Most of the time any tissue (bones, organs, flesh) and any internal stuff (replacement joints and screws) are considered biohazards unless the hospital is pushed and the papers signed before surgery/ER visit are typically designed to prevent you from having any legal right to the parts as well as the hospital having no legal responsibility to save your life (in case of lose of life during treatment to avoid civil lawsuits from the family). Also common with dentists but not enforced as much. My father couldn't keep his solid gold molar because it was removed from his mouth making it a biohazard. Meanwhile my mother was allowed to keep her gallbladder after it was removed because the doctor didn't care to enforce the policy.

My great grandfather has his leg amputated two weeks before his death. His last wish was to be buried with his leg. So that’s what happened.

Imagine how tragic it would be to visit your right hands grave. "We had good times mate, I miss you"

I assumed they'd donate them to science or be used as examples for med students learning about diseases or anatomy. Kind of like how we'd dissected frogs in high school. I don't know if having med students dissect a human amputated limb would be helpful or not education wise but I always assumed that's what they did with the amputated limbs.
