I once called the operator "hey, can I have the extension number for the radiologist oncall?", The operator said "sure". He immediately connected my call the radiologist. I wasn't even ready to present the case

Say "can you tell me the extension" instead, "can I have" is kind of ambiguous and does sound like you might mean "I want to be connected to"

I hate the switchboard with passion. I am Dr. Kim in rad and nuc med (dual trained). There is another Dr. Kim in rad, there is another Dr. Kim in nuc med, and there is also a Dr. Kim in rad onc. All different first names. We get each others pages ALL THE TIME.

Once I was put on hold to neurosurgery - there’s two divisions - spinal or cranial. And after half hour on hold - turns out the switchboard lady connected me to the wrong division. Cue, another half hour on hold 😭

Ha ha! I sometimes have to work the radiology communication line and we hear a lot of frustrated doctors, we are supposed to screen the calls for the radiologists and it can be a nightmare. We are clerks trying to keep both doctors happy, not an easy job and I do understand both sides of the story.

As a CT technologist myself, don’t ask for CT reading room. Just ask for body reading room if during weekday or ER Reading Room during nights and weekends. It’s not a CT reading room because radiologist read ALL modalities, not just CT :)

That happened to me when I was trying to figure out why I received a card through mail when I closed my bank account. I was connected to 3 different department at PNC all telling me to go to other department. Made 6 calls and finally someone knew the answer...

This is super common!! My job as a radiology coordinator was literally created because of the switch board nightmare. A lot of times Radiology groups are contracted to read for more than one hospital so we have calls coming in from 35+ sites and from all departments. The Rad they need might be in a whole other hospital. Now everyone just calls us and we hunt the Rad/Tech/Rn for them. Way faster for Docs and PTs

Honestly, radiology don't like taking calls in general, and there are genuine instances of Junior doctors mixing up the techs and the radiologists. It always feels like bracing for a explosion when we put calls through to them on Switchboard, because they could come back and rant about how the call wasn't for them when the caller clearly said radiologist not radiographer..

Our switchboard sends all calls to the MS unit no matter who they ask for, even when the family gave them the full name and room number and the person is on ICU or ER. Every time I complain they say we have more time to deal with it. Really!!! NO!!!

I hate when the one answering the call lets you ramble on and on before telling you you've got the wrong person. That being said, I myself have let an ER physician walk me through multiple ABGs of a pt by phone, making all kinds of calculations in my head before asking "...and what is the neurology question?" -she apparently wanted the pulmonologist.

Trust me, the techs hate this just as much as you do. People always be callin' the x-ray hub or CT console room expecting to be speaking to a rad. We're generally nicer about it though, and will happily transfer you to the reading room...without the attitude.
