My 80 year old father in law is walking fine a month after hip replacement surgery. I suffered a partial dislocation of my right hip in a workplace accident with damage to my femoral head, lumbar and sacroiliac joint 7 years ago at 21 years of age. I was a multi-sport athlete in High-school and recruited to compete at the Div II level for University Football. After my accident suffered while working a summer warehousing job that involved me being driven over and pinned under a forklift operator to the extent actually much less severe than Tua's, I was able to recover, although it is not the same injuries exactly of course, I never returned to sports and to this day I have a permanent limp when tired and need support managing the residual physical and psychological pains of such a significant and life changing injury. . Great video doc! I believe you can tie his existing ankle injury directly to the method of injury from this Saturday. High ankle sprains often involve a MOI of excessive dorsiflexion, one of the most common associated symptoms after a significant ankle injury is a loss of range of motion in the talocrural joint...combine that with bracing of the ankle for the game and his biomechanics have to change to compensate. Research in stroke patients shows a loss of ankle dorsiflexion is compensated for by increased hip flexion. In the video of his injury you provided you can see him avoid dorsiflexion during his stance phase (he is still injured) of the right foot and the leg "giving way", excessive hip flexion compensation leads to his knee being caught under his body. I believe this was a freak accident, but his pre-existing injury had some influence.
