I remember when the Clint Malarchuk injury happened. Thankfully he's alive. Scariest injury I've seen in sports. He came out with his own line of neckguards after. A very close second happened in a game I was playing in. I was a goalie and after the whistle in our end, in front of the net one of our defensemen pushed a player on the other team. The player on the other team fell and hit their head on the ice. The guy wasn't wearing his chin strap so his actual head hit the ice cause his helmet came part of the way off. I'll never forget looking down and seeing a pool of blood coming out of his ear. He was rushed to the hospital and I never saw him play again on that specific team.
Injuries like these really show just how important the trainers and medical staff are. Zednik has said himself that the trainer, who had some military medical background, saved his like by pinching the artery that was cut. Said it was hanging by a thread.
@AD-df5tm3 жыл бұрын
I think you are confusing two different stories there. It was the Clint Malarchuk incident where the trainer was a former Vietnam vet (he was a combat engineer not a medical member) and it's said that he reached into Malarchuk's neck to pinch off his jugular but that is just an urban legend. He didn't actually do that. He almost certainly did save Malarchuk's life getting to him so quickly and getting him off the ice though.

Jesus, I had completely forgotten about Zednik's injury. "Fun" fact about the incident: Zednik's life was saved by a fan who happened to be a doctor. The guy jumped down from the stands and immediately clamped down on his artery. Zednik was actually conscious enough to ask him if he could loosen his clamp as it was "too tight". The doctor answered "no" and the rest is history.

Being a basically brand new gun, the recoil spring is under a butt load of tension, and my wrench slipped off the bushing before I could get it turned into the groove. That sucker flew directly back at me and hit my right eyebrow basically exactly where Staal got hit. It hurt so bad, I thought my eye socket shattered. Would be super interesting to hear your take on guys with recurring concussion issues. Contrasting Crosby, who has come back fine (and maybe better) despite his career looking over (Patrice Bergeron's early-season concussion might also qualify) with someone like a Marc Savard. I assume it's already on the list, but comparing Rich Peverly's cardiac incident with Fischer's would be interesting. Johnny Boychuk almost lost his eye this season from a skate blade, that was gruesome. Maybe even dissecting the fact that Gregory Campbell played a shift of a penalty kill on a literal broken leg, or Bergeron played in the 2013 Cup finals with a punctured lung. In short, hockey players are dumb and reckless when it comes to their own health, postseason injury reports often read like they went to an actual war.

I’ll never forget that look. He put a towel over my head to hide my injuries. The last thing I remember is him and Keith Primeau helping me to my feet and escorting me off the ice to the dressing room.” -Draper, who blacked out on his way off the ice, regained consciousness in the locker room and felt the excruciating pain for the first time. Then he blacked out again. “The next time I came to, I sat up and the pain was gone. I didn’t know it, but I was on some serious painkillers. Best way I can explain a defibrillator: It's the human heart equivalent of the IT axim known best as, "have you tried turning it off and on again?" The defibrillator essentially turns the heart off, and a normal(ish) heart will immediately turn itself back on. This is also why not all heart rhythms can be shocked. Think, can you reset a computer that isn't even on? Same is true for a heart. Resetting it doesn't work if the problem is that the heart doesn't even "turn on" (so to speak) or beat.

The hit on Paul Kariya from Scott Stevens and how he was able to come back in the same game would be awesome to talk about

Johnny Boychuk getting his eye cut last year (he ended up retiring), Erik Karlsson getting his achilles cut (yikes!!) Any Tom Wilson hit recipient.

One injury that shock me when I saw it happen on live tv was the hit on Pacioretty by Chara in 2011. Such a scary one. Pacioretty never was really the same after that...

What was the difference in his game before and after? He was still a legitimate scoring threat for the next decade.
