The very best knife is my knife, because it's my knife, and that means I have to justify its cost by telling myself I have the best knife. Otherwise I may want another knife, and the knives I usually want are expensive. So yeah, all of your knives are bad and mines the best. Even though many of your knives are clearly superior to mine. I have to tell myself this, to keep from buying more knives... Lol.

@@MrAlwaysRight Well that's an interesting statement really, "price shouldn't matter". Price isn't really a factor in what draws me to a knife, its just a thing that you have to deal with depending on what you're wanting. In general, what I want, is usually not cheap. That's not to say I don't have and enjoy cheaper knives. I do, but most of the time, the knives that catch my eye are just more expensive, and I can't be going after them simply because I want em, lol. I figure ya gotta be happy with what ya got. For me, the best EDC knife is my Victorinox Rambler. It's basically a Classic with the bottle opener from the Rally added to it. It's the knife that out of all the knives I own gets used more than any other. There is always a Rambler in my EDC makeup bag/survival kit. Its small size means it never scares anyone when I take it out to open a package or envelope, the scissors are the best nail trimmers I've ever owned, and the bottle opener, screwdrivers, tweezer, and toothpick are always with me. The only things that I think could be better are the nail file (usable, but not great) and (OK for splinters, but not for hair). But, in the category of knife featured here, I carry a vintage Gerber Harsey AirFrame First Production Run (fine edge), US made, 154CM steel, titanium scales, 3 7/8" blade.
@xenonram4 жыл бұрын
I don't get the whole "doesn't scare anyone." I think the problem is more with knife owners restraining themselves from using their knives because someone may "get scared." If more people are using their knives, it would become normalized and it would be much less of an issue. I personally don't care if "someone gets scared." That's their own fault and it shouldn't hinder yours or my freedom to use a knife.

I think I'd add the Spyderco manix 2. Either the normal or the light weight. Big big fan of the Kershaw Skyline for overall best edc knife. I own much more expensive knives that I could say are better than the skyline. But if I had to pick one knife for everyone, it would be the skyline. The price is doable for most people, lightweight, comfortable, great blade, easy to sharpen. You can thrash it around and really use it without caring about it. Only drawback is the pocket clip, but they make tons of aftermarket pocket clips, backspacers, and handles to choose from. You can customize it any way you want. Action is smooth from the 1st day I got it years ago. Take my advice if you are looking to get into pocket knives, you want one good knife that you will never have to replace, get the kershaw skyline. You will not be disappointed. You will not regret it

Werner Voss I agree with you. I also own a rat 1. The action stands out for me. For the money you get an action that some 100$ knives don’t have. Blade it also easy to sharpen and razer sharp. the only drawback for me is the weight. For me personally, it’s a bit on the heavy side. And for that, it doesn’t get much pocket time, I always pick a lighter weight spyderco, or my skyline over it. By the way, I hate kershaw speedsafe. Mostly why I’m such a fan of the skyline. I’ve taken the speedsafe out of my cryo, but it doesn’t make it as good as other unassisted knives

100% this. As someone who wears heavy gloves for work, I carry a dual action otf because I can open and close it just as easy with gloves on as I can with them off. I could never find a flipper that worked for me at work. I own the Rat 1 & 2, a few small to medium Cold Steels, and have a dozen or so budget brands, i.e. Ganzo, QSP, etc.. I've yet to order a Benchmade or Spyderco and if I do get one of these brands I feel like I'll only be doing it because of the Brand. My question in all of this, is how many feel the same way, or have ordered one simply because of the name? Would they truly be worth the money to someone of my knife buying experience?
@sqeeye31023 жыл бұрын
While I agree that several of the big companies are overpriced, there is still a lot of value in finding a design that feels perfect for you. But in a lot of cases the BM Butterfly is gonna add 50-70 dollars and maybe a little less for the Spydie Bug. I bought my BM 940-2 not because of BM but because it was so highly regarded for a knife I figured I would love. A "buy once cry once" kind of thing. That is usually not a problem but it didn't work out this time since BM has garbage QC but is amazing for just enough people to retain the allure. I replaced it with a Hogue Deka whose name had no value to me at all but is legitimately fantastic with better steel, QC/fit and finnish, and is 50 dollars cheaper than the comparable 940-2. I find that buying American holds more value to me than the American company itself but nationality is not a hard rule for me. In doing so I accept that I will have to pay more for the same quality but at least that really is going to something that isn't just a brand logo. But some people just have different standards for different things. I feel like telling you that my Hogue Deka at 140 dollars was a great buy will likely fall on deaf ears in the same way that someone might try to convince me that 700 for a certain Hinderer makes sense. In my defense, if I knew of a cheaper knife in 20CV/M390/204P (basically identica), with G10 handles, and somewhere between 3-3.5" blade I would absolutely buy it. The Kershaw Dividend is one such knife but I can't find the 20CV version in stock. It would be for my collection, though, and probably wouldn't replace my Deka for EDC. Oh and I did buy the Ganzo 940 copy just to check it out, definitely not even close. Just way bigger and heavier but the price is hard to ignore. For the price I would have bought one even if I loved my 940-2. The Ganzo version is different enough that I don't have a problem with them existing but there are extremely close fakes of the BM 940 out there that can be had for like 15-20 dollars. I think those are immoral but if I am being honest, you will probably never justify the price of a real one so a fake will probably do it for you. The fakes make it extremely difficult to even buy real ones anyway, just check out some of the recently made "how to spot a fake" videos and you will see that you basically need to already own one. Maybe that says something by itself.

@@sqeeye3102 Very cool read, I'm with you on the fakes, they're just getting better at faking it I guess:) I do and have noticed the bigger brand companies do offer better quality steel no doubt, and I'll definitely pull the trigger on one before it's over. Currently, I've been telling myself not to go over $100 on one particular knife, not including taxes. I don't know, it's mostly just my budget but if that changes to where money isn't a factor I could see myself getting a Chris Reeves or Hinderer type brand like you mentioned. So far from my limited knife collection the OKC Rat 1 feels the best and I use them more than any others. By the way, I dropped one of my Ganzo's on my bedroom carpet and chipped off part of the point on the blade:) HA! Maybe that could happen with any knife, but that would suck on some BM or Spydie....

@@geico1975 @geico1975 I'm glad you got something out of my post. Some things to add. One funny point I noticed about the fake; the kerning (the spacing of a a font's lettering, like the "r" and "n" in "kerning" to look like an "m" for example) was better on the fake's model number. The fake looked like "940" but the real one looks like "9 40". $100 will get you quite a bit of knife to be honest, and I believe there are a bunch of Spyderco's in there. I just wouldn't really know because it's outside of what I'm usually looking for and I also hate the spydiehole + leaf blade look. Unfortunately that's most Spyderco's, and basically all in that range. If you ever decide to go the Hinderer route then look at Zero Tolerance aka ZT (the high end Kershaw, literally the same parent company) because he collaborated with them on knives like the 0562CF which are literally just as good for *hundreds* less. Just search for "ZT Hinderer" to see what options you like. Can't help you save any money on a Chris Reeves though, but it's on my "eventually" list, maybe try the secondary market if you go for it? Also, I absolutely love my Rat 2 and didn't have anything against my Rat 1 other than size/weight so I gave it another home. Both came shaving sharp and had blue Loctite on every single screw which was the opposite experience from my BM 940-2. The pivot screw on the BM constantly backed out even with loctite most of the time which is a problem I have literally never had before with any knife. Rat 1/2 are my easiest go-to recommendation when someone is on a budget but still wants something great, so I'm glad you found the same. I must admit, if the QC issues on my 940-2 were not present it would actually be deserving of its place in everyone's "Top 10" lists. I can't speak to any major manufacturer regarding blade damage from drops, it's just not something that ever happens to me. I drop them closed all the time though, which is why I won't own an aluminum handle version of anything. Hence why I constantly specified that I was talking about a 940-2 (G10) and not the 940 (green aluminum trash). I would highly recommend you take that into consideration for any knife you actually feel proud of, as seeing a nice big gouge in something that makes you happy really sucks the wind out of your sails. Aluminum is such a garbage handle material it will be scratched in a hermetically sealed room with no metal. Most of the time with G10 I can't even find where the scratches were but aluminum makes scratches almost glow. I also prefer finishes that help hide blade/clip scratches for the same reason, like stonewashing, but that's kind of inevitable. Lastly, don't just buy something because other people tell you it's great. Buy something you think will be great based on what other people like or dislike about it. If something is a lot of money to you and you aren't really "getting it" then go to a knife shop and handle one in person before you jump in. I am certain that the AD 20 / 20.5 shark lock knives are great knives for a lot of people but I will not be buying one because it just isn't for me even though they are beloved in the community. You're not really gonna get poor-shamed for not having the new 'Super Knife', you might just catch some indifference for carrying something common / inexpensive. Hopefully that helps tie everything together regarding your original question. Sorry for the shitload of paragraphs, I guess I had a lot to say.

I have the TRM Atom and it is phenomenal. Can do just about anything, including chef’s knife-type chopping/slicing like the Spidiechef. Easy to work on, multiple scales to swap if that is your wont.

Great to see the native 5 fluted cf here. My absolute favourite edc choice 😁 and one knife i have been EDCing for years. Gotta agree, probably one of the best things spyderco makes 👍

Funny knife, the fluted CF Native 5. Bought one - it's stunningly beautiful ... and returned it. Like Nick stated in his full review of the knife, I have other knives that cover the job and are a little more appealing in one way or another. Or so I thought. Like Nick stated here, even since I returned the fluted CF Native 5 I've been inclined to buy one again as my one EDC. (But I haven't done it yet.)

Under 300? You are missing a couple gems there Giantmouse ACE Biblio (any version) and the ZT 0562ti I'd argue they can compete with anything on the table for the crown. Also, please do a review of the GM ACE Grand, I'd love to hear your opinion on that beast. As always, great video Nick! Keep on rocking sir

While I recognize the bugout and griptilian are more iconic, as a guy with chunky, sweaty hands, the mini freek is my favourite benchmade
@etherealicer3 жыл бұрын
That is what different models are for... The biggest "advantage" of being a bugout fan-boy is that you have access to a huge range of after-market stuff and can get it in any color (and if you can't you can get neutral scales and color them yourself). If you don't care for that, then it really doesn't matter.

Hi Nick have you done the American lawman review, had a quick search but couldn't see one, I know the name is corny as hell and the coldsteel marketing leaves lot to be desired but as you mentioned it's a super knife and carries so much smaller in the pocket than it is, it's definitely deserves a visit/revisit. It was my first coldsteel and a big knife for me but damn it's good.

I've been carrying my Spyderco Military Model daily since 2008. It has never failed me. The partial serrations zip through plastic industrial banding. Saved my life through two defensive encounters. And it still looks great after all these years. I've had to replace the pocket clip once, but that's a small price to pay. It will easily last another 14 years.

Of those spoken of I don't have a Dragonfly, Delica, Native 5, Para 3, Neutron, Atom and EWC. I have an Xlc instead of EWC. I want an Atom but I haven't been savvy enough to get one.

I’d probably go with the Sharp By Design Evo Typhoon if I had to stick with a $300 limit. But those aren’t usually available and are also more than $300 if you’re not preordering through Brian.

Far M I think that people will need to buy a few before they find one that they will commit to carrying every day. I think I would recommend someone brand new wait for the budget version to play around and then find one they like to upgrade to a higher end version of it.

I work in a hospital, so being unobtrusive, "lunchroom friendly" and "less murdery" are important. Plus, I wear scrubs, which are lightweight cloth... weight is a big consideration so it doesn't look like I'm carrying several rolls of quarters in my pocket. I often put a Cold Steel Recon 1 in my shirt pocket. A Gerber Dime mini multitool is a nice one, too. I also have a couple of Kershaw Oso Sweet knives that can go in a waistband or hip pocket without being obtrusive.

One that is lightweight and small enought that is very easy to carry so as to have it available always. I go for the Quiet Carry IQ knife as same lives in one of the compartments of my Wazoo Survival cache belt. It has worked for me for the last 3 years as it meets my daily requirements for a knife in the city, does not scare people or screams atention as a knife. In fact when closed, it looks like anything but a knife.

The Sham and the Native are my all time favorites right now. Hoping for the rumored Caly 3.5 in FRN eventually. The R2D2 really didn't do it for me, I much prefer the Kizer Begleiter. I'm surprised the North Arm Skaha II didn't make it on there (and you would've had a 2nd flipper!)

My everyday carry depends on my tasks for the day, the clothes I’m wearing, the people I’m around. If I need a tank to multitask and put hard work on, I’ll go with one of the paramilitaries. Dressed up, I’ve really enjoyed my mini Osborne. If I’m with friends and want to flex a little, I’ll rock my Chaves.
