In the process of tearing up linoleum flooring a few years ago, I somehow got a huge wooden splinter embedded under the fingernail of my pointer finger. It was so long it went vertically through the center of my nail all the way to the bottom. My husband tried to remove it but it broke off just at the top where he couldn't access it anymore. I didn't have time to stop and go to the doctor, so I wrapped it up, tried to keep it clean, and let it work its way out over time while I kept working (we were remodeling our house). It took a month before it finally pushed out enough that I could grab it with tweezers and remove it. It was really painful, and a huge relief when I finally got it out of there.

If the splinter is hard to remove, put a piece of raw bacon on it and wrap it in gauze, the next day you will find the splinter on the bacon or the wrap. And it will also pull the bits and pieces out of the area.

You should soak the area with warm epsom salt for a minute or so before removing if it has started to swell. I think the salt cause the splinter to shrink slighty. Sometimes just the back pressure will shoot it nearly out. Personal experience. Your's may vary.

I worked at Ashley Furniture for 2 years. Had a coworker that had gotten a splinter down to the bone in his finger a few years back. Doctor's couldn't remove it, so they tried a weird method of forcing it out over time. They said if it didn't work, they would have to amputate his finger. Splinters are deadly, my friends. Be careful.

I was hanging drywall and I got a splinter, slightly bigger than this, and at an angle where it went deeper into me and it was already deep, could hardly tell it was splinter from looking at it. No tweezers, but every drywaller has a utility knife. Dug that SOB out of my hand and it was one of the best things I've ever felt, was such a relief lol. It hurt digging it out but it had to be done.

I'm in construction and get splinters on a regular basis. I take my utility knife out, to open the skin just a little on the side of the splinter. I then put the flat of the blade under the end of the splinter, and pinch the splinter between the blade and my thumb and pull it out.

My mother's technique has stood me in good stead raising two boys. First, if it's deep, soak in hot water to open up the skin. Use a sewing pin to open up the end a bit if it's not sticking out. Then when you can get a good grip go in with the tweezers.

FWIW, most pharmacies will give you a couple of glucose meter lancets for free. These have a tip that is sharpened on a slant, making them a micro-scalpel. They are also completely sterile. (I would have gently slid one along the skin above the splinter to give more access.) I've used these for *YEARS* and always have a half-dozen or so in my first aid kits.

once I got a splinter stuck in me, thought it fell out but it just got deeper in the skin. didn't realize until I brush over it with something, by then callous had grown over, so instead of tweezers, I just use clippers to remove the callous and splinter all at once. hurt a little but the short pain relieved me greatly.

I had a thorn in my foot not that long ago. It was so painful and so small. I couldn't even tell for a few days if there was even anything in there, but the pain assured me that there must be. After getting upset and digging at the pain with some clippers, which probably was a bad idea. I was finally able to push on the surrounding area and a nice little thorn just popped right out. The pain was finally gone and it no longer hurt to walk.

I had to have surgery to get a splinter removed from my hand when I was kid. My cousin and I were playing and hopped over an old wooden redwood fence because our cousins live next door that was our shortcut as we lived in a double lot and we were in the back of the property. Anyway when I hopped down from the fence my hand hit the top of it while I was coming down it didn't hurt very much but when I looked at it there was about a 2-inch chunk of wood protruding from the palm of my hand below my little finger. We pulled out the trunk but wasn't sure if we had gotten it all. My parents decided to wait overnight and if it was still bothering me in the morning we would go get it checked out further. Not sure how they figured it out it was would I don't know if it showed up on an X-ray but it turns out the rest of the splinter had actually gone in between the knuckle joint of my little finger there was another inch and a half splinter inside my hand. I don't remember how old I was but I do remember I took the splinter for show and tell at school after it was removed. To this day still can't straighten this finger out fully from the damage they did removing the splinter.

I had a glass splinter once and it was on my right hand thumb when you look top down hand flat on top over a surface on the left/bottom side kinda going into more of the palm side but still in between the soft top side a little above the last knuckle going from the tip of my thumb into the hand following the thumbs direction into connection with the hand and getting that out without being able to use the dominant hand and dull tweezer and the splinter being all the way under couple layers of skin so I had to break the/rip/tear/cut open the layers to get to the level then a bit more for them being dull tweezers and pushing the glass splinter back more while having done that it took about 20 mins because I was trying to do as much as I could to not cause more damage but still get it out as soon as I could then went right back to work after using some rubbing alcohol and threw a butterfly band aid since it was basically on the knuckle and the movements from the thumb and 30 to an hour later swapped out the band aid for same style just new one and cleaned off and extra of anything still there before applying new one

Love your video, but not for what you might think. It was the comment about not wearing gloves and that most ppl don't have sterile gloves to pull out at will. This other guy just came out so judgemental because of no gloves or proper tools. Reality is that most ppl try to fix themselves before paying at that money at the doc. Heck some would rather die trying than pay those. It's only gonna get worse...price of medical care is just sky rocketing and insurance pays less and less...fact...
