Do you know when the original trains were replaced? I think it was probably around 1992 or 1993.

@@raymondwalsh7957 Thanks. I'm fascinated by the early history of the DLR, but it's difficult to find out a lot of information about it. For example, it's well known that the doors didn't actually open at the Canary Wharf stop for a long time because there was nothing there, no reason to get off since it was just a building site, but it's difficult to find out when the doors did open for the first time. That's the sort of nerdy information I'm interested in.

So many memories of when i first started using the dlr probably in 2004/5 when i was like 13/14😔 Now im 30 and life is reallll boy, not only personally, but politically also, life is headed in a different direction, gone are the good old days😌

I must say, it is a transport masterpiece from an area that was at one stage going nowhere. Canary Wharf is an interesting station, three tracks, passengers at either end of the platforms boarding at the same time. Tower Gateway as of 2017 is still there so is Bank in the heart of the Square Mile. Since this video was filmed, Woolwich Arsenal as of 2017 is one of many stations added to the ever growing network of the Docklands Light Railway. Like Greenwich and Lewisham, it is linked with National Rail services. A busy summer ahead with the Athletics World Championships that will probably match to that of the 2012 Olympics. My earliest memory of the DLR was in 1990 from Island Gardens to Tower Gateway while on a day out to Greenwich.

Canary Wharf was an interesting station when the system first opened in 1987, because officially there was a stop there, and it was on the maps, etc. But although the train stopped, the doors didn't open, because there was nothing there, so no reason for anyone to get off.

Great video. I lived on the Isle of Dogs between 1996 and 2003 and used the DLR nearly every day, including the original Island Gardens station. The video mentions that the Lewisham extension was completed ahead of schedule. Was surprising at the time as the contractor for the tunnels under the Thames managed to blow one of them up leaving a massive crater in sports pitch of the local school (George Green School). For a long time afterwards you could seen mud stains against the white walls of the school!

I remember the original formation and trains very well indeed. Though those inward opening doors were obviously a design blunder from day one

LDDC sponsored Millwall football club in 1984-85. I remember seeing that on their shirts when they played at Luton in the 6th round of the FA cup ( the infamous ‘ riot ‘ game ).

If you're following it recently, that would be because it was removed and converted to third rail only, as part of the extension/Overground conversion works?
