First-time Doberman owners often find themselves struggling to raise their dogs, especially during those tough early puppy stages. Can a first-time dog owner really be successful raising a Doberman? In this video, you'll learn what the five most common issues are that I see while doing my training sessions with my clients as well as what I say to them to get them back on track. We'll talk about first-time dog owners raising a Doberman and how they can be successful by avoiding some of these common pitfalls. This video is my attempt at providing some of the best insight I can for some of the most common cases I see during my coaching sessions with new Doberman owners.

First time Doberman owners here! Our Atlas (red male) is just about 8 months old now. We've had our moments where we almost gave up but putting the work in and sticking to a plan has paid off. The advice and motivation from your videos has been so valuable for us. He's got such a strong personality and he loves uncondtionaly. I always heard Dobermans were an amazing breed but now I've seen what that means first hand. The biggest thing for us was making sure he has an outlet for all that energy. I've never seen a breed with such focus and trainability. His food drive is 10/10 and I'm convinced you can train these dogs to complete any task u can think of. My family and our dog thank you so much for making these videos!

Your videos are the most helpful! 1- they sold me on the breed and what I was looking for to add to my family and 2- in our first moment of weakness with our pup, it was your video on leadership that had turned it all around. I am a first time Dobie owner, and my doberman is blossoming, thanks to your videos. Now I'm waiting on your doberman with small children video, cuz that's an area that I would like to see get better with my family. Thank you for all you do!

Consistency is the key. I'm working with my first one, he's 5 month old, and 5 weeks ago he's been acting on nipping behavior. I took the steps from one of your videos, and I've started seen some progress. I see it now as a natural stage he has to go through, and I could only support him. Thanks for this, it was really insightful on how they naturally expect to be led and guided!

Hoping to be a first time dog and Dobermann owner next year. Another really useful video, thanks again. Am fine with the high energy needs, as I love exercising myself, and will socialise my puppy constantly, take it to training classes, IPO, agility, dancing with dogs and provide mental stimulation with puzzle toys and training commands. Am lucky enough to be home 24/7, so will have plenty of time for my Dobermann.

Lb med doberman). All rescues including doberman from Germany working dog with all his papers,lineage,etc. Literally picked the clearance items at petsmart for real bones,chicken strips,chew toys (he figured out how to pull out the stitching from those "unchewable toys" so we have to watch him with toys...we spent a total with a $50 bed of $180 first month and now for all our dogs it's $85 a month including supplements for our old pitt and our german pincher that has seizures fom inbreeding (she's solid black found at 15weeks old full of fleas,tapeworms, and walking pneumonia). I would recommend lots and i mean LOTS of organic real animal bones because our doberman (every dog we have ever had) when he at all his bones would then eat ENTIRE SHOES AND POOP OUT!! Lots of canned mixed with kibble turkey,salmon,or lamb to prevent fatty liver disease. Sweaters are a MUST because anything colder than 70degrees makes them shiver! Rope toys are freat but watch him because they will eat that too. They have all natural fur toys that hunting dogs can safely eat and break down. $8/toy.

I recommend getting a "show-line Doberman. Their exercise requirements are a bit lower and they seem to me that they settle down a bit around the house. Still, stays protective. Anyway, that is what I've experienced.

This is a breed that needs training…this is not an ankle biter that if they act up you can ignore (although those need training too).. so many get Dobermans because they “look cool” and know nothing about the breed, to the detriment of the animal…and to the detriment of responsible Doberman owners. I have an almost 3 year old intact male who has hit his “teenage-young adult”stage and still needs training as he hits each of his phases of growth. Like children they have different behaviors at different stages of life.

My first Doberman named DonDon was just biting up everything from cement bag to poised rats. I had to bring him several times to the vet for treatment. He was very active and could run freely up and down my garden. At the age of 11 month, he killed and bit up a poisonous tod at night. In the morning I found DonDon with a foaming mouth. The vet couldn't save his life, he was dieing there over night. My new Doberman Dandy behaved little better and hope there is no more tod in my yard again. Both Dobers are very loving dogs, interacting with children and visiting friends very friendly. Anyway they are good watchdogs, barking and defending my yard at night.

G’day from Melbourne, Australia mate! Great content as always. A point I’d like to make is that Doberman’s are a breed that are masters at training their owners and that they are also continuously trying to assess their position in the pack hierarchy. But yep, they definitely thrive on having rules in their life, it’s amazes me sometimes, once they “get” it, they almost train themselves, but give them an inch and they’ll take a mile! Archers six now and I’d love to get him a couple of playmates and contemplating importing from the US which is incredibly difficult due to quarantine regs here. Except for Hawaii and Guam. Oh and on the subject of quarantine, I’d just like to say my hometown now beats the world! 260 days of lockdown and counting. Barely been able to leave the house except to walk the hound and buy food. For me it’s been a nightmare seemingly without end, but for my Doberman it’s literally been a golden age lol. 24/7 contact with just me in a tiny 150 year old cottage. I suspect that he has now developed the ability to read my mind. Aaaaaand finally I’d just like to say I’m so glad that he’s been here with me this whole time, I honestly don’t know if I’d have made it through all this crap if it wasn’t for his company. Best dog ever. A one in a million…🥲

Great video! What are your thoughts on dogs with 2 masters? I have a female Doberman and I now have a job so I am gone a few hours in the evening. I do most of the training, but hubby takes her for walks when I am gone and does some training with her as well. We also share in feeding and potty trips outside. She seems bonded to us both. I know that it is unusual with a female. She is still a bit mouthy, but nothing hard or mean, I think it's mainly teething. Just a fun fact...she is also OBSESSED with cats! Her behavior towards them depends on their behavior towards her. She loves my cat, sometimes a bit too much! Now when hubby takes her for walks, there is a friendly little orange kitty that walks right up to them. My dog will lunge and the kitty lays down and rolls over, happy pawing the air. So my dog likes this cat. Now, if a cat growls, hisses or aggressively swipes, my dogs barks ferociously! Thanks for the videos! They are very helpful!
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 3 жыл бұрын
Your pup sounds very in-tune with the cat's emotions and reactions towards her! Dobermans can definitely have two masters - as long as the responsibility of training and exercising is shared, she will view you both as the alpha and respect each of you. Great to hear from you!

All want-to-be Doberman owners should make this a mandatory video. Outstanding advice! Funny story: when we went to pick out a puppy there was one that was always climbing a rope to the ceiling. As cute as it was, we knew that it was the dog that watched Netflix with the breeder that was the one for us!!! Full disclosure, Moses is by no means a couch potato. We exercise him vigorously which makes him a behavioral angle…most of the time. I do think of the rope-climbing Doberman and hope that he landed an athlete for his owner and hope he did not end up a statistic.

I've always found that boundries/kennel time makes a huge difference in how my 2 behave. I used to see it as a punishment, but now it is a tool, sometimes they can't chill, sometimes they are chilling, sometimes I just need some time wo them around, sometimes they just need some time apart, there are plenty of reasons, but your dog should be comfortable w being kenneled and it will take alot of stress out of your relationship esp helping w separation anxiety which believe me, your dobe will suffer from esp due to covid. These dogs love you and wanna be w you always, but sometimes for all parties involved a kennel is a great tool.

AND how this youtube page was NOT my "saving grace" in the "ordeal". This page just shows you the "POSITIVES" and not the STRUGGLES of what having a Dobie means. And so, based on my exp, I rec that you take your ownership/responsibility to your dog's actual "THRIVING", (and simultaneously helping YOU), to a "higher" level and; moreover, an example that shows you the "ugly/difficult" as well. I think that's a FAIR way to put it, to any new Dog owner, ESPECIALLY a WORKING dog like the DOBERMAN, so stop watching youtube videos on how to train just any dog, i.e. most popular breeds on youtube: small &/or slightly medium dogs. So, I just want to remind Doberman puppy owners that before long their "pup", will be HUGE (they grow FAST), and how important EARLY OBEDIENCE TRAINING is/that beyond what this great youtube page offers. Hence, I HIGHLY recommend watching @Maligatormom youtube channel for some SERIOUS guidance and advice on your Dobie pup. Although her "forte" is the BM breed & not the Dobie, the BM in my opinion WAY MORE "needy" of "serious" training than the Dobie, I guess THAT IS MY POINT! STEP-IT-UP if you are "serious" about the Dobie pup you just adopted... DO NOT STOP HERE! This channel (which again, I LOVE and SUPPORT)... is too "SOFT" on what having a Doberman will mean on a person/family. Soooo my advice I guess is just DON'T STOP HERE with your research/understanding of Dobie pups and what THEY need to thrive in a household. And as above mentioned, is one page a recommend (Malialigatormom.com)... but it's just a rec., my genuine ask/req of those reading this right now is to continue your research on Dobies to help establish the best home/lifestyle/upbringing and always keep in mind that they are a seperate/particular breed... JUST ONE (1) EXAMPLE: the "tips" on how to house train a Poople or American Bully may not serve for a Doberman. Peace Out. Namaste.

I have a rescue doberman pincher. She is wonderful. I have had her for over 6 years now. So I really don't know how old she is,but the problem I have is this. With my cellphone I have to turn off the ding alert to my cellphone. It sends my doberman into high anxiety. She has locked herself in the bathroom many of times. So when people come over I ask them to turn their cellphones to vibration mode. For the most part they agree. I have tried to work with this in many occasions. I have left my phone on to try to get her use to the sound. I have gave her reassurance that it is ok. But all I get is her shaking uncontrollably. So something in her puppy stage of life has happened. Just wondering if I could do something different?

It’s difficult to either stand still or leave the playing field while getting bitten. Any suggestions?

When you said, meet the parents the first thought I had was the first chapter in "Marley And Me." If you haven't read it, I cannot recommend it enough. Even though it is about Labs, it applies because Dobies and Labs are high energy and Uber intelligent. They talk about how the breeder wouldn't let them meet the site of the puppy they buy. They describe leaving with the fuzzy, snuggly puppy and his giant lab comes racing around the house, tongue handing out, wild eyes and stops and look at them and then races off plowing brush down as he goes. His wife says, "What was that?" And he says, "I think we just met the dad." I read that when my second lab, Shadow, was about three. He was the wildest, craziest dog I've ever had, he ate everything-tulip bulbs, a whole bag of pig ears, everything that should have killed him but never did. He ate baby Jesus or of our Nativity. I would have traded him for a bag of rocks. When I read that paragraph, I laughed so hard I hurt, out loud. Read it to my husband and we both laughed till we cried. Shadow grass or of his puppy stage between 4 and 5. He is my most treasured dog of all time. Athena is getting close at only two.

Hi... we got an emaciated doberman pinscher (about 1 years old) and found out he has megaesphogus. We have spent so much time and money on getting him healthy but he came with some bad habits. I wanted to take him for training but I'm always worried that trainers don't have the experience with 1) the breed and 2) the ME. We have had him for about 1 1/2 years and our vet says he is doing so good with his weight and health. Do we have to get him special training because of the ME since he can't be food trained or get too excited or else he will regurgitate everywhere? I really want to take him for walks but he is too strong for me to keep control of him.. we do have a big backyard where he can exercise constantly but we love camping but he always barks and misbehaves when we take him for walks. He definitely is not aggressive and want to make sure that we give him the best life possible.

OH My Goodness I am laughing so hard I am crying!!!! As you know I am on my fourth Doberman! Being only 5 foot 1 inch tall I KNOW that I need to be the ALPHA and quickly before they get bigger than me. When I am asked how I do it, I respond with "well the first thing is to teach them English, since after all they only know German" LOLOL Yes, positive reinforcement, repetition, NEVER hit... My current blue boy stands 33 inches from floor to shoulder and weighs in at 151 (not fat, just huge!!) Your video is right on point as always... I loved all of the craziness... in fact after our walk with my giant puppy brain I hand him the leash and he will run and come back and run and come back it is the best game he's ever had.... but when it comes to me holding the leash he knows it is time to listen to the ole Alpha momma... Thank you for making my day with this video... (oh I live in the woods so for me to let him go it is not in a city or anyplace dangerous). This video makes me want to get another puppy brain to start it all over again!!! Love you and Arlo!!!

The issue I'm having is the vet has recommended a type of food due to crystals in his urine and I'm having issues with his coat and him losing hair. It's a chicken issue and told the vet but he doesn't recommend anything else. What could you recommend or a vet here in sacramento area. I've called a few vets that have great ratings but are not accepting new clients. Any other ideas with dog food he doesn't like the raw food

Thanks for the advice :) My pup is 4 months old today, and she is on the bigger side (19 kilograms already...). She is a sweet "little" bundle of joy ,but recently she took up jumping on everyone, not to mention the nipping thing if we run together side by side... I am firm with my commands, and do not praise this kind of behaviour, still I am not having luck with getting her to stop... is it too early to have such high expectations ? the leash training is also under way, although she still gets distracted quite often and starts to pull.... I don't want to be too demanding on her,she is still just a puppy, but what is the normal time limit that she should know these things ...?

We’re having a hard time with the puppy biting. Our 2 month dobe really picks on my mom and bites her. He’s not that bad with other members of the family, but with her it’s rough. Can they pick on someone on purpose? Or could it be a mistake of consistency- we do tell our mom what to do-redirection, consistency, or ignoring him, but I could really use some tips!

Again, what I most need help with you only mention but don't give a solution: Play-biting. I am not a first-time Doberman owner; I'm on my fifth. I have never had this problem before; all of my previous Dobies would wrestle with me, put their mouths around my wrist and hold me but would release the second I told them. Guinness has been a biter since I got him at seven weeks old, and he turned one year old Oct. 1st and he still bites and won't stop until I put a leash on him for control. If I try to redirect him to something else to bite, he by-passes it and goes for my hand. He's not food or treat oriented. I've done everything I've ever known and everything other experts say, but nothing works. He's a great guy, well trained in so many aspects; for example, he is fully off-leash trained and sits and lays down from any distance, as long as he can see me. My second issue is eating: I feed him Taste of the Wild, which by the way is almost double the price here in Korea than America, and I feed him either chicken breast, steak, hamburger, or well-cooked pork every day with his 400 grams of kibble. My problem is two-fold: first, I basically have to force feed him; second, at one year old, he weighs only 70 lbs. and I can see every rib. I've taken him to two vets and they both say he's fine, but I still had blood tests run and his results were good. He's full height (28 inches), and I feel he should weigh a minimum of 80 lbs. Exercises a minimum of two hours a day, full of energy but rests a good amount of the day. I just don't know what to do about his biting or weight. Trust me, nothing could make me let him go, for he's the love of my life (my wife thinks I love him more...hahaha).

My dobe is exactly the same thing. He's 1 and half years old. He doesn't care too much about eating. He'd rather play and wait til he's starving. I started adding half a can of wet food and he's doing better but even still sometimes ignores the food for a few minutes. He also play bites sometimes but he's getting better as I've been correcting him everytime he grabs me instead of the toy.

Seven weeks is too young to take a puppy, the minimum is eight weeks. Part of what they learn that last week with mom & siblings is bite inhibition and appropriate play. So that might be why you're having biting problems now. Also, some dogs are just thinner than others. If you're feeding him a good food, and he's eating as much as he wants, and the vet says he's healthy, then he's fine. The Doberman Talk forum has several threads about weight/height in Dobermans that you might find useful.

@@MELFERN28 Hello. I'm hoping you're right, but like I said, my pups have always quit biting long before 6 months. Then again, I'm from the old school of training, and back then we clamped their mouths shut when they bit and it ended within weeks. I don't hold to that anymore, but it sure worked, and I never had an aggressive Dobie from it.
@professor2771
@professor2771 3 жыл бұрын
@@lyreparadox I whole-heartedly agree with you, but I personally believe a puppy should not be removed from the dame until 10 weeks; however, had you seen the deplorable conditions the dogs and puppies had to endure with this "breeder", and the cold setting in here in Korea in the middle of November, you'd understand why I had to do so. They were kept outside and the puppies separate from their mother, so no warmth from here. If it weren't for the fact that we live in an apartment on the 15th floor, we'd have taken one of his sisters as well. The idiot owned a tire and battery shop and kept them all in the backyard of the shop which was filled with all kinds of trash, including dog poop that was not cleaned up for days. These people do not see dogs as sentient being, but rather tools to be abused in so many ways, as well as eaten. When I did pick my Guinness up, he had poop smeared all over his rear end. For your second comment regarding his weight, that's the reason the inept vet said the same thing. However, a Doberman is not supposed to have excess skin on its neck like a hound dog; it folds over the collar. I've raised enough Dobermans to know this. Neither of these vets have ever seen a Dobie other than mine let alone worked with them over years, so I think I am more of an expert on how they are supposed to appear, health-wise. Beside, vets have just started working with dogs a pets in the last 15 years. Before that, they were always chained up on a one-meter chain at the ends of farm animal pens to keep the wild pigs or wild dogs away, sleeping and eating in the own feces, even their "beloved" national dogs, the Jindo.
