We have boxes filled with 3 hook worms in all sorts of colors. They are called Chuck's Worms around the Northern Illinois area. A bunch of us would buy them by the dozens when we fished Kentucky Lake and Northern Wisconsin lakes. Bass, crappie and big bluegill will eat them up. Taught my daughters and son-in-law bass fishing with them. Great lures for sure. Love your shows and your always upbeat attitude about bass fishing :)

Red eye shads, squarebills, deep cranking for northern largemouth. Love the dirt Z! I have been fishing the alpena area for years and been smashing them. A little tough right now because all the hot weather. Which most times doesnt go well with great lakes smallmouth. But spring was phenomenal and looking forward to getting some this fall!

Hey Mark I would like to see a video of how to tell the feel of a bite on different lures.
@murphroberts4891
@murphroberts4891 3 жыл бұрын
Many times you don't feel a thing, which is why good teachers forever stress watching your line. "How to tell the feel of a bite on different lures" is a lot to ask because you can get bit so many ways on any single lure. The most obvious worm bite is a distinct bump from a fish that inhales the worm from behind it. The problem is, the fish may take the worm from any of the other 359 degrees in the circle, not to mention from above or below. The most obvious moving bait bite is the one that tries to stop the forward momentum of the bait. But many strikes come from fish attacking from only a mildly tangental angle where it's likely to feel mild resistance, mushiness or weightlessness. You can't rely on someone telling you this stuff. You need to spend time on the water, presenting baits and setting the hook. You're going to lose some baits in stumps & things but you'll also learn when your lure ran into a stump compared to getting a bite. Last week I lost a 1 day old Thunder Cricket because some dumbass threw an office chair into the water where there had been nothing to hang up on the week before.

How do you keep the spool from sticking and skipping under your thumb when skipping docks? I end up with over run and a little backlash. It is hard to beat dock fishing, I just have this one issue.

Awesome Dirt Z! I really need to practice my skipping. Let just say I’m terrible at it lol. As a topic, how about Carolina rigging for smallmouth? Usually if I get on a boat with a buddy to fish, it’s Lake Erie.

Those are great dock skipping tips. Thanks Mark! You may have mentioned this, but perhaps I missed it. What length rod do you use for dock skipping? I like to skip with a 6'6" medium heavy or heavy action rod. Too long a rod makes it difficult to do the roll cast and makes it more difficult to be accurate in my opinion. I met you several years ago in Lexington, KY when you guys visited Backwaters bait and tackle shop. It was great meeting you in person. Love your Zona Live shows!

Why do you skip a 1/2 over 3/8 ths etc . I'm guessing the added weight and inertia with the rod loading up ?

No one talks about rod lengths and actions . I use a 6ft 8 heavy fast action , for taller folks I'm guessing 7ft or bigger maybe .

I'm convinced I'll never be able to skip. Every time I try I get backlash, and then reach for my spinning gear. :(
@jwluciano
@jwluciano 4 жыл бұрын
The best way to learn to skip with a bait caster is to use heavier fluorocarbon line like 17 lbs to 20 lbs test. Anything lighter than that and you are not only more likely to backlash, but you are also asking for trouble if that bass winds you around a gnarly dock post. One other trick that can help you is to simply spool less line on your baitcaster so there is not as much on the spool that can backlash. Don't give up! It is definitely better using baitcasting rods to control the big bass when they do bite
