Also, when considering the level of magnetism of the steel you have to consider the thickness✌️

That was not a dumb comment about stainless steel…. Certain alloys of stainless steel are not magnetic. However, some alloys are very magnetic . 316 stainless steel most commonly used in food grade applications is not magnetic .✌️

Please refer to my reply about Austenitic Stainless steel. Becasue the comment was dumb. As it was being applied to to "Stainless steels", not some types, a specific family of, or as I said before, technically, only the family of Austenitic stainless steels...which would not have been remotely relevant to the video the comment was made on.

Is 100% stainless steel magnetic? It depends on what type of stainless you're using. Some steels are only weakly magnetic, and some are not magnetic at all. Austenitic stainless steels like 304 or 316 stainless are good examples of this. A ferritic stainless like 430 stainless steel, on the other hand, is ferromagnetic.

"In summary, whether a magnet will stick to stainless steel depends on the type of stainless steel and the strength of the magnet. Austenitic stainless steels are generally non-magnetic, while ferritic and martensitic stainless steels are magnetic" .....also, why won't magnets stick to the front of my refrigerator, if in fact, all stainless is magnetic?
@DocP91B
@DocP91B 4 ай бұрын
You are the first person to correctly quote that ONLY Austenitic Stainless Steels are non-magnetic. That was my issue with the guy. He said "Stainless Steel" is not magnetic. That is wrong. One family, and one only - Austenitic is non-magnetic. That type of steel is used for specific applications. Spoiler alert - NOT knives and field gear outside of kitchen utensils.

The lockpick kit is a good starter kit. But for $9.99 it better be made of some good materials. I've opened locks with a bent pair of tweezers and a paper clip so those will work.

Hey, the real Chris Brown. Was just trying to make the point that some stainless is not magnetic and that does not mean it is aluminum .

OK, that guy's comment was that "stainless steel" is non- magnetic. He made that comment on a knife review. The only type of non-magnetic stainless steel is Austenitic stainless steel. It's a small family of material and it isn't used for knife blades outside of certain kitchen types, because it can't be hardened the same way Martensitic Stainless Steel can be. So his comment was pointless as it would have zero relation to a folding knife in the first place. But again, he either didn't know enough to know it is just one specific family of materials specify which type of material don't have a magnetic attraction or didn't know enough to specify Austenitic when commenting. Austenitic Stainless is more expensive to produce that Martensitic due to the component elements and processing. It's used in kitchen and industrial/commercial/construction applications where corrosion, thermal, and electrical resistance far outweigh the need for hardness or toughness. That's why we don't see it in standard knife blades and field equipment. It is sometimes used in marine equipment, as is Dendritic Steel - but for water exposed blades we have specific high corrosion resistant Martensitic Stainless Steels that offer all around performance. There's no reason to suggest that we would be dealing with a non-magnetic Stainless Steel in a standard knife review video, unless the guy honestly has o idea what he's really talking about. When the video is about stainless steel water tanks, marine grade construction, kitchen utensils, and outdoor utilities, lets talk all about it. When it comes to things like the cup in this box the weight is a very obvious indicator, alongside the lack of magnetic attraction. No Stainless is that light. The gross material that goes into that cup, looking at the thickness of the wall, could produce three to four folding knife blades if you were to roll it out and stamp blanks out of it. On the scale it weighs a total of 2.1 oz. A true steel cup that size should have a weight 4 - 5 times that.

I'm thinking red horse civil engineers in the air force do the same thing. The go out alone and build a base is what I'm referring to. I was the prime beef side of civil engineering (decades ago 😂) so not speaking from experience with red horse. Anyway thanks for the fun video. That brass tube would be nice for some ear plugs (I keep some with me all the time loud noise stresses me out).

I'll give a LOT of credit where credit is due Red Horse goes out to where nothing is and builds an honest to God base! There's nothing...BAM! There's a runway, there's an Ops bunker, there's an Ammo shed, there's a maintenance hanger, there's a chow hall. Then for fun they start things like the Rec Tent, the showers, the EVERYTHING! No, we just put up the bare necessities and didn't actually build anything. basically dropped a CONEX, dug some holes, put up some tents, a couple of dishes and antennas, and layed out some concertina. We could never do what Red Horse does!

Also, if you’re unsure if it is stainless steel or aluminum take a file to it aluminum is very soft and stainless steel is very hard.

the box was so-so...the knife and "stool" are jokes. The firestarter I can see as a back up at best. the cup might have been either a picking error or a mislabeling on the sheet..but still useful. the rest are pretty solid though. I give a B-

I wore the gloves for gardening this past weekend. They were pretty comfortable, and I left the out in the rain. When the dried the next day in the sun they shrink just the tiniest bit, but they were still soft and easy to work in.

The only type of Stainless Steel that is not magnetic is Austenitic Steel. Every Stainless steel used for knife making is Martensitic. Every Martensitic Steel has magnetic attraction. Every high end Stainless steel that we describe as a "super steel" is Martensitic, not Austenitic. They are all Magnetic. Austenitic is used for kitchen utensils, water tanks, outdoor utilities, etc. Not anything that needs to hold a decent Rockwell Hardness, or serve as a tool. Please know what you're talking about before you comment.

Real stainless is not magnetic, im sorry that hurts your feelings, i use to build cell towers, its a fact
@DocP91B
@DocP91B 3 ай бұрын
So here's where you 100% wrong. You were working with austinitic stainless steel. That is only one of many types of stainless steel. The principle type of stainless steel used in knife blades and tools is martinsitoc. Martinsitic is absolutely 100%, magnetic because of the elemental makeup. The two other main family of stainless steels is Ferritic (I bet you can tell just from the name is is highly. Magnetic) and Duplex - also magnetic. The stainless steel you worked with, and therefore assume all stainless is the same, was Austin otic probably because it has a higher corrosion resistance and in more easily machinable. It doesn't have the properties of steels that can be hardened the way you would to form a cutting esge. A cell tower, sitting out in the open 24/7 for years would never be made of a martinsetic for Ferritic steel. It would rust and corrode out exposed like that. That's why you think all stainless is non magnetic. If you need some resources to look and and learn a bit about different steel types let me know. I'd be glad to drop some. Links here for you.
