Docking A Super Yacht Without a Bow Thruster!!! (Captain's Vlog 90)

We do a full tour around the world famous sailing yacht A, I would really like to heart your thoughts. Drone footage of the fortress on the Cannes island where the Man in the Iron mask originated from. Lift anchor, cruise to Cannes port and at the end of the day we dock in port Canto without using the bow thruster.
Captain Tristan Mortlock is an award winning Super Yacht Captain with over 15 years experience. He started his yachting career in his teens and now runs one of the most successful charter yachts in the world. Tristan is currently serving on Motor Yacht AWOL, a San Lorenzo SD122, built in 2009. Personally I think S/Y A is a magnificent display of craftsmanship and ingenuity. The design isn’t for everyone but I think it’s glorious. Kudos to Andrey for pushing the envelope. There are enough cookie-cutter yachts on the water to satisfy the masses, I’m glad there’s something distinct out there as well.

Wowzers.....Super Yacht Captain, Super Yacht Multi-taker. Beautiful scorching hot day, an amazing anchorage, incredible drone footage and then a magnificent docking w/o the use of bow thrusters. Yet in the midst of it all, the Captain, managed to squeeze in a haircut, mid vlog, if I'm not mistaken. Legend !

I’m not sure how I feel. You can’t help but stare at its size and girth. I do admire the craftsmanship. I would love to see the interior. I’m sure it’s so different than what you think from seeing it on the outside. It almost is like a yatch tanker or that’s what comes to mind. Great video. So jealous of where you are at right now. Tristan, just noticed the guy cleaning the windows. Well done on that 😊 I ran a Tour Company, here in Ireland and one of my biggest bug bears was to get the drivers to clean the glass during the Tour. It’s only a small thing, but clean glass always makes for better memories. Give your guests good memories to take home and hopefully that will bring them back again. 😊

Yesterday I docked our yacht ARGO in a tight spot Tristan style, without touching the bownthruster . Cant deny I had a smile in my face once done. Much smaller yacht but equally rewarding .....

Sailing yacht A is unique I like her a lot. I know that her windows are tinted in the color of the yacht... She stands out for sure.... I think that's why her owner likes her. She is definitely something to talk about.

I'm a sailor since birth. Who could not look with awe at the designs of Herreshoff, Fife, Sparkman & Stephens, the lines of Jboats.....the list goes on. Then there is A....in my opinion not the most beautiful craft on the water but so ugly that it sort of grows on you. I admire the imagination of the design team. I think it's way cool that you help out the crew with some of the more mundane chores aboard.

As obvious from a lot of the comments below, SY A sparks a lot of extreme opinions. I personally think it is quite striking. It takes a little getting used to. It is not really so much a yacht, or a ship, but it is a half billion dollar work of art. Like it or hate it, it is a rather spectacular exhibit either way. Very futuristic looking.

Hi Tristan! I was lucky enough to be in Cartegena and this yacht was berthed there having some work done. What I would say until you see this sailing yacht in real life you don't appreciate its beauty and enormity! It is a spectacular sight and the design lines are just pure perfection in my eyes. I credit the guy who had it built, as you are sure you're never ever going to see anything else much like it. Apart from Motor Yacht 'A' his other little toy designed by Mr Starck ! :) Great Vlog and keep them coming! An avid viewer J :)

hahaha !!!!! woww !!! no bow thruster use it !!!! on that size !!! you are my kind of skipper !!!!!!! old fashions style. working out the 2 screws and the rudder stuck right on the middle. this is the way it has to be done. Nowadays you see bow and stern thruster PLUS joistick control on 33' boats, and even so they crash against the dock !!!!!!! well done !!

Saw sailing Yacht "A" two years ago in front of Ibiza harbor. Was sailing from Mallorca to Alicante doing a boat transfer. We passed SY A and we couldn't stopp bragging how ugly it looks for a sailboat. Enough said. However, one has to admid that building this boat offered a lot of people an income and does it to this day. BTW: It's my birthday today! Have all a wonderfull time!

SY "A" looks a tad bow heavy and lacks symmetry of lines, but if the owner/s like it then it's all good. Captain, you owned those rudders and wheels at the end there. Keep them coming.

The first 999 times I saw SY A in photos and video, I thought it looked awful. ON the thousandth time, it clicked with me. It's the sailing form of an artful sculpture and now it's arguably my favorite design. I never did like MY A though.

Haha !! you docked without thruster !! just with the screws ..! like an old experienced Capt !!!! Loved to see this .. I do from time to time to do not loose my edge !!! Well done !! 1 year ago I fired a controversial fight in youtube because ALL new captains want to use joysticks ,wireless and so to dock and maneuver the yachts. I said you need to be able to dock a large yacht WITHOUT special aids if necessary, and everybody throw me under the bus for the comment !!! Same happening with paper charts. From time to time i like to look at them and think for a moment how to plot a route without modern aids.

Bobbed in the waters off Corfu's old fort for months all last summer..looked like a cross between a junk boat and a galleon ship...looked perfact off that 14th Century fort ramparts. It fit this island treasure.

S Y A was a regular sight for me last year when it was docked in Cartagena Murcia Spain for a few months, undergoing repairs as far as i am aware , certainly stands out amongst other Yacht's , think it would look more at home in a War zone.

Another great video of big Yacht, little space. Regarding SY A I love everything about this Yacht. If you take away the sails and look at 12500 gross tonnes without any real super structure above the deck and the clean angle lines make her look beautiful. I will have to get one of those with my next billion. Keep it up Captain, love your videos.

Super Yacht A in full sail and closed up, looks awesome. With that said, I don’t like the closed ness of the yacht. I definitely prefer a very open layout on yachts, with lots of open air decks.

I sailed past A when she was under construction in germany. Im not sure what I think of it, I have never seen it under full sails tho. I do belive that would be a mighty sight. But with so much funds, I personaly would have built a yacht with classical lines. Or... maybe something like AWOL, she's a real beauty! 😁

Funny seeing everyone hating A, personally i dont particularly like the design but i also dont hate it. Its a cool yacht, its different. If u have the money then why not, be different. I mean most yachts looks basically more or less the same, a non boat person could easily mistake one yacht for another, but there is no mistaking the A yacht. People really need to open their minds rather than hating and judging everything.

I have seen A before and I still cannot get to like the silhouette, because to me it looks like s submarine on a dive manoeuvre. I think that the traditional shape still looks sleek, clean and aesthetically pleasing to look at. The interior may be spectacular and exclusively furnished but no, not for me. I really enjoy the videos, especially the drone clips. Regards to the crew, keep safe and look forward to the next vlog.

2:11 i like how the smaller (shallower depth) balcony on the deck above the lowest deck creates a bit of shade to the lower deck balcony‼️ ☀️ Also how the badging is offset to port so it’s still visible when the balconies are deployed, as most badging is centered❗️😉👍🏽👍🏽 Seems the SY’s name is “A. As a sailing yacht - mjah... BUT if you look at the A as a work of art, it captures gallions, historical traders and ships of the line, in about the same way the iPhone summarized the candy bar cellphones... and merges it with imperial star cruisers.. to be perfectly honest, its flipping brilliant. don't wanna dock it in narrow quarters ever... but hey, thats what the skipper gets paid for.

Thanks as usual for a great video. Regarding SY A, not my favorite by any means. I am a traditionalist when it comes to sailboats, large or small. Had a chance to see the Maltese Falcon a few years ago in the Caribbean, its a 3 masted schooner, much closer to what i consider a true sailing yacht. Yacht A has loads of intriguing history, it’s been seized, sued over, the multi million pound paint job issues, lose of use monies damages and loads more. In a roundabout way it could highlight that while these yachts may be amazing to look at, admire and envy over. They can, to those in the yachting and associated industries be a nightmare or even a don’t touch with a barge pole type build 😬

Really cool videos! I think A gives me a cold feeling. Something you'd see a James bond baddy rolling around in. It would be cool to see your helm control while you are docking. Doesn't seem like you use the bow thruster as much as I thought would be needed to maneuver in those tight spaces.

Sailing Yacht A, Like it has already been said is an acquired taste. There are some design features I like about it but as a whole it isn't for me. Also that is just way to large for my liking regarding a sailing yacht. The 75m S/Y M5 is also to large but I like that disign. However the 43m S/Y Koo is one of my dream vessels. Now if your talking motor yacht I would like Ulysses. Thanks for another great video.

Both you and your crew are clearly very skilled at mooring Awol stern to. Have you ever considered adding a stern facing camera to give you a clear view astern when reversing into a berth with a display on the Port or Starboard helm?

Love the Yachts. They all look good! If I was going to point some thing out, it would be the lack of colors. More than just white ,black,grey. I would like to see some bright colors, in the Yachts and sails. This is just my opinion.

S/Y A. - I can appreciate this is a design which pushes the boundaries and shows possibilities for the future, but it's a bit like avant garde haute couture - you can admire the breaking of the mould, but, well, you really wouldn't ever want to wear it!
