Are Leaf vacuums worth it? Today we review the DR Power Pilot XTSP. The Pilot XTSP is the swiss army knife of yard machines; it vacuums, mulches and has a built in chipper shredder. How much time does it save you? Watch and see.
This video was a paid sponsored video by DR Power to show you the capabilities of the Pilot XTSP. Check out the product by clicking the link
bit.ly/3ug41rN
The Pilot XTSP is a self propelled leaf and lawn vacuum that vacuums, mulches / shreds, and pushes the material into DR’s direct bagging system. Each bag is capable of holding up to 50lbs of materials.
The leaf and lawn vacuum comes equipped with: 4.3 HP (173 cc) DR OHV Engine with electric start (recoil backup), Uses standard paper leaf bags and a leaf bag caddie capable of holding up to 10 bags. There is an onboard chipper: handles sticks and branches up to 1.5” in diameter. The front end of the leaf vacuum has an Intake height: 1” to 4”. Features Never flat wheels, 8” x 2” (front), 10” x 2” (rear) and an all-steel impeller with a Lifetime Warranty. Overall the machine weighs 120 lbs and comes with a 2 year engine and machine warranty.
The machine is quick and easy to assemble, as most of the machine comes pre assembled. Changing bags was faster than I anticipated. The onboard chipper shredder is super useful and speeds up yard clean up. The chipper shreds branches into very small pieces. The pilot xtsp shreds leaves down to size which in return allows you to save a lot of space when gathering and throwing away the mulched materials. The biggest benefit that I found was the time savings. Jobs that took 3 hours without using a leaf vacuum are now taking 45 minutes from start to finish.

So I have one of these (the non-self propelled version). It works decently, but ONLY in a specific way. Dry/single layer of debris, you're good. If you're leaves are damp or there are multiple layers of them, it's instant chute plugging. I do appreciate that the unit is lightweight which is good if you're out trying to use it on damp ground (as we are here in the mid-west during this time of year). It is a BEAST to start. Thankfully it typically starts on the 2nd-3rd pull, but it's a heavy pull. I also wish that the impeller was activated by a grip bar (similar to a self propelled mower). The constantly having to shut it down/restart it to change bags is a hassle (especially when a bag fills up every couple minutes)... see above comment about starting. It's also VERY loud, wear ear protection.

Run the machine over recently fallen Oak leaves with some dry Magnolia leaves mixed in. That would be my situation. This looks like a great product and the chipper makes it a multi-use tool that won't just sit for 90% of the time.

The other thing, by the time my leaves are falling I've been cutting the grass short. That grass still looked long on the first lawn and the machine still did well; I'd certainly consider it. You could probably modify the front to be more of an open mouth, but understandably not safe.

Is it worth getting over a good lawnmower with a bagging attachment? That is a pretty big chunk of coin and the only thing the mower doesn't do is mulch the branches. With a good high lift blade a mower will suck better and do double duty and cut as well

I'm seriously considering buying this unit for next fall. I've been checking out all the reviews on the different leaf vacuums and this is the first video on this make and model that I could find. I have 4 huge maple trees and it's getting to be too much for me to do as I'm getting older. I checked out having a lawn service to do a fall clean up but their prices have tripled since COVID and caused our difficult economic times as a result. Thanks for the great review. I just ordered one while they were on sale and had free shipping. In my area, you have to place leaves on your grass at the curb (and kill it, as it sits for 4+ weeks) or bag them for recycle pickup with weekly trash. This is the only machine I know of that has direct to paper bag capabilities. All the others require you to transfer from the machine bag to a paper compostable bag for pickup which is a royal PITA. No better than just using your mower and its bag. I see many like it but it has charging battery issues (I'll possibly have to modify/upgrade to a bigger capacity battery and use an external trickle charger). I'm also making a simple tamping stick to carry with it... pack down the bag and clear the chute. It should come with one standard IMHO.

I’ve been using a friend’s discontinued Troy-bilt vac. Shredding is an impressive 12:1. Even with a dust-reducing collection bag, it’s a dusty chore. Leaf vacs travel very slowly-much slower than a self-propelled mower. They are also louder than a mower. Ultimately vacuuming is more time consuming than blowing the leafs (nearly six times slower). Despite its cons, it’s excellent for collecting leaves from mulched beds if the accessory hose is at least ten feet long.

For my use case I use my backpack leaf blower to blow all leaves on my blacktop driveay and then just do a few passes with the machine. Woeks great. Learned to keep the leaves in a thin layer, originally blew into a narrow tall row, and I increases the height setting and found I was still going over it multiple times, so now keep it kinda spread out some on my driveay or sidewalks and no problem. Plus easy to push. Also just came back here to find out what bag you use when I want to dump in compost vs paper bag for takeaway by town.

Good, but not perfect This is, overall, a good help with gathering leaves. Mine was shipped across country to my location. It was very well packaged on a pallet and boxed well. Only a little assembly was needed, which was easy to complete. In the first 20 minutes of use, I discovered two bolts that were not adequately tightened in factory assembly. One caused damage to the drivetrain pulley, which DR support promptly addressed by sending me a new pulley. I had a lot of trouble starting mine sometimes, which drained the battery down, which necessitated recharging the battery. I eventually determined that the cut-off switch built into the lid shoot was most of my problem - getting stuck in the closed (ground) position. I have now bypassed that switch and it starts regularly fairly easily. Here are my Pros and Cons of this machine. Pros: - It does save you from having to rake and bend over a lot gathering and bagging leaves. - The power drive is a must have item - the machine is heavy. - The twig grinder works very well and is helpful. - DR phone and email customer support is good, should you have a problem. Cons: - It is a noisy machine - wear ear protection. - The 8:1 reduction claimed in leaf volume is way overstated. It varies a lot depending on how dry the leaves are and how large the leaves themselves are to start with. - You have to turn the machine off a lot to change the bags, and to compact the leaf mulch in the bag with your arm when the bag is initially “full”, then restart and do some more to fully “fill” the bag. - The plastic wheels, which everyone comments about, really could be better. They are so narrow and the machine so heavy, that you will be making ruts in your lawn if the ground is wet at all, which it can be in Fall. And the metal brackets that hold the adjustable height front wheels in place are not near strong enough to hold the weight and handle the stress of turns, causing them to bend out of shape easily, making the height adjustment pop out to a different height. Conclusion: The machine is a help with fall leaf collection, but it isn’t perfect and it is still a fair amount of work. Don’t let the leaves get too deep before using the machine - it will only clog in the shoot and take you forever to get the job done. Vacuum up leaves daily if they are accumulating quickly.

The problem with all DR products is they only offer cloned engines from companies that stole designs and invested nothing in R&D. Instead of offering engines from Briggs & Stratton, Honda, Kawasaki, etc. For that reason I purchased a Cyclone Rake with a B&S Vanguard engine.

I own one and the electric start doesn’t work well and the pull start is almost impossible to start. Ok machine, but not worth the money if you live on acreage with lots of mature trees.

Wow, for me I can say not worth it. Not enough leaves, I just use the lawn mower and bag it up. I have the Oregon blade on it that sucks things up,. and it works I ruined a rubber mat. I normally started it over this mat and no issue, then I changed the blade and had to pick pieces of the mat out of my mower.

You do not even need to bag it, just mulch it and leave it.

Non-paid reviewer here. Some things to note. These are heavy. I have the self-propelled version which has enough power to climb my steep backyard. It's going down that's the problem; like holding on to a runaway horse. The practical effect even for people with level yards is changing direction; that requires your muscle to lift it off its front wheels and pivot. Not horrible, but not for everyone, either. Knowing that the engine won't start/will stop when the lid is not clamped down tightly over the bag, and knowing that it's hard to tell that the lid is not fully locked down, will save you from trying to figure out why the vacuum won't start. If you run into fence posts enough times, you can change that wheel's alignment, making it like piloting a screwed up shopping cart. Yes, the "collapsible 30-gallon canvas garden waste bag" the guy links to seems like it was made for the leaf vacuum. Paper bags get ripped up if reused. You might tie the bag to vacuum to keep it in place. Part of my leaf-control arsenal, I still bag piles of leaves with leaf scoops.

I feel like if they allowed you to angle the front part of the vacuum outwards it would catch all the leaves instead of pushing a pile

interesting idea. that would work if it was more like a funnel. the issue is not losing the suction. I like it.

Cool machine. Not worth the price though. A $200 lawn mower does the exact same thing.
