The more water you pump out, will cause more water to come in. You should try to insulate the walls from outside, do french drains as others mentioned it earlier, and install gutter on the roof. There are products to insulate from inside too.

Great advice. I have an old house, and was battling ground water flooding for years. Dug a hole for the sump pump, had the French drains, had new eave troughs installed, and still flooding, due to so much rain, and the permafrost in the winter. Finally fixed it by making a mini moat trench around the outside of my place, and directing the water away towards my gardens. You could probably shorten the float on the sump pump with a zip tie too.
@stevejohnstonbaugh91714 күн бұрын
@@kimmycanuk2530 That's not a sump pump. What you see is a variety of random parts plugged together to imitate a sump pump. Dangerous and ineffective. You are right. The only real solution is to direct the water away from the foundation with gravity.

No food for frog will make life hard. Wise to have storage off the floor. You’ve worked so very hard to change this from a dirt and garbage filled pit to a useful area. It looks like figuring out drainage away from the house will be important to tackle in the next few years to avoid mold. Wishing you the best

Tips on how you can get rid of the water from getting into your basement. As I see in the video, your basement is in the corner with two outer walls. So my tip is to start digging out the side of the outer wall down to the bottom plate and then you take about 15 cm below the bottom plate. Once you have the entire outer wall free, you take the cold slab and the ground mat that is made of asphalt so you get the seal against the basement.

Why don't you take the correct path and buy a real sump pump? Sump pumps are built specifically to do this work. It is fully submerged and you have no worries about electrocution. WHat you have created is a Frankenstein pump setup that will never be 100% reliable. You don't want Dessy to walk into the water one day and die by electrocution. Just buy a proper submersible sump pump. If your pit is not deep enough, dig it out. It is too shallow as it is.

I have a rainwater collection system that uses a sump pump to collect all the rain that lands on my roof. The sump tank that holds the pump is about 3 feet deep (a meter). Your pump needs to be sitting in dry after it has pumped out all that it can. It shouldn't always be in the water, or it will go bad (probably corrode out). My first pump went bad after a few years, but the current one seems to be going strong 3 years later.
@DoBeDiff3 күн бұрын
Yeah the sump pump we have needs to be submerged around a meter deep for the float to turn on. I been researching on floats that are more precise and work with smaller amount of water. The way I have the pump it never touches the water, the rubber hose and filter only sits in the water!

From my years of experience (many more than yours 😊), I can tell you it’s almost next to impossible to keep a dry basement unless you start with a new build and waterproof the walls from the outside, plus drainage from the outside, plus a sump pump inside for insurance.

I think it's just a problem that's going to have to wait until summer to address. The French drains are a smart idea. But you have to remember that all houses settle over time causing the foundation to sink lower than the way it was when it was new. I think the best solution is the drainage issues outside around the foundation but, you can't do that in the middle of winter. As long as everything is elevated above the floor it should be fine until you have the opportunity to fix it. But as others have said, basements are notoriously hard to keep dry. Once summer hits and you fix the drainage problem, you might seal the walls and floor with special sealing products made for basements. But doesn't your food storage look marvelous? There is nothing quite as satisfying as standing and looking at the results of all your hard work. Nice job.

We will install drainage around the house and the yard but I doubt that it will solve this problem since this is more of ground water level being high. Maybe if you tie a string to a brick, put the brick in the sump, tie string to cord so the float is below the basement floor. This should turn on the pump before the water gets to basement floor level.
