This might be the most painful thing that can happen to someone on the field. The amount of force needed to break and dislocate a hip is huge

Emmanuel Guzman I didn’t either. My first thought was immediately “Will this drop his draft pick”. This now seems insensitive, and all I’m hoping is that he can recover from this and not have to live the rest of his life in chronic pain. That being said, there’s hope that he can get through this and still be able to play.

This entire situation makes me sick for Tua and his Family. All of them have worked so hard and have sacrificed so much to get Tua where he was. This is a very humbling lesson that you cannot take what you have for granted, as it can be taken away from you in an instant. It's hard for me to explain how much I appreciate your videos. They stand in stark contrast to most KZbin commentaries: no unnecessary intro, no tangents in the wrap-up, you get right to the point and proceed as though you are well rehearsed so there's no stammering or grasping for what to say next. @ImNotMad ButUR Not disputing what your saying here but it certainly contradicts what the team surgeon is saying; full recovery is what they are saying. Also it is a bit over the top to talk about getting back to normal life and walking on his own. Worst case scenario where football is out I don't think walking is going to be a problem. My 80 year old father in law is walking fine a month after hip replacement surgery. If it comes to that, his quality of life it won't be any different than 99.9% of the rest of us that don't play NFL football.

This man needs support and prayers! Forget football for now maybe forever. . this is a Life altering injury and you are absolutely right, Brian, his Quality of life should be his focus, because it is that serious speaking from experience. I suffered a partial dislocation of my right hip in a workplace accident with damage to my femoral head, lumbar and sacroiliac joint 7 years ago at 21 years of age. I was a multi-sport athlete in High-school and recruited to compete at the Div II level for University Football. After my accident suffered while working a summer warehousing job that involved me being driven over and pinned under a forklift operator to the extent actually much less severe than Tua's, I was able to recover, although it is not the same injuries exactly of course, I never returned to sports and to this day I have a permanent limp when tired and need support managing the residual physical and psychological pains of such a significant and life changing injury. . Tua you are strong, Believe this and have faith, sending so much love, brother!

Great video I learned from it. I can tell anyone that this is very painful injury. I had surgery to repair my hip 2 plates and 8 screws later I can walk fairly normal still have small limp but my Dr is opptmist that I will recover if not 100% 90 to 95% back to normal

I at 75 i broke my hip on a fall bad surgery I had to more surgeries and three dislocations one getting up from the sofa one getting up on my bed leg first one more 10 days after putting back i dislocated again. Third surgery that was 4 months ago. Just praying it don't happen again. Pray that TUA can play football again. Rehab is very important to strngthen the muscle around the hip. EV

Hey I am an aspiring ortho surgeon and i love your channel. Could you consider making a video about the idea of 'load management' that sweeping the NBA and the impact of playing high intensity sport on a nightly basis can have on the body?

Had this exact thing happen to my hip in a car wreck. Can confirm that he will not be the same athlete that he was before. I'm a Sooner fan but it really made me about half sick when I heard what happened. Tua seems like such a great young man, I hope he recovers from this better than I did.

has any athlete ever came back from a hip dislocation?
@schweedy1985

Any athlete in general? Definitely. Technically speaking Bo Jackson himself came back from his injury. Just not to football. He played at least a couple more seasons in baseball afterwards.(he played in both the NFL and MLB if you didn't know) So can a a football player come back? That I don't have anyone in mind for.

CJ Mosley like he said ^^^^ But it's very situational of course. Tua's could be worse than CJ's. Hopefully not. Poor kid.

Mosley had a dislocation with no fracture, which is significantly different from Tua's dislocation with a posterior wall fracture.

Great video doc! I believe you can tie his existing ankle injury directly to the method of injury from this Saturday. High ankle sprains often involve a MOI of excessive dorsiflexion, one of the most common associated symptoms after a significant ankle injury is a loss of range of motion in the talocrural joint...combine that with bracing of the ankle for the game and his biomechanics have to change to compensate. Research in stroke patients shows a loss of ankle dorsiflexion is compensated for by increased hip flexion. In the video of his injury you provided you can see him avoid dorsiflexion during his stance phase (he is still injured) of the right foot and the leg "giving way", excessive hip flexion compensation leads to his knee being caught under his body. I believe this was a freak accident, but his pre-existing injury had some influence.
