I feel like some commenters are missing the point here. Yes, lots of things are way more likely to kill you than a nose-hair-plucking induced brain infection, but all he's saying is that if you think you are particularly susceptible to infections, pulling your nose hairs might be a slight increase in risk that you in particular might want to avoid if you can.
@Tera_GX
@Tera_GX 6 ай бұрын
The order of his words doesn't quite send that message. Mentions weak immune systems literally as the last detail. Leads with "This is why YOU should never pull out nose hairs".
@croma2068
@croma2068 6 ай бұрын
@@Tera_GX Point given, but I feel like making an attention-grabbing opening statement is kind of a necessity in the short-form video landscape. The hardest part is getting people to stop scrolling and listen, you can clarify after you've got people's attention. The same applies to the rest of the video - if you start your explanation by saying "this will probably only affect you if you belong to this or that niche group" means that anyone who doesn't think they belong to one of those groups will immediately keep scrolling. I agree that it's misleading in the short term, but in the environment for which these videos are being produced, this is the most effective tactic both for spreading awareness and for retaining viewers.

As a physician myself, I disagree. The assumption that germs can enter the blood circulation from working the nose maybe true but the chances of that happening are extremely remote. I have been safely exfoliating my nose hairs for years and it helps me breath much better than not doing so because I have narrow nasal passages. So the advice is theoretically true and can apply to any blood vessel in most parts of the face. The point is if you are not immunocompromised, it’s safe to exfoliate.

So one thing to keep in mind is that the brain has something called the "blood brain barrier" which keeps a ton of substances out of our brain.....including antibiotics and antivirals. THAT'S why you shouldn't pluck nose hair. IF you do get the rare infection it's going to be VERY difficult to treat.
@danielowits2727
@danielowits2727 6 ай бұрын
That's complete bullshit. Several antibiotics pass the blood brain barrier. It's how Meningitis is treated.
@andrewtarquinio6788

Wouldn't the same barrier keep out bacteria and viruses, which are many times larger than antimicrobials?
@LookAtThisRock
@LookAtThisRock 6 ай бұрын
@@andrewtarquinio6788 Not always. That's why Naegleria fowleri (Brain-eating amoeba) is so devastating, we can't get the treatments to the brain but the amoeba can. It usually travels through the sinus' into the brain (common source is using tap water and not pre-boiled water in neti pots or getting pond water up the nose).
@Casein_nitrat3
@Casein_nitrat3 5 ай бұрын
@andrewtarquinio6788 the barrier mostly only works for large/charged substances such as drugs. Living microorganisms, if they overwhelm brain's defensive cells can very much cross that barrier
@Casein_nitrat3
@Casein_nitrat3 5 ай бұрын
While you're mostly right, in cases of meningitis the bbb becomes leaky and not as effective so drugs can cross it much easily compared to a normal healthy brain but the pathogens that cause the infection,especially if its spread from the nares could be highly drug resistant so that in itself would make iy difficult to treat. For example, Staph Aureus also known as MRSA (Methicilin Resistant Staph Aureus) is part of nasal vestibules normal flora and its a highly drug Resistant abscess forming bacteria. If it reaches the brain it will cause a v nasty infection. Yes the chances of it spreading from the nose are v slim but is it really worth the risk?

I'm a liberal and experimental person when it comes to decorating and dressing one's body but it seems to me that facial piercings are just mildly annoying distraction and not attractive. When I see piercings on a person's face, it's like seeing a big pimple on the face and trying not to look at it; I get a powerful urge to fix it throughout the entire conversation. There used to be this cartoon in which there was a caricature prehistoric family named the "Flintstones". They had animal bones stuck in their hair as adornment. That's what comes to mind when I see something stuck through a person's nose. And some people who have their tongue pierced never do learn to talk quite as clearly around it. They sound just like what they are: someone trying to talk around an object stuck inside the mouth. There are so many other practical places on the body and lots and lots of skin to pierce. It just makes more sense to do those unless having those piercings is a huge part of your personal statement and they just must be seen by everyone.

Gotta put percentages on stuff like this. I believe it's possible to get a brain infection from plucking a nose hair (because a doctor is telling me so) but I'd bet half the people I know pull out their nose hairs. Never known anybody to die from a brain infection. I low key expect him to break into an ad for nosehair clippers after making pulling out nose hair seem like a legitimate life threatening mistake.

I even wonder why it would be so important that it is nose hairs. The same veins? Yeah, but the blood is leaving, if it is the veins being infected there are a shit ton of other things you shouldn't do. Don't blow your nose, because the same thing will go for infected sinuses. Don't fuck up in your mouth, it will get into your brain too. This is a new and strong hypothesis for Alzheimers and parkinsons... I think nose hairs are the slightest of our problems here. Oh and we have ears too.

@StayStrapped2A - You can trim the long ones that escape the nasal cavity but you're 100% correct, plus if you have sensitive skin like me I can't even use electric trimmers as they get too close and cause ingrown hairs, zits, etc, so I just use a rounded nose trimmer scissors to get any escaping or blatantly coming out soon

A co-worker was a nurse and told me to immediately see a doctor. Did that and my doc send me to the hospital. Long story short: after release from hospital and revisiting my doc he told me that I was super lucky.
