As someone who was diagnosed with hypertrophy cardiomyopathy, before finding myself in hospital and suffering from 2 cardiac arrests in 3 days (in hospital), only to then be told my heart (left ventricle) had less than 10% (EFR) and that my only option would be an LVAD or death, i totally understand what he experienced, and what path he could go down. A lot of people don't understand how the heart functions, or the fact that any damage done to the heart does not magically recover. Even with medicine or tablets, any % of the damage done is forever. The only thing you can do is stall, or stabilize things so that more damage is not done. Myocarditis is different in the sense that its pointing to the muscle. But even some cases do not recover. In regards to my story, i wasn't allowed to leave the hospital without a defib vest (Zoll) that i had to wear 24 hours a day, and i wasn't allowed to drive. It was a risk to have a shower because i had to remove the vest. (Im under 35 yrs old). Then 4 months later, i had an LVAD implanted. 9 months after that, i was successfully transplanted. Today, im a few days from a yr post-transplant. All of this happened to me in the space of 2.5 years. And its a journey i wouldn't wish on anyone. Imagine being in a state of being where you're body is constantly telling you that you are dehydrated, but you are limited to fluids (even 800 mil water a day) because your heart is not functioning well enough to move t water around your body so the resul is that you end up fluid overloaded - which then puts more stress on the heart causing more damage. Daily, you are reduced to having ice chips, but you are extremely thirsty. You can't walk more than 4 steps without being out of breath. You can't sleep, eat, or even walk to the bathroom. I lived 9 months with an LVAD, which minimized these symptoms but had me living on a battery. Cardiac arrest is not something little, its not an accident, and its possible that doctors will not find a cause. This is also the case with heart failure. Its very common that doctors do not ever find the cause of the heart failure. And when heart failure begins, there is no recovery. The heart cannot recover from damage. So lets all hope that Bronny never has to experience this. I only hope the young man has a long and happy life, but most of all, a normal life. I hope he never has to experience what ive experienced. its about time that we take more initiative to bring more awareness to the heart, its function, and the concerns as well as what to look for so that we can help prevent others from ever experiencing this. The myth is that its an old age thing. its not. More and more people that suffer from this are young, and very young too.

I have congenital Long QT (my grandfather was actually listed in the original paper describing the disease in the 70's), so as a sports fan and fellow athlete I'm always intrigued and particularly concerned seeing cardiac issues in high level competition. The Damar Hamlin incident, while obvsoiusly scary and undesirable, truly is a landmark moment in my opinion; with such a high profile game being nationally televised, it really thrust cardiac emergencies into the spotlight like never before. CPR is so important and AEDs should be everywhere. It was amazing to see an emergency plan work effectively and for the aftermath to involve so many other organizations reevaluate their emergency plans, and for the public to get a better sense of how to care about these situations. So thankful that Bronny was in an effective space. Thank you, Doc, for the thoughtful discourse you facilitate with these videos

@@ManWho30 As much as I hate LeTurd James, Bronny is different. He is a nice kid whose future was mapped for him by his OVERHYPED Father. All I am saying is that Bronny could die from this if he keeps pushing for the Dream set to him by his Father. What would you rather see? I healthy and alive Bronny who gave up Basketball? Or a Bronny James playing NBA Basketball but only one Cardiac Arrest away from DEATH? Whether he plays or not, his life is set because of his father's generational wealth. Reggie Lewis, Hank Gathers. I don't want to ADD the name of Bronny James on this short list of players who died on the Basketball Court!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yeah, I will keep on hating as long a LeTurd James keeps calling himself as the GOAT. PATHETIC!

What’s odd to me is that this is the second occurrence of cardiac arrest in a USC basketball player within the last year, I do think the NCAA should conduct an investigation on what USC Men’s Basketball is doing for conditioning, drills, etc to see if maybe it’s too strenuous on some of the athletes.

This situation is a heavy reminder that everyone should take a certified cpr course because what if you're in a situation with a friend, family, or stranger or just you and alone with another where there is no medical team on site. Then its on you to keep the person alive while the ambulence and emts get there. If you don't know cpr then you could fail to save that persons life when a few hours of time to learn and be knowledgeable could save them. Freak stuff can happen to any person of any health anywhere so we all gotten make sure to be prepared for those around us. 90% of those who suffer cardiac arrest die I saw online since either no one is there for them, or no one knows how to do cpr correctly, or they don't recover, so its vital everyone learns to save these ppls lives. I am going to make sure that I research local cpr classes and enter in one to make sure im educated enough because shit like this is scary and humbling of our mortality. I hope he recovers, and this does not pose a long term issue for him.
