Why does his music sound so modern and refreshing? I think he must have been a time traveller.

He was fairly modern as far as older dead composers go; he's sort of in the middle-upper range for a classical composer and was also regarded as "impressionist," meaning he valued evoking mood and emotions rather than telling a story through music. As reference, he died in 1918, right around the Jazz Age, whereas Mozart died in 1791, Bach in 1750, and Handel in 1759. Others however include Shostakovich who died in 1975 and Rachmaninoff in 1943. TL;DR he sounds pretty modern because he _was_ pretty modern, if you count jazz as such. :>

if i heard correctly, he appreciated the drum symphonies of nations probably looked down upon at the time - commenting that the rhythm of the 'west' was seriously lacking. my teacher said he deserves some credit for jazz. would love to know if this is true... ALSO if you know that you might know if Chopin preferred to play low-key in saloons n stuff. appreciation in advance :)

A good idea: Listen to Cage's "In a landscape" first, then listen to this. The effect is weirdly magical.
