I'm a BJJ practitioner and Muay Thai as well. I'm glad you created this video showing the realities of martial arts. Many people don't realise the tool they all are for a fight. I have been a fan of wing shun for a while. The reason well the great power it displays in the short distance. Another aspect I enjoy from it is the speed and natural flow of the fight it teaches you. Thanks for sharing this video.

Well, maybe in the Leung Ting system, but there's a whole branch of Wing Chun that focuses on long range moves. It's called long bridge. Actually, the attacks look similar to boxing.

This is completely true. As I go throught in my Wing Chun training, I feel more and more self-confident and I don't feel scared if I see someone who potentiatlly could attack me or my family. Now I know I could inflict serious damage with a couple punches and kicks and that's all that matter in a real life situation: to be safe and to protect yourself and the ones you care about. Nice video :D

Good work on the video. You seem to have a solid understanding of the art. It's also very nice to see other people that understand that Wing Chun (like any other style) is not static and adapts well to situations when a person is properly trained. It's unfortunate that there are so many ignorant people watching too much MMA and think that makes them expects on fighting arts. I think people really need to become less close minded and appreciate good technique anywhere they can find it. At the end of the day it's not the style but the practitioner that will win a fight, and those that can adopt good technique from any style are far better off. Go into every learning situation with an empty cup and analyze the lesson after. As my Sifu always says, "A half empty pail makes a lot of noise." Keep up the good work

First of all nice video, very explanatory about martial arts not just bjj or wing chun. It's very simple, if your sifu, sensei, master etc.. when you get on the first classes don't tell you that martial arts are for defense purpose, if they don't talk about the art itself in some classes, they only show the technics well you have to ask yourself if that teacher is a good one. Martial arts have 2 understandings, the technics and the philosofy, you must understand both to get the most of if and understand how it really works with logic. I did Karate when I was young on my 7y and my sensei sad "If you show up with bruises I'm gonna talk to your parents to see what happen" Basicly he was saying to us that if we fight outside classes we probably going to get suspended from the classes. Martial arts if you are going to learn them in a good way, you are going to become a better person year after year, you will understand the more you know how to fight the less you will need. Personaly there are some styles of fighting I don't consider martial arts, like boxing, kick box but they provide something that others don't like any other art. But if you watch closely wing chun, aikido, judo, silat, bjj, muay thai, you will notice some things are almost the same, it's like the root of that technics and philosophy has spread. Thanks again for this video! :)
@Leterian

i appreciate your comment, reading this gives me faith that there are other martial artists outside my place which do not just train to fight, but practice to learn. I've been practicing Tae Kwon Do for 12 years, but i changed to Wing Chun because it suits me and my personality more. I don't do this to beat up people, i do this for me and my vitality, but more to understand the philosophy of what i am actually practicing. Don't get me wrong, i am not afraid to use it to defend myself and my beloved ones, i had to a few times unfortunately. But i live by the motto "avoid a fight if it's avoidable, but fight if you must", and luckily i was able to avoid carnage several times too, if it means to back off of an upcoming fight with no reason at all, then so be it. Thanks again for your wise words. And nice video btw.

Although I am not a specialist (only been practicing Wing Chun for 15 years), the guy doing this video got some points right. Firstly, when you get to understand painful the things you learn can be to the one who endures them, you definitely don't want to have to use them. Also, we got tought that street fight nothing like sparring or ring fight with rules: you never know the person who will attack you, nor when, nor when, nor how, nor how many there will be. Winning a fight is 98% luck, maybe 1% martial art knowledge and 1% natural reactivity/speed/strengh/psychology/focus/accuracy. So much to this "I do this martial art, no one can hurt me!"-matter... He also got a good point in telling that Wing Chun is like a tool, I might even say a toolbox: you take what you need, discard what won't work and add your personal touch to it. There are three technician graded persons at the school I'm training and they developed their own "personalty"; training with either of them is completely different from training with the others. Our sihing also has a whole different way to do his thing. Well, as for me, I still have a long way to go but I've already started to study what's best to me regarding how my body and mind behave. I first wanted to learn Wing Chun in order to be able to fight and defend and control myself. Now, the only thing that keeps me training is simply that I want to improve my mind and health and get as far as I possibly can. And I would be glad if I could live my whole life through without having to get involved in a fight.

Unfortunately, even many who "teach" WC lack understanding of intent and application. The movements are empty without intent and "idea". Most rely on muscle, then graduate to structure. The true Wing Chun user uses the idea [mindful expression of inner energy].

This part 2 video is waaay better then the first one, this one I like it and agreed with it. I myself do Judo wich consists of grappling standing up and down to the ground, and I have some curiosity about learning Wing Chun, the problem is that here in Brazil, its hard to find a good teacher of wing chun which I trust not to be terrible at wing chun. I'll probably learn some boxing in the future, which in my city (Salvador, Bahia) has a lot of really good gyms and made some champions on boxing and MMA . But I would love to learn Wing Chun with a apropriate Sifu. Thanks for the video.

I have been training in the arts for 30 years in many variations ..whats said in the video is very true. learn to fight so you don't have to ! plain and simple!! but when it comes to different styles not every one can adapt, that is why there is many different variations of Karate, Kung-fu, Ju Jitsu etc. learn one, practice it! master it! and use it in everyday life such as the focus, Discipline & Respect for others as well as yourself, use it to gain confidence and just because you are a Black belt doesnt mean you have to flaunt it, really in the world we have today, no one cares what rank you are, you have to apply yourself , remember stay away from bad situations, use your art if your backed into a corner simple as that...

Wing chun is an excellent, highly evolved martial art. It is for self-defense. MMA is a SPORT. it has a lot of rules, it is scored in points if the match isn't decided by a KO or tapout. It has a ref that makes sure people follow rules, violate rules lose points. Self-defense is real, has no ref, has no rules, no time limit, no belt. Sure one can use MMA for self defense, but a person like me was never going to be an MMA jock. I was never going to fight for points or fun. I studied to be able to protect myself in this life. I have been in 2 real-life fights in the last 30-some years and am 2-0. THAT is all that matters.

@Robert C. Christian Yeah, I agree that traditional wing chun has one massive flaw, It doesnt incorporate ground work/ grappling and as a result, when faced against bjj users they get fucked. I agree with everything you said however. BUT there is one thing you gotta take into consideration: Wing Chun in those times were designed for use against other chinese martial arts. Since then many years have passed and as a result, Sifus such as my respectable Sifu, Gary Mckenzie, have adapted and evolved Wing Chun in order to both, cover it's weaknesses and to also make it for suitabvle for use in our current society. For example, My Sifu emphasises ALOT on punching hard and fast and sticking to simple parrying techniques (such as pak sau or Tan sau) instead of complex ones such as bong sau or kwan sau. He also takes into account grapples and grabs and how to use wing chun to counter them Here is a video advertising both his school and his evolved Wing Chun that he teaches: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epWmhXeHq8mBi7M I personally agree with you and think Sifu's should be evolving Wing Chun in order to make it MORE useful and to cover its weaknesses.

An awesone video, loved it. Thank you. Many people judge the book by its cover. Whenever a bigenner Wing Chun martial artest loses a fight people start talking trash. On the other hand, when a master in Wing Chun beats up another martial artest the same people start to rethink their judfment again. Isn't that with due all respect stupid. Seaech high and low before judging something or just never judge. I'm a fan of Wing Chun and I respect all other martial arts. It all depends on the fighter.

I'm not going to bash on Wing Chun, I respect it and did it myself but this is my take on Wing chun's effectiveness: Background: started with judo and boxing> kickboxing>did wing chun because it was right next to me (and one of the only wc school in Belgium) I liked the lessons and actually did learn to see from a different perspective and learned some techniques, but like most people, the lack of sparring was the reason that I quit. Now does that mean I'm saying you shouldn't do WC at all? No, definitely not. I think it's great for the group of people who definitely don't like other styles because it's too aggressive. Most of the people there were the typical boys or men,girls/woman who lacked physichal fitness, a bit obese or very skinny etc. I think that WC can give them confidence, knowledge and techniques to atleast defend theirselves against untrained people. So WC can be effective for the right people. As for myself, for the people who want the most effective styles and don't have a problem with sparring and aggressiveness i would recommend : Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay thai, MMA , i recommend striking arts first because it's faster to use in real situations. As for more grappling arts it's Brazilian jiu jitsu > optional (for example: judo)

So much respect for this comment. i hate when people instantly assume since it isn't in the ring. it doesn't work. it also bothers me when UFC is considered where real martial artists play, no, UFC is a sport competition with rules. Theres so much more to martial arts than throwing a punch. The amount of detail orientation that's needed is insane. it's so Similar to mathematics that it alongside mathematics are my two favorite passions. I currently practice Bear style Kung fu, and tried Judo for a bit (love it.) My dojo also offers Combat Aikido and boxing. I hope to learn from them also one day.

Your insight strikes me as SO ON TARGET that I provided a link to it on my page. My only constructive criticism is that integrity is key to the philosophy of Wing Chun, and therefore publicly declaring anyone to be a "fraud" is not representative of this key ingredient of integrity. I encourage you to utilize your wording carefully, such as by saying, "I strongly disagree with the perspective that Wing Chun involves brute force, but rather, it involves speed, a direct line of attack, a state of being relaxed, and precision." In this manner you do not "deface" or publicly humiliate anyone.

Any martial artist that actually understands the martial arts as a WEAPON. It isn't fair or nice. That's why I like Wing Chun, it's speed, fluidity and grace masks a very brutal martial art. Despite its brutality there is a nobility.

The most important thing is to hit and relax after that. If you hit being stiff, the force of the impact comes back in the arm and is split 50% for you, 50% for your opponent. If your arm is relaxed, then the hit is fully transfered to your opponent because the force needs firm path to travel. :)

I loved this and the first video, you are very didatic. Congratulations. I'm in love with wing chun for a while but there isn't any nearby teacher or gym... do you think possible to learn by videos? If you think it is, can you give some material for beginners? thanks

It is possible if you have a training partner and you study a lot. The idea is to watch every video you can on KZbin and select the ones you prefer and that matches your style.

Ok I'm a boxing fan and wing chun fan and I can tell you this, if you know Roberto Duran, and you saw 9:13 you might of remember that he used something similar in his fights, he'd feel his opponents when they where very close, go look at his fight against palomino, there heads where closes up and without looking he could sense what was coming just by keeping his hands close to his opponent, also go look at the mayweather video where he shows his defence he's wearing a tank top, if any one here knows wing chun then when you watch that video you'll see some similarities in some of his defence and wing chun, just type in mayweather demonstrates his defence, he's with a white guy.

This video is so well explained but there's still misunderstanding... Just like Einstein said, ",,, can't teach a fish how to climb a tree..." Sports, martial arts and education make you a better person, this is not about Wing Chun, it's about martial arts. Talk about any sport, it's kinetic energy, leverage and mental wellness and therefore philosophy. For instance, in tennis, they say "hit fast, don't hit hard"... so kungfu, Wingchun, Karate, Taekwondo, Tai chi.... They had known and applied the kinetic energy hundreds of years ahead, admirable!

Very great video ! ^^ But i think you mixed some different martial art, all is not wing chun style, there is some video of systema and probably panchak silat. I think there is some similitude it's true about the distance and some combinaison but wing chun style learn a solid posture (you "can't moove your shoulder) like the karate while the systema learn a other vision of fight, really not traditional. I hope a day we will see this type of martial art at the UFC but for that, they should have some transformation to be usefull, at this distance fighter pref use them lute, who is really an americain sports and report much point for judge. Thank for this video. I hope you will continu ! :)

I am currently studying wing chun and I hope to train BJJ after or during. I would like to be a well rounded fighter and might even get into some other styles after. The key is to have a strong balance between different styles because you never know what you're going to end up having to use. To the people that are saying wing chun is useless, you are wrong. If you practice and train with other people and spar it could become quite useful. If you don't train by sparring your technique will most likely go to shit in a real fight.

I think that u totally understand the meaning of VT but I think that many of the vids that u showed aren't that good for showing the practice of VT i'm from germany and I train since I was 13 years old VT and I came to this MA because my trainer is a good friend of phillip bayer and once he was at our training center he showed us chi sao and it was totally diffrent to the chi sao that the two kids were doing (great moves btw) because the chi sau tht their were doing was the western WT chi sao the western WT was designt from former western MA teachers that combinet kenpo karate with the traditional VT I think tht u did a really good job by making these videos and I really enjoy to see them so I would say weiter machen from germany :)

I'd love to learn real wing chun, but I feel like it's a rare thing to seen and taught in the USA. I think it'd be great to add into the muay thai I'm learning, some long range kicks and boxing with a close range defense as well. It's one of the most beautiful martial arts, aesthetically as well, so smooth.

Yes, you can find some good teachers but to be honest, there is less than 10-15 in the whole world. You will need to travel if you want to learn the "real" thing as you say.
