They are basically an adaptation on a standard oscillating multi tool. The main difference is the movement is smaller and the teeth on the blade are very small. The worst problem is usually that it can snag and pull strands in the under layer of the cast, or possibly (but rarely) snag a hair and pull it out.

I've been doing casts over 10 yrs now and will hold the blade in my fingers and tap it on my arm. I reinforce that the padding put on the cast serves a purpose and that's why you shouldn't pick at the cotton. If I'm working with kids, I call it the tickle machine, either they laugh or scream cry. Lol I have touched a warm blade that had been ON for several consecutive cast removals and a cat scratch is worse than what I felt.

I was really afraid when they did this to me. I had hairline fracture of radius and was bandaged for the same. Memory just popped up seeing this.

When I was twelve, I had my big toes fused (thanks CMT). When they were cutting the plaster casts off, the guy hit one of the pins with the cast saw. It may not cut skin, but sending a vibration like that into the tip of your big toe via a stainless steel pin can make it feel like your whole leg if about to come off.

At 6 yo I broke my arm in two places. Had a cast all the way up to my shoulder. The whole time I was terrified of when I had to take it off. It was fine. I don’t even remember it that well. Just remember my had smelling TERRIBLE after.

I was bone with a broken bone so I had to get this done I was probably 5. It took an hour to get it off because of how scared I was 😅

Ngl I thought that they were made out of diamonds. You can’t cut yourself on a diamond saw even at it’s sharpest. Diamond can only cut hard objects, not sharp. Those types of blades rely on friction to cut so when you put a fleshy object in front of it, the blade sort of doesn’t know what to do and just pushes it out of the way and continues cutting the nearby hard object. I only know this because in 3rd grade my teacher let a guy with a diamond circular saw take the blade to my hand, I was fucking terrified. Dude turned it on full speed and just pressed it into my hand. I still have my hand.

when I broke my l pinky I had to get a cast (obviously) but when it had to come off I was scared but the doctor showed me it didn’t hurt by putting her finger on it. It actually tickles when it’s taking off a cast

I would say I've had a few body casts cut off. The blade can get VERY hot. It can hurt.

when my little sister broke her arm and took off her cast, the doctor cut it off and cut off her skin too, it started bleeding so much and my sister still has the mark till this day
