I never used to fertilize until last year. Man what a difference it makes. Now I fertilize all the time. The plants look so healthy and bloom bigger and a ton more. I also use a ton of compost on my gardens every spring and put it in the holes of new plants

I also had a difficult time remembering the meaning of the NPK numbers until I heard Joe Lampl’ of Growing a Greener World mention this shorthand way to remember the meaning of the NPK numbers. NPK = “Up, Down, All around”. “Up” (Nitrogen) strong, lush foliar growth on planets above roots, “Down” (Phosphorous) strong, healthy roots below ground level and “All around” (Potassium) All around good plant health including roots, plant resilience and overall good health.

Robbie honey, I hate to dispute your claim about corn BUT corn IS a heavy feeder, but you do you. I do remember this from being a farmers wife BUT I googled it just to double check my memory cuz I am an old fart and what I refer to as my file cabinet ( brain ) sometimes kicks things out when it get too full. 😂💐💚🙃

Fertilizer can be such a touchy subject and everyone has their favorites. I'm definitely in the "yes use fertilizer" camp. FYI E.B. Stone has an All Purpose fert that is different than Sure Start. SS is 4-6-2 and the AP is 5-5-5. But the overall ingredients are the same and they are the same price. Both already incude Mycorrhizal Fungi. I use the AP twice a year on everything spring and fall.

I consider myself a new gardener, I have been watching many garden shows on KZbin, especially for roses. Here is what I have learned from some professional gardeners, miracle-Gro all purpose water Soluble is the best, you can get big box from Costco, half teaspoon per gallon water, twice a week for pots and plants in ground, it will never burn the roots and have enough nutrients for them, my roses have bloomed at least 6 times last year, this method really works for me, my garden is very beautiful, Robbie, if you come to San Jose area, I really like to show you my garden 😊

My grandmother liquified chicken manure. Would let it sit for a few hours. Just like making sun tea. Do you ever use your chicken manure for anything? I use to use my horse manure when it turned into compost on my grass. I always had a beautiful lawn. I know homesteaders turn all their animal manure into a beautiful compost. Great for gardens.

I THINK organic fertilizers help build your soil improving it over the years and synthetic fertilizers just feed the plants. And I guess I’m just talking about in ground planting, I believe organic fertilizers attract earthworms and other beneficial organisms improving the conditions of your soil over time. So I BELIEVE you are absolutely correct annuals NEED the immediate food source of synthetics in order to do their job of continually flowering while perennials and trees and shrubs benefit from a slower feeding building the soil around them to ensure proper or steady continuous growth. 💐💚🙃

This is soooo interesting Robbie! I've wondered for years whether I'm fertilizing properly. Question: The white petunias that weren't fertilized. When you started to give them fertilizer I was surprised that you poured it all over the blooms and leaves....does this help in some way? I've always made it a point to put the fertilizer right at the roots on the ground around the plant and I"m now wondering if I don't have a clue how to properly fertilize. Nobody ever showed me, I just assumed it goes on the earth, but maybe I'm clueless. I hope I can find Fox Farm here in Canada.

Thanks for the informative video. I just ordered Fox Farm using your link . I prefer to use organic fertilizer but have also used synthetic. I have a small vegetable garden and my tomatoes are doing fabulous. I have some Fox Farm soil ( I think it’s the Ocean Forest one) and I like it so I figured I would try their fertilizer since you also recommend it . The soil I have in my vegetable garden is from Home Depot and it’s organic and came in a pink bag and my vegetables are growing well in it ( lol I can’t remember the name of the soil) . On my roses I use the fertilizer from Heirloom Roses and it does smell stinky. My roses seem to like it . All my roses are young so I’m using it for the first year then I’ll switch to another fertilizer. My Margaret Merrill is looking particularly well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge ❤

Good morning Robbie and Brent! This was a great video! Love that you showed comparisons. I do use fertilizer, I have Dr. Earths Organic slow release, ( or you can mix with water) it also has many micronutrients in it. And it has some for roses, for tropicals (which I have many of) and all purpose. I also use some Miracle-Gro starter and one for succulents, and one for my orchids. I do have PW water soluble which I got for my petunias this last year. But, I haven't used it for anything else. (I forget about it lol) I would use for my potted plants but, for anything "in ground " I want Organic so as not to kill off any of the "goodies" in my soil. My Gardenia (potted) leaves are pale, so I just purchased some Liquid Chelated Iron that I will use on it, and I will use on some of my other acid lovers as well.

@bettyboop15245 ай бұрын
I had a lime tree and grapefruit tree. They were on my deck. I used the citrus tone on both, the next morning I found out the raccoons loved the stuff too. Both plants were pulled out of the containers and tossed to the side while the critters dug through the soil. I replanted them again, and the same thing happened. The critters won.
@wootertooter455 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh !!! I know how heartbreaking that must be . Everyone always mentions how much dogs really like the Espomatones who would think raccoons would too??
@Mya-Pearson5 ай бұрын
Maybe put chicken wire or some kind of mesh in your pots after applying fertilizer. Kind of like what people do with tulip bulbs to deter squirrels from digging them up. At least until the fertilizer has broken down some.
@rhelton77205 ай бұрын
The raccoons here LOVE Espoma fertilizers. I did use Plant Tone and/or the Starter BioTone and the raccoons would dig my plants up to get to the fertilizer. So, had to switch out. I don't know what is in there that the raccoons love so much and probably don't want to know!!
@Mya-Pearson5 ай бұрын
@@rhelton7720 What animals like so much about most Espoma fertilizers is Bone Meal which helps root growth and some other things. They could also be attracted to Fish Meal or Blood Meal. If you really want to avoid animals messing with newly fertilized plants, maybe choose a brand that doesn't use any of these things. The only downside is you will be forfeiting the possible benefits.
@rhelton77205 ай бұрын
@@Mya-Pearson Well, I did say I switched out. I’m trying to go more the Jim Putman “Hort Tube” school of fertilizing. Get the soil working for you and you won’t need to throw fertilizer in every hole you dig. I don’t container garden so this is working for me.

Really great video! I wait daily for your videos. Fertilizer types drive me nuts!! I just don’t get it 🤷🏻♀️, You gave clear advice but I am still confused!😂😂 For instance, you showed a bag of ‘Sure Start’ but you use it all year??… I thought fertilizer for starting a plant is just for that and that you move on to a different type of fertilizer after the plant is established? I will start fertilizing my hydrangeas with a rose food, heard that thru many sources so I get that but what type of fertilizer do you use on your shrubs, vines, and herbaceous perennials? Example-Honeysuckle Vine, Ninebark Shrubs, Astilbe, Ajuga, Daylily, Asiatic Lilies…etc… Sorry to be a pain in the …. but I’m so worried I’ll destroy something and I’m planting out so many large areas on my acreage 🤦♀️. Oh! I do compost plus add a ring of ‘Land and Sea’ compost around each plant in spring so my plants do pretty good but I know they could do so much better. Sorry for the length of this… Brenda🇨🇦
