We tell our kids - "Eat badam and you will become more smart, drink milk to become stronger, eat fruits you will run faster etc." Are these conversations wrong? or right to convince kids to eat? Let's find out.
1. Children only know the language of happiness and fun. Not health. We need to have more fun meal time conversations, link happiness to food not health These conversations about convincing them to "eat X because it's healthy", does not words because they dont understand what "healthy means".
2. Children feel abundant and complete. They dont feel a tiny bit of negativity about themselves at all. They just dont understand what it means to become "More stronger". "More Intelligent". They think they are super heroes already and we are actually bringing down their confidence by saying all these traits about food in a subtle way.
So how do we convince them to eat:
1. Firstly we need to make sure that we make meal times fun. Eating together, being a role model yourself and showing them how you enjoy food of different colours, different tastes and make them excited to try.
2. Allow them to be intrigued by your plate of food. You can feed them a bite, or ask them to take a bite from your plate to try.
3. Talk about how you made food, the ingredients, textures, count them, some real fun stories at the dining table.
4. We need all our learnings from a birthday party, because we dont tell our kids to eat, but they finish up their entire plate without you having to feed them or convince them to eat. Why, because, they love having fun, eating together with kids, playing at birthday parties :-)
5. Make mealtimes completely stress free. No obsessing about food, not pushing them to finish food, no forcing food they just dont want to eat. They should not think "Food time means, mama/papa/nanny's scolding time". Instead they should feel happy emotions to eat well.
