I had the privilege of spending a half hour or so with Doc back stage at the Mountain Music Meltdown in Saranac Lake, NY. He told me "I've asked the Lord that when I get home to heaven, when my eyes first open, that He'll let me see my son Merle first thing when my eyes are opened, then I'll look at Him for the rest of eternity." Made the hair on my arms stand up. It was a great experience, and one of my greatest treasures is a picture of us picking together back stage. A wonderful musician, even better human being.

So sorry for your loss. My mom sang the songs he wrote to me as a child. I'm so glad I found him. I will be able to share them with my grandchildren.

Beautiful interview. Such respect from David Holt. Can you imagine hearing Doc picking songs at 6am through a hotel wall? That sounds like a dream to me!

No one can ever fill Docs shoes but David Holt is a good man a a great musician and storyteller in his own right somebody will certainly need to be filling too. D Doc Watson and David hold our to the people that I can listen to that will help me get through hard days dealing with my wife's death at age 49.

Very nice interview. Appreciate your sharing. I, too, started listening to Doc about 50 years ago, recommended by a local guitar teacher in San Jose, Ca. I got to hear he and Merle once at a small concert in Santa Cruz at a little place called Kuumbwa in the mid-70's. It was just like being at home in a living room. A treasured musical memory. Good story, still meaningful. Thanks again for sharing.

I remember going to MerleFest in North Wilkesboro my 1st time. We were lucky to have backstage passes and was able to sit just out of view of the audience. Doc was playing with the group and it was how he interacted with the other musicians before, during, and after the songs that touched me so. He had such a kind and humble way about him and it was clear he enjoyed them as much as they (and we) enjoyed him. I agree with the people at each show that David talks about, "We love you Doc!".

First saw Doc, Jack Lawrence and T Michael Coleman at the Blue Pelican Restaurant in Newport, RI in 1985. They played there about once a year. The next time I saw them was 1987 in Carver, MA at a Legends of Bluegrass Concert. His duets with Bill Monroe that night were awesome.

Doc passed away just a couple of days before my Grandfather. Same hospital. Not trying to say Im special but ...... it was strange in a good way..? Yeah.. I miss my Papa. My one genuine parental figure. And I miss Doc too. The records, man... wow.. I wish I could have met him.

I read a story about Doc when he was young he said he had strung a wire from the door on a shed or corn crib to a fence post. Then he would lean on the door when plucking the wire to change the pitch of the wire to get different sounds out of it! Not sure if that was before the playing of the harmonica or not. I'm sure it was before his guitar playing days.

What's that song played at the end? It's a good representation of Doc's style.

It’s “Ready For The Times To Get Better”. Crystal Gail had a minor country hit with it in the 80s. Doc put his special touch on it when he recorded it. I heard him play it live a few times. Doc was, is, and always will be my favorite musician, bar none.

David Holt was our local state television guy. :)) He brought us real music and introduced us to real people playing so often. Week after week. He himself could play amazingly. Just blows your mind how well he played too. Holt rocks.
