The parallels between Wing Chun and Aikido are incredible and often unrecognised. The idea of disrupting balance and moving your opponent without retreating are one and the same, as well as centre line and circular movement concepts. There's no greater joy than training with an instructor who's loving what they're doing.

Not downplaying the choreography, because it was amazing in those movies but that's about it lol. They're movies. Historically inaccurate movies about a wing chun trainer who didn't do 90% of what is claimed in the movies. It's mostly Chinese Propaganda, especially when a supposed 70-year old Ip Man defeats a United States Marine lol. A lot of wing chun is conceptual with little application applied outside its own bubble. They mostly defend agsisnt other wing chun attacks, or agsisnt really slow and static boxer opponents. It's a cool art form and some concepts can be used to help sharpen some fine motor skills but it should not be relied on as a self defense combat. It's not very practical.

I practice Karate (Kyokushin) so am not here as a Wing Chun fan-boy. I believe Wing Chun ‘IF’ taught and practiced correctly, is a very very effective art, perfectly suited to street self defence. The ‘IF’ I threw in there is due to how Wing Chun is too often watered down here in the UK, where they insist that live sparring is not allowed as the art is ‘too dangerous’. This renders practitioners with skill, but little to no live fight courage, which is a dangerous thing in my mind...

Sparring with high kicks and boxing and intense ground fighting and grabbling is part of the style i learn. Wing chun isn‘t just traditional, the style is inventing in many forms. And yes it could be really dangerous.

You put it in a simple and correct way. The issue is not Wing Chun system. The issue is that most of instructor use save face policy and don't fight in their life nor let their students do so. So 99.9999% of their art is theories... I know this because I have been practicing for a decade and witnessed so many schools in different countries.

This man is an artist who is willing to share his martial art experience to teach people how to defend themselves against an attacker (s). He is only sharing what he think is the best techniques for his students. This the age of commercial advertisement. If you don't show what you have, people won't know what you're willing to share. Let's face time is money. If this man is willing to spend his time teaching something he likes to teach in this world, he should be able to earn a living.

Wing Chun is one hell of a Martial Art, very difficult to apply it when fighting, especially against boxers. Thats why I HIGHLY recommend WC practitioners to train there striking and reaction speed regularly and coordination. Also for your own sake, take the time to condition your arms, hands and legs.

for people that believe wc fails because there is no sparring....well I've done sparring in wc and it usually lasts about 15 seconds or less. and sparring works against the main principle of defeating your opponent as fast as possible. if sparring takes more than 15 seconds then it would actually be conditioning you to lose. you have to do it for at least a year to fully grasp it. i quit because my instructor stunk.

Almost every time you see some Kung Fu KZbin tips videos you get armchair "Kung Fu experts" commenting. How it wouldn't work in situations 1, b and C. :) And some one usually says "...I'm from the streets...". Most "street fighters" or "street fights" involve wild swinging like mad and gassing themselves out in a few minutes. One gets stabbed. the other goes for a beer. Cops come. He gets arrested. Usually. Rarely will you find or see a "good street fighter"..in shape, knowing some "street fighting moves", experienced...I always have believed it's better to know something than nothing. And Sifu Leo Au Yeung looks to be doing a good job in this video explaining the correct way...not all masters bother to do so. And I respect him for going to Russia to learn some Systema. And is not from the "my style is the only style school of thinking".
@SlayerofFiction8 жыл бұрын
As someone who has been in far more street fights than anyone would believe, who later competed in Kick Boxing, I am here to say you nailed it. It is important for people to remember Police receive very minimal training in hand to hand, and they do just fine against the bulk of perps. Indeed, anything is better than nothing.
@AGC8288 жыл бұрын
SlayerofFiction Plus, the police are people too. It's not like in the movies where all cops move like Jason Bourne. Some overweight and clearly out of shape. They usually try not to get into empty hand-to-hand combat or restraining. They usually have guns, baton, stun guns...etc. Call for help (if they had a brain). How often have we seen on the news 6 cops on one man? :) An unarmed man at that.
@SlayerofFiction8 жыл бұрын
Anderson C ha ha, well when I was bartending I saw several cops on one man fairly often honestly. It was irritating to toss someone out and have the police showing up have a big tadoo. Most are chickenshit to be honest. With that said I stand by my statement. As a aged I realize I am not always going to be the strongeste, fastest bad ass on the planet, so my opinions are vastly changing. I would also like to point out that people can way more often than not use what is between their ears to get out of trouble.
@AGC8288 жыл бұрын
SlayerofFiction Agreed. In most cases cops ARE as you said "chicken shits". In Toronto, where I'm from, there was an incident involving a crazed man on a bus. They had gotten every one out. It was just this guy they were trying to get off the bus and cuff. One cop ended up emptying 5 rounds into the kid I think killing him. The kid only had a screw driver. Could they not have over powered him? There were at least 6 officers there. How about tazer? Gas granade? Tons of non-lethal alternatives. ::P Most cops are wimps and cowboys. Itching to pull their triggers. And the kicker is these guys make 6 figure /yr salaries in Toronto. :P
@SlayerofFiction8 жыл бұрын
Anderson C Holy shit that is some coin! Police are paid well here, although they belly ache constantly. I took the state trooper test, everyone cried about how hard the bookword was. I will be clear, if you graduated high school and cannot pass it you suck. I have been out of school over two decades and I thought it was incredibly easy. The wash out rate was high and funny as hell : P OH I did not get the job as they wanted former Military, so that is where they went. It is Ironic, as in Denmark for instance if you were in the Military you cannot be a cop, they feel you have the wrong mentality.

Makes sense. In line with the teachings of Paul Vunak, how isometric [tendon] strength works - restricted to a limited spot (angle). In order to increase the strength throughout the arc of movement, you have to practice the strength of your elbow (or any other joint) by burdening it in a whole row of angles. Normally you complete this arc of motion in regular gym practice by flexing dumbbells; but this is a dynamic practice and not an isometric one. In theory you can combine these modes of practice in one motion and gain both tendon and muscle strength.

His bong cao technique is actually lifting the arm in the 1st punch he blocks. This would tire out the shoulder and stress the supraspinatus tendon which abducts the shoulder. I was taught that bong cao should push forward primarily, like a boat cutting through water. Technically the angle and contact point is good, but the direction of 1st contact is asking for trouble. Yes Evasion is the highest technique, but that 1st bong sau is not the best hand to use for that attack.

Wing Chun dates its creation to the reign of the Emperor Kangxi. After escaping the destruction of the Fujian Shaolin Monastery by Qing forces, the Abbess Ng Mui fled to the distant Daliang mountains on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan. She came upon a fight between a snake and a crane. She took the lessons she learned from observing the fight between the two animals and combined them with her own knowledge of Shaolin kung fu (Assuming what you are talking about) to create a new style.

It looks like when he is doing Bong Sau, he does not use the immovable elbow, but let's his elbow fly up horizontal to the ground. I will say, I do like how he was making sure they understood to do it as a soft style. It actually makes it tons better as soft as opposed to hard. Seen some schools teach W.C. only hard and when doing so they do not realize how much they disadvantage themselves. Also there are ways to do soft style while making things hurt as if you are doing a hard style. W.C. is not memt to be a power against power style. It is designed to be soft and by reading your opponent intent to use it agsinst your opponent. In many ways it teaches you to see and read openings as well as how to make openings agsinst your opponent, that most would not see. Then to quickly, easily, effortlessly take advantage of any opponing your opponet unknowingly gives up.

I wonder of these students understand how insanely difficult it is to block and deflect an incoming punch. It is like trying to hit a missile with another missile. That is why you almost never see boxers do it; they try to get out of the way instead. They slip, duck or, if they have to, try to block with their gloves or forearms. I am not saying it cannot be done. I am just saying it would take an astonishing degree of speed, timing, and precision to pull it off in reality.

+Frank “BandoGodofFrankBlock” White I'm not sure I agree with you having trained in many different martial arts over 25 years including boxing, the average boxer who trained 6 months or more and are below cruiser weight will be able to throw at you between 2 to 4 punches per second, and can continue this for a long duration so If you dodge one from a side step you have another load of jabs coming at you even before they throw the power shots, they will also not just stand in one place all the time while you are stepping forward at them. however if you are absolutely confident that what you are saying will work, I would say go down to your local boxing gym and ask the trainer if he would let you try some hard sparring using your style vs the boxers. they will usually let you do that.
