A doctor was able to stop crippling gout that haunted him for years within a matter of weeks. The painful flare-ups vanished quickly and never returned.
What changed for Dr. Richard Schmidt? He began focusing on different protein sources than he was used to. While he never ate heavily processed junk food, his diet did feature what he considered to be healthy sources of protein such as fish and lean meats.
He decided to eliminate them after discovering research showing their ties to inflammatory gout attacks. He now focuses exclusively on plant-based protein sources and has never looked back.
It is a remarkable turnaround for someone who once needed a wheelchair because the gout flare-ups had become so extreme.
Dr. Schmidt is a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist based in Mountain View, Calif.

THIS is the episode I’ve been waiting for! Thank you so much! I feel like I’ve been able to keep my gout flare ups away with WFPB eating and get frustrated with people who insist that dietary changes won’t help you after you’ve been diagnosed.

Like plant based docs McDougall and Klapper say..."it's the food!" This doc's story backs it up again!

I’m late catching up with this particular episode, but I wanted to say that I also beat gout by switching to a plant-based diet. My doctor was skeptical when I said I wanted to stop taking the medication, so I made a bet with her. “I’m going to stop taking it; test my uric acid again in 3 months and then let’s talk.” Now she understands! That was about 3 years ago now.

I need to stop listening to podcasts: "I'm a full time doctor, I do aerobic exercises six times a week, I grow all my own food in my own orchard and drink wine from my winery" and here I am feeling accomplished I folded laundry sitting on my kitchen table for two days.

Nothing like having a whole bunch of people helping to allow one to do that - like folks doing the laundry for him. ;)

Life-limiting asthma, gout, Crone’s, cealiac, arthritis, wasn’t able to have kids, nasty migraines with vomiting, months of horrendous inflammation in hip and knee joints, IBS - and on loads of meds; dozens of medical practitioners later and NOT ONE has suggested, let alone recommended, going WFPB!

Can’t trust allopathic medicine anymore. I’m 67 been vegan for 9 years. Past 3 mostly Whole Foods. Reversed a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, no more asthma, high energy and lost weight. I was late to the game, thinking I was eating pretty healthy before that. Just like him.. “clean foods”. It’s all bs by the money making industries.

I’ve had a similar experience with asthma. My puffers expired 15 years ago and were never replaced. WFPB worked for me as well.

I'm a vegan physical therapist... started with gout at 49....I quickly made the connection with alcohol.... always happened in vacation, dehydration, and for me... sugar. It's the worst. Similar to the doctor, I thought I had an orthopedic problem at first, then the light bulb moment, feeling stupid, duh, gout. It's all about the inflammation folks! Great discussion!

Inspiring but I’d really like a few more details. Specifically, what exactly did he eat in the first three days after he arrived home that allowed him to rise from his wheelchair? And how about what he ate in that first month that alleviated his gout so well?

For me, the elephant in the room, which was finally addressed, was the potential role of alcohol on increasing the likelihood of gout attacks. I wish Dr. Schmidt had proceeded with an elimination diet, starting with eliminating alcohol 100%, especially beer.

Sure alcohol is a big deal. However, you should not underestimate the healing benefits of eating (mostly) plants.

I had the same knee thing happen and even had to buy a cane as my knee quit working and had an MRI and they said I had a cartilage issue when I had never had one before. And like this doctor googling studies, I did/do the same.

Feeling your best with gout is all about smart food choices! Power your body with fresh vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains for 80% of your daily calories. Lean protein sources like chicken, fish, and occasional red meat make up 10%, while healthy fats from dairy, eggs, and avocados fill out the rest. Stay hydrated with water, tea, and coffee, and ditch processed foods in favor of fresh ingredients. Cooking methods like boiling, baking, and grilling keep things healthy, and extra virgin olive oil adds flavor without the downsides. Finally, I personally supplement my gout diet with Nutrigout which helps support uric acid. Enjoy delicious, nutritious meals that support your well-being!

Enjoyed this, but Chuck never let him discuss how by changing his diet he saw the results in real time. It was touched on, but Dr Schmidt never dived into his actual healing. Owning one's own winery, I wonder if that had anything to do with saying drinking red wine is OK.
