I only like "drop-shut" action for knives with locks that allow the fingers to be completely out of the way during the whole unlocking process...compression lock, axis lock, etc.

Dropshutty is one of those things that, as I got into the knife world, I absorbed from the crowd as a desirable thing, but that I gradually unlearned as I tried knives with different action. I think the thing that's satisfying about it is that a lack of friction when fully tightened suggests good engineering. But what I learned that I don't like is that it removes an element of control in my handling of it as a tool. A little friction or hydraulic resistance helps me close it at the rate I want, which is itself satisfying, and also helps in frame/liner lock situations where I need to move my thumb out of there. I'm OK either way but I no longer see it as particularly desirable.

In a flipper, yes I really want it because to me it means good quality. And I think people should stop complaining about things they said for years they want. Since I remember many reviews and comments were about how smooth and drop shut the action is. Now that it is easier to find in less expesive knives people said they don't want it. The same with steel. People complain that 8cr is garbage and they want better. When they got better they complain they are bored with D2, heard someone said it rusts and is hard to sharpen and don't want it anymore. I bet if OTFs would become legal and cheap people would complain about them too. Must be the work of these annoying social media elitists. If an average guy can get something good for a fair price that they earlier spent a fortune on, they will say it is not cool anymore.
@jameswilson89073 жыл бұрын
People will always complain when something isn't the hot new thing or becomes cheaper over time. Like how you see reviewers scoffing when something comes with s35vn just because it isn't m390 which is artificially perceived as the best. I've even noticed a decent change in attitude towards Benchmade since the axis lock lost it's patent. People acted like they were the shit just a couple years ago and now they just complain about the price.
@Freakmaster4802 жыл бұрын
I think part of it is having time to use and absorb the feature itself and leave the honeymoon phase. When anything is new it's an entirely novel and interesting experience it's interesting and people haven't had enough time to really absorb the potential issues. When it comes to steel that's mostly idiots just blindly repeating whatever they've heard or people at the higher end who have lost perspective.

The other day I went to a store to handle some ZT knives, to get a feeling of which model is more drop-shutty. Then I realized something really interesting, the noise, the "ting", when the knife closes is different on full ti ones and cf ones. My dad was the first person to make me realize that this was even a question when I began collecting knives about a year ago. I got into the hobby and heard so many people talking about drop-shut actions that I just assumed it was an inherently good quality. Then, one day, my dad said something along the lines of "Looks like a trip to the emergency room waiting to happen." - and after thinking about it, I couldn't argue with him. Outside of personal taste, or MAYBE "functionality" if you're using your knife as a fidget toy, there's really nothing inherently good or bad about the close-portion of the action. Maybe the open is objective, but the close is basically entirely subjective. I just came across this with my new Civivi Dogma in brass. The action is as you described as one of your knives in this video - "glassy". Smoothest action of all of my knives thus far, amazingly (at almost a third of the price as some of the others!). But due to lockbar tension, absolutely does not come close to dropping shut. Good video. Good discussion.

I agree with many of the commentors here. I like on a drop shut action on a knife like an AXIS/Compression/button/etc lock (where my fingers are away from the blade), but I don't like it on a frame/liner lock (unless it has a very large flipper tab). This is especially true for me as I'm left handed, so there is much more finger in the way when I disengage the lock. If the blade doesn't have a flipper tab to stop on my thumbnail, there's a decent chance a drop-shut blade will stop on my knuckle.

I like the action of my Spyderco Stretch 2. It is a backlock which opens with a smooth consistent roll out; I can flick it out as well, but rarely do. To close it, I just moved my thumb back and press, then give the knife a gentle flick which puts the unsharpened heel of the blade against my index finger. I always know where the blade is, I don't have to even see it, yet the blade moves very easily and smoothly. I especially like the satisfying click that I can see and feel when the blade locks in place, and when it closes.

Nice video Nick. I think this is a good opportunity to talk about the different kinds of smoothness we might desire in a folding knife. Quality of smoothness and level of friction are too different things. CRK knives have that classic glassy "hydraulic" smoothness but there is still a good amount of friction. Cheaper knives on bearings might have very little friction, but the quality of that smoothness might not be very good because of lesser tolerances. Grimsmo's bearing actions would be an example of very high smoothness and very low friction. Personally I want a knife to be as smooth as possible while still maintaining a bit of friction, for the reasons you describe here. I don't want a knife closing itself (depending on the locking mechanism of course), I prefer to control the blade through its entire range of motion.

AKA Guillotine Action. The guillotine action works both ways. Had a Norseman and also A Gen 6 Hinderer (both with fall shut actions) overcome the detent and fully open in my pocket. Question then becomes do you want to play with and fondle your knife or use it as a tool. If you use the knife and carry it, then you probably don't want a guillotine action. Drop shut actions are not safe, especially on a flipper with tip-up configuration. Drop shut is fine for a toy. It's dangerous is you use your knife as a tool.

@Tom Smith he is making a point that when it comes to compression/ axis locks, the mechanical "feat" is not impressive, because those locking mechanisms by design simply do not come in contact with the blade when unlocked. There is nothing impressive about a drop shut knife when there's no friction... it's no more impressive than holding a knife in the air and letting it fall to the ground due to gravity. It's much harder to create a drop shut action on a knife where parts actually make contact with the tang of the blade while it closes.

I think the appeal of drop-shut was in the race to the bottom of smooth closing. I kinda consider the AD10 drop shut. Though i have to have my index finger in the way while i press the lock, it swings shut so easily until the choil hits my (very carefully positioned) fingernail. Even under lock tension, it swings under the huge weight of the blade until the lock bar slams it shut. It did bite me pretty good when I got it, lol, but it is surprisingly fun to open and close. My manual Gerber 06 is SUPER stiff to open and close. I thought the button lock would let it swing free, but not at all. I assume the auto has just an insanely strong spring.

There's nothing wrong with having personal preferences regarding a knife's characteristics. That being said, the characteristic as to whether or not a knife "drops shut" is really not a characteristic that is a critical one with respect to a knife's true purpose and function. Liking and preferring knives that have this particular characteristic, again is completely fine. I won't say anyone is wrong for having this preference. But the problem that arises, is that the more it is discussed as a characteristic, especially in reviews, the more it starts to (mis)lead people, especially perhaps those new to the hobby, into erroneously believing that it is a more critical characteristic than it really is. If a person is buying, collecting, and carrying knives more as fidget devices, then perhaps this is important to that person. But if a person is buying, collecting, and carrying knives as cutting, slicing, and carving tools, then let's be completely honest, this is not a characteristic that is critical with respect to cutting, slicing, and carving. I feel like Nick is and has always been very clear on this point, but across the hobby as a whole, that's not necessarily the case.

I don’t know why that’s important, since it flies out perfectly. I supposed a smooth drop is indicative of good fit and finish, but it doesn’t serve any real useful purpose. As long as it deploys quick, and snappy, and I can close it with one hand, I’m happy.

I don't have anything that is truly "drop shut" and unless it was like a Grimsmo or a Shirogorov, I don't think I'd want one. My two knives with the action I like the best right now are my ZT0450 and my Ontario Rat 1. I like that they are not truly drop shut but close to it.

i love drop shut, but this is actually the reason i will only buy a frame or liner lock - drop shut or no - that has a significantly protruding flipper tab to prevent it from ever closing on my fingers. in general i wish we would move on from the standard of having to put your fingers in the path of the blade to close the knife

I agee that the frame lock adds inherent danger, but also adds simplicity and reduces fragile parts. That is why the Sebenza is such an icon: easy to disassemble and clean, smooth but not drop shut, durable.

Looks cool but at the end of the day makes no sense to me. Only because I’m old school trained on knife safety.

Unfortunately in the quest for "drop shuttiness" most makers cheat with thick blade stock. Keep your drop shutty prybars, I'll take a knife that cuts well.

I love that the bugout is one of the more affordable drop-shutty knives while maintaining quite a thin blade.

I learned about drop shut action from watching your channel like the Graham razel and grimsmo norsman videos so i got a norsman and loved the action but it might just be to drop shut a few months ago i got a shirogorov 95t and that has a drop shut action but its a more controlled drop shut which i enjoy a little more and haven't cut my finger like i have on the norsman great video i watched it twice lol

The grimsmo can be "a bit much" because not only is it drop-shut, but it's hot a FAT hunk of blade helping to shut the knife even more.

I think we talk way to little about the tactile joy of knives whether it's on the Sebenza end of the scale or on the Grimsmo end. We talk about fall-shuttitude or walk-and-talk but we don't call it what it is: tactile joy.

My knife (aluminum version Iona) doesn't drop shut, but it will close up if you just shake it lightly. Almost like a mechanical feel when it closes normally. Smooth but not butter... I actually kinda prefer that.

At 2:00 the 3rd knife in from the top right I can't for the life of me understand what brand and model you said. North Ops Ahhaa?

I love a strong detent so the only one option i have its the lock back.

I have a sprint run PM2 that is the very definition of a finger guillotine. Falls shut quite well. I'm just extra careful with it, is all.

I could go either way honestly although I appreciate drop shutting for my work knives where I'm often cutting at strange angles or I have to be quick while I'm working

I do not care if my knife drops shut lol 😂

I’m surprised you didn’t mention any detent locks for the dropshut slipjoints
@NickShabazz4 жыл бұрын
Ah, true. They're just not quite the same as 'slipjoint'. But the EWC is a nice example.
@censusgary4 жыл бұрын
For my purposes, as long as a knife can be closed with one hand, it doesn’t need to drop shut. Of course, as Nick says, it’s more of an aesthetic question than a functional one.

Well , after all , drop shutting is a production bug or not ?

I like a little shake to close, that way I'm kinda in control.

Yes, smooth and fall ( vs drop shut) shut is a must.

Unless it's a type of axis or button lock its not really a big deal for me.

Yep, I like the drop shutty action too. Unfortunately not that many have a truly drop shut ability.

I imagine this video will help clear up some misconceptions so that it's hopefully an open and drop-shut case. Eh? Eh? hehe
