Congratulations on the marriage. I hope it helps you both grow and develop in wisdom and love! I haven't been here for a while, but you were very helpful to me when I was considering graduate medicine about 5 or 6 years ago. I myself went through something similar in a relationship but couldn't get over the line on the truth claims. I would be interested in how you managed to reconcile yourself with some of the sayings in the Qur'an and the truth claims in general. e.g. 9:123 "O you who believe! Fight those of the unbelievers who are near you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard against evil." I found myself torn between the welcoming and generous community and family and my inability to see truth in the scripture, and at times I found some of the commands were against my moral compass. So, I would be interested to see how you have been engaging with the texts in this process! Wishing you both the best!

Circumcision is optional in Islam I.e. not compulsory. Not all Muslims are circumcised.

For converts circumcision is something optional. Even for a newborn, though most Muslims do it within the first week, as that is the best time to also do it scientifically. The older a person gets, the more complications are likely when undergoing the procedure. Diet & alcohol aren't that difficult. It's just no pork products & alcohol. It only benefits you to give those up.

I know you are not happy with some of the comments but most people are on your side and worried for you and they can see the red flags from Mars. You are an intelligent and good-looking man, you will not have a problem finding love, ever. Do not rush into things, you are way too young to get into a serious relationship anyway. She said it all...before i even heard that part relating to ollie being a doctor, i said to myself she would have never been attracted to him if he was not a doctor. In islam these professions are highly regarded and any muslim involving themselves with a non muslim in those 4 professions ... doctors being at the top of that list will bend the rules completely. It brings prestige to their wider family. Love as we all know in muslim communities, does not come into it, as Dr Asif stated clearly, muslim marriages are arranged..ie love does not come into the equation. I can bet you my life if ollie was a bus driver she would not have given him a second look. Sad to say, but i feel she is rather shallow. Would Dr Asif convert to christianity...no i am afraid not. That is apostasy and Under islamic law that would be grounds for severe punishment even death if they were in an islamic country.. .It does not work that way..but ollie had to. Totally unfair and not godly whatsoever. God doesnt care whether you are muslim, christian, hindu, jewish or whatever else you declare yourself as...its those who follow those religions who care. Love is all that matters. This should be at the heart of all marriages, and relationships. Without true love it wont work. Time will only tell if it does with these two. I have my doubts. Will their children if they do get married be brought up as muslims, christians or even atheists if they choose to be. No, unfortunately Dr Asif and her family will dictate affairs...if Dr Asifs family are devout muslims that will be a big problem for ollie..and his family wont have any say in the matter. Will ollie have a choice or will dr asif have her way. My prediction is clear...it will be Dr Asifs way..i have seen it a few times in my life with friends who have had inter religious marriages, it ultimately doesnt work unless real true love is what glues the couple together. If Dr asif were to go against her parents and brothers wishes, to seek a life with ollie, then i would hold hope that it would work. If they didnt approve, what would dr asif have done? To me its totally skewed towards her side of things, without giving ollie much say at all.

Look, we need to carefully separate religion and culture here. What Aqua was specifically talking about was the pressure in Asian communities (not Muslim communities, although there will be overlap) for these professions. We met through the internship, it's not like we passed on the street or something spontaneous like that. We're both doctors, and therefore more likely to end up with other healthcare professionals. But the grander point was the idea that my being a doctor made the interactions with her parents somewhat easier - which would have perhaps been harder if I was a bus driver, specifically because her family is medical.

Her family and their religious beliefs will be an ever encroaching factor on your lives. I bet you if marriage happens it will be a muslim marriage, you will not have any say in the matter. You openly admitted to having issues a while back or at least she did. I hope it works out for you ollie, stand your ground and dont be bullied by those in her family who will try and dictate terms. Her mother will be the problem.

@@dombarton2483 I kinda agree with you (excluding the part about whether or not love is in the equation, not my business or yours really). Ollie says he's a humanist but Islam goes against that (with regard to homosexuality / queer / non-muslims). Then again, we are individuals and religion is a huge influence on a lot of our lives so I'm not going to say what's wrong or right but that's my view. On the other hand, I'm glad they didn't let religion become a barrier, but it's weird. Nevertheless I wish the best for both!

Ollie wants to become a neurosurgeon but aqua's parents won't let her become one. Good Muslim girls do girly jobs like gp and dermatology, not real jobs like neurosurgery or orthopaedic surgery. I say this as an indian woman who's training in orthopaedics.
