Takes me back to a kinder and gentler time when I used to watch Carson every night. Wish I could go back about 45 years

In 1965 doc played at our highschool talent show. I played the baritone sax in the danceband portion. Wonderful experience.

It makes me happy that people still recognize MUSIC. "Show band, TV band, Jazz band........" WHATEVER. This is music. Played by real people. No filters. No computers. Music. :)

I agree that this is amazing music, but if you're one of those idiots that think digitally created music isn't real music then I have zero respect for you.

He played with our symphony in the mid'80s and nailed the Eb at the end of "A Song for You." (It's only a double Eb, though, being the Eb above double C.)

Harry Betts arranged this LP. He wrote Mexicali Nose for Buddy Rich, a great chart.

Jerry Ringo, I like your use of the word “only”. (It's only a double Eb, though, being the Eb above double C.). Anyone who nails Eb above double C at fff deserves to have it called a “triple” LOL. Has ANYONE ever convincingly nailed Eb above that ?? It’s like being called a supercentenarian once you hit 110 years old - anything above double D deserves the title “triple”!

Trumpet players should join the rest of the music world and adopt the system of naming notes where C4 = middle C on the piano. Then the C above that is C5, then C6, then C7, ...

I have great admiration for Doc . He is one of the great trumpet players of our time,! But his style was that of a lead player . He plays with great precision and technique but lacks emotion inHis style---unlike Harry James. A great trumpet player must always "tell the story", as Bud Herseth used to say, No disrepect to Doc intended whatsoever.

Hal Wheeler mr. wheeler I'll disagree Doc played with plenty of feeling is because of his style of playing that i had to up my game . he made me realize that it has to come from the heart and you have to put your soul into it otherwise you're just reading notes my friend...and thats all i gotta say bout him

Talking absolute Rubbish Hal, Doc has it all, Technique, a fabulous Sound, Emotion, Range and precision timing. His high notes sound as sweet as his notes in the stave. Probably the best all round Trumpet player ever!

You're confusing the styles of music with emotion. Harry James played classic big band style music from the late 30's and early 40's... it had a particular style which you are mistaking for emotion. If you listen to Doc playing music from that same time period he wipes the floor with Harry James who was decent enough band lead but had a god awful tone, sounding very much like he was using a pea shooter trumpet... it just didn't sound good by any stretch of the imagination. Though the style of music at that time did embody a kind of schmaltzy quality that someone might mistake for emotion.

Hal I agree! I too was a great trumpet player I emulated doc.. I also lacked passion/emotion... I lost
