So true. A trainer at the dog obedience school I frequent calls it ‘the utter conviction your dog is going to do what you want him to’ he often adds a dog (especially a Dobermann or another strong breed) will tend to do what you expect. If you expect him/her to obey, he/she most probably will. If you expect him/her not to, he/she most probably won’t. One of the most valuable lessons a dog/Dobermann owner needs to learn is not to care a hoot about failing and appearing ‘less’ or even utterly ridiculous compared to others in the class. Once you stop caring about the failures and start caring about the successes, your attitude changes and your dog feels you won’t give up. You’re calmer, more stable and automatically more consistent and structured. Your focus is better. Your dog feeds on your emotions and body language. when things are right in your head, they’ll be right during training. I’ve stayed home from training sessions for that simple reason. There was absolutely no reason to go after a bad and traumatic disagreement with my then-SO if it had messed with my head so much I couldn’t let it go: it would only serve to ruin all the hard work from previous months. Going to training with a fever on the other hand always yielded surprisingly excellent results: either I must have been past caring, or my dog would be so focused on sick mommy she was extra-focused on me. Or both. LOL!

One trick I discovered to avoid loss of focus in dog obedience class during the time we had to wait for other owner-dog couples to do their individual exercises or whilst a trainer was explaining/demonstrating an exercise, was to reward my dog for calmly waiting. I slipped my pup a treat or I’d pet my dog unexpectedly. That would revert my dog.s attention to me. When it was time to work, I’d draw my dog.s attention, occasionally slip a treat, then go into the exercise and reward again after completion. It does mean you have to be capable of multi-tasking, ALWAYS having part of your focus on your dog as well. Then again, it.s just good training practice with any breed of dog IMHO. Perhaps it is because I grew up with Dobermanns and English Bull Terriers, and the breeds I’ve owned are Dobermann, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Chihuahua (and a few others). These three breeds are however known to dance circles around their owner if you don’t know how to have (and keep!) their attention.

Great advice as always. Another one I've learnt is that you have to keep the training ongoing, throughout their lives. I've said it before, but, give them an inch and they'll take a mile 🙄 Got to love them ! I smiled so much when Arlo jumped all over you when you collapsed on the street. I started home workouts a year ago and liv didn't know what I was doing and she did the same 😂

I have had different results with different doberman. My male, DeSoto, whom passed April 29, 2021, was not treat motivated. I barely tried to train him. He was very obedient. I could off leash walk him with zero issues. If there was another dog, squirrel, cat, or person, all I had to do is tell him no or stay or leave it. He always came to me right away when I called him. Any command, it took one time for him to obey. I could leave him in the yard and never felt paranoid about him trying to leave. When he was around 1 year, he got out of the back yard, but went straight to the front porch. Best dog I have ever had. My husbands Doberman, I did train with treats. With treats, he obeys with 1 time command. Without, it takes me saying the command 3 to 5 times. The 4th and 5th is being more assertive. If I tell him to get off of my bed, at the 3rd time, I smack his butt. Takes a 4th to 6th time of smacking his butt and saying down for him to finally obey. My currently 10 month old, Cavill, listens most of the time. He does go where ever food is. He loves food. Not picky at all. He learned all basic commands the first week I had him, by 9 weeks old. Plus he learned buttons between 8.5 weeks and 9.5 weeks old. He walks well on a leash. I had no success walking 4 dobermans before him without hard pulling.

Help. My adopted doberman from the Humane Shelter 3 months ago is estimated now to be 12 months old. She was so excellent at commands and excellent in the house and she was timid about sniffing or going close to bushes outside. She was an amazing, great dog. We practice sit, stay and come every day before her breakfast and dinner, plus learn to heel on a walk every morning. She was great at those things she already knew. She learns new commands in about 2 days. She's very intelligent. Now, three months later, after I've been consistent, she's stopped listening. Sometimes she wont sit. She loves to act distracted in our yard or house, so everything is more important than obeying. She's escalating. When we practice sit, stay and come in the yard, she'll run across the yard to me and sit when I say, come. Now, she will do this the first three times (from different places in the yard), maybe. But then she just ignores me, laughs and runs away to play. i stop the session after asking her several times and just go inside. The other commands we practice daily she is also starting to ignore. I started saying it 3 - then 5 - then 20 times, then louder. I feel challenged, and each time I repeat a command more, she seems to escalate at everything. Do I have a teenage doberman who is challenging me? I understood getting a leash to lead her if she doesn't come the first time, although she has learned to challenge me by running off very fast all around the yard, behind trees, places where I couldn't reach her. Then zooming by me. Around and around. But how can I get her to stay after the first command? I walk her back and insist she return where she broke her stay. It may sort of work. How do I get her to sit, if she's ignoring me? I press her bottom down, but lately she takes a firm stance and can't be pushed down to sit. I don't think I ever reward her bad behavior, except when I didn't know repeating the command was rewarding it. I am teaching her a new command each week. She has some of the toys you recommended, such as the cube with food inside, two nylon bones, the squeaky ball, a harder ball to throw. (But she won't run or fetch. She brings it back near me to tease me several times, but by the third throw, she has me go fetch it). I just bought her a kong. She has some jerky treats you recommended, and other treats too. Please give more suggestions or tell me what to do during this challenging phase where she refuses to obey more and more and is becoming more destructive to my property, such as tearing up the all-weather outdoor carpet glued to the back porch floor. She chewed up some drip irrigation tubing she discovered. She always leaves things she did that might be bad right in front of the door for me to see. If I miss something, she points it out to me with her nose. Is she bored outside, although I bring her in and out all day, and let her enjoy being outside in our interesting yard on the cooler summer mornings? Please help me with what was once a perfect dog, and is now a challenging one. Thanks for telling us about some of this in this video. I'd love your help.

We recently adopted a 3 year old intact doberman that hadn’t been properly trained growing up and it feels like a constant uphill battle, I’m small so when he pulls it’s hard for me to stand my ground and when I try to train him he can’t seem to focus on me no matter if I have treats or a favorite toy, even training him indoors leads to him getting distracted or just not wanting to listen, he also has poor house manners and always steals food from plates or counters. I feel stuck but can’t afford a trainer yet so these videos are real helpful and I’ll try these out with my dobie to see how it goes!
