house were several male Arab adults were sitting. They saw what the children were doing and began to yell at them, the children yell back. This went back and forth several times an escalated to trading insults. Then the adults told us in Arabic and gestured to us to shoot the children. These children were related and known to these adults. After the patrol, I check with the sergeant, who spoke Arabic, not believing what I saw. He confirmed to me, that the adults had told us to shoot their children. I don’t understand how anyone can live peacefully next-door to neighbors like that. Today I understand. This is just not true. The chosen people are the one that accept Jesus. They don't, so they are just traitors to God's covenant. Nothing more. But the mediocre christians worship them, they are their idol. Even the jews hated Christ (as well and their prophets, which they killed), because He doesn't wanted to make them great kingdom, He has His own Kingdom...nothing like their nationalism.

+sergiomarchelli While that aspect is true, Israel is the direct ancestor of Abraham, to whom the Covenant of the same was promised to him and his posterity forever; that if they obey the Lord's commandments and keep their covenants, He will bless them with posterity as numerous as the sand of the earth and that they all will be blessed with the priesthood. The Hebrew people have been chosen from the beginning, whether they accept or reject the Messiah. If that's not what you see, then I'm happy to agree to disagree, because those are my beliefs.
@sergiomarchelli
@sergiomarchelli 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry but this is not simply true. First of all Abraham was not the only one from the faith, and we can see easily this that he gave to Melchizedek gifts as to superior (he was image of Christ, but he was priest, human being, living at that time). Also the Noah's children all knew God and after the flood long before there were jews, the people worshiped God. The paganism is later "invention" or distortion of the true teachings. Also the be jew, or heber have spiritual meaning, as is said that the flesh gives nothing, and St. Paul makes it very clear that the real jews are the one that follows God not by blood. Even St. Paul says that for him to be jew is nothing compared to the living path of Jesus. Also other wide spread delusion is that the christianity is some kind of jewish sect. This is not true. The christianity have nothing in common with judaism and we can see clearly this by seeing that the Jesus teaching were not accepted and understood by the jews, but by the gentiles. Even St. Joan says it is like "satanic synagogue".

Aristotle's, I'm referring to the Palestinians who have lived and farmed the land for hundreds perhaps thousands of years. You should read "The Generals Son" by Miko Peled, because you're repeating a lie. No one tried to crush Israel. Miko uses IDF archive to prove that it was Israel that attacked its neighbours. The attack was unprovoked and more than likely was based on acquiring (stealing) more land. You should be aware that Palestine has been populated from at least 10,000 years.

To be honest, and this might be an unpopular opinion; I think those who consider themselves Palestinian people are better off being allies with the Israelis over a majority of the other Arab states. Not even a lot of the other countries like they - I believe there are laws banning Palestinians from becoming citizens of other countries, "In the effect that they take back their state." Sure Israel is not perfect - but no country is perfect in the world. Still a pretty good country. If the Palestinians presented a new leader who actually wanted peace with Israel, and the others were willing to actually put down their arms, I could see a Palestinian state of some kind forming and even becoming strong allies with. It almost feels like though that this fight is egged on by the rest of the outside world - both the Arab nations and the UN on both sides - in order to benefit and gain power from it. Its quite sad. Then again, this is just my opinion, and its probably very naive. I just wish I could hope for that, a treaty ending the fight for good. One called the Treaty of Caanan, the original name for the land of Abraham.

Carly L You clearly understand allot in this topic, I am Israeli working in a company that has allot of mutual work with many Palestinians mainly from the West Bank, We openly discuss politics and many other topics freely even the most harsh ones like a recent murder by a Palestinian stabber or an I.D.F soldier killing like open minded people. A great and defiantly powerful nation can emerge if the Israelis unite with the Palestinians. (Which is like 25%~ already true?) some Palestinians especially the new generation starts to prosper in Israel and realize that a unity can actually do much better then being divided especially in such a small geographical zone. "both the Arab nations and the UN on both sides - in order to benefit and gain power from it. Its quite sad. " The UN/Arab nations defiantly playing with it a lot to stay in power (mainly the Arab leaders) a common enemy unites people but when it disappears other topics start emerging and that's a very dangerous zone for the Arab leaders so they push the agenda that Israel is the biggest enemy of the nation and brainwash its population to stay safe in their million dollar homes while the rest suffer.

I think that as there is some truth to this controversial issue, I think it is undeniable that the reason for the resentment of the Arabs is that they were displaced. The Jews were given land as a part of reparation after the traumas their group faced during the Second World War. The decision to give them this land was a hasty one made by the US, UK, and other European countries. The fact that they were displaced, hindering their own personal success instilled a sense of resentment. This situation could be mirrored at how other groups were inherently silenced throughout the years. A notable example includes the Native American population being displaced by the colonists back in the 1700s, and other conquests that major world powers went for throughout history. As this is one way of looking at this argument, there is a whole other side that must be explored, the history that stems from the problems that the western hemisphere has created in the middle east.

There are several verses that are not anecdotal that instruct Muslims to kill the Jews wherever he finds them, to not take infidels as his friends, etc. You may want to have a second look, and don't give me some bullshit about reading the English version. I'm sure Allah (pfuh) can make his word be known in a language other than Arabic.

Personally, seeing someone achieve something I couldn't doesn't bother me the slightest. What does bother me is when someone else does something I know for a fact I could have done myself, perhaps even better than them. But instead of resorting to violence, or hating the person who out-achieved me, I take it as a challenge. From that point on, I can be motivated solely by desire to prove my ability and self worth to work as hard as ever, restless, for days. In fact, at that point it's not even about proving myself to someone else. I simply won't be able to rest until I know I've achieved what's best of my abilities.

I do often react to the success of others with envy, and resentment. But I know it's wrong and I squash it with the knowledge that it does only harm. To myself and to those around me. I force myself to congratulate success with as much internal sincerity as I can, and try then to go and do likewise. It's hard to be a good human sometimes, but do it anyway. It's just feelings, they can be adjusted with awareness and intent. I don't know if this is the full answer to Middle East troubles, but it's definitely a good personal test.

I really love underdog stories, so a group of people enslaved and treated horribly throughout most of history and then coming out of it with their own nation which has prospered is incredible and quite inspiring, striving to be more like Israel would make the world a more "efficient" place (note the word I used) so it doesn't matter how much propaganda the Leftist and Mulsim media try to spew to attack Israel I truly think their existence is one of the few reasons I still have some faith in humanity.

There is no doubt that they were able to turn the desert into a success and as a farmer I have a great admiration. My problem is, what they are doing to this country. They want to be treat as a victim that can not be criticized no mater what. Well there has been many other populations that have been emaciated on this earth; Ukrainians (WW I), Cambodian, Chinese, including the American Indian. They don't go around demanding that special privilege, victim status. These people have infiltrated our government CIA, MI6, and all of our lettered agency. They are in charge of just about everything and are beyond reproach. They are justifying their success in Israel to give themselves the right to run our country. Is that because they are better at it?
