I see where you're coming from. To me though, it felt like there was a LOT of fan service in the end. They just went on and on and on, showing different parts of the hotel. I don't watch movie trailers, so I didn't know what was coming. They were like, "Hey, remember this room?" "Hey, remember the door with the axe damage?", etc. The only reason it bothered me is because it felt like the movie took a "time out" to do this. Nothing was happening at this time other than they were waiting for Rose to show up. It didn't make sense to me that Ewan McGregor's character would go walking around like that in the context of the story. It was the only part of the movie (other than baseball boy's murder scene, which I hated) that I didn't care for but it didn't ruin the movie for me or anything, I just felt it was unnecessary (much like the way they portrayed baseball boy's murder scene).

I think that this movie is extremely overrated. Hear me out. I feel like I've gone into the twilight zone just seeing all of these positive comments. It has decent-high scores on review websites, and I would certainly call it worse than Midsommar (watch it if you haven't, my pick for best horror of 2019). This movie is about Shining vampires. The worst thing about this movie is what it does every 15 minutes. The first scene, the bathtub girl scenes, the theater scene, the baseball player scene, the scene where they're at the park on the bench, the scene where he shows up at the house and the father is defensive, the scene where they're casually driving to the forest together, etc, etc. Literally, just about every 15 minutes (sometimes as little as 5 minutes) references kidnapping, torturing, and/or murdering @hildren. This is the most glaring problem, and it leaves a bad taste in the mouth if you catch it. It might take a few watch throughs to notice, but it is extremely strange. In addition to this however. The writers (or writer) seem to not understand genre in general. It's understandable that the scenes I listed can be seen as scary to some, but it really comes off more as a sci-fi adventure until they get to the hotel. The horror elements are weak at best, and in bad taste at worst. It's to the point where I don't think you could be truly scared unless you are a child (rated R movie), or a parent. I just watched it for the first time, and I do not think it will have any kind of lasting impact on me in the future.

@@skeletonking2352 The thing is, why call it a horror movie ? I just watched it and thought it was a terrific movie, though I couldn't quite identify the genre, and it's fine. It has horror elements to it, while keeping that investigation/mystery theme going and it's great and engaging. Who cares if it doesn't stick to what a horror film should or shouldn't be, as long as it's enjoyable and well made ?! It's most definitely not a horror movie, just like Shining wasn't (didn't even jump - which I did on this one), and even less overrated. The acting is great, the characters are great, the story is great. What's there to complain about ?

@@WhoAmI-tr5me Yes, I absolutely agree that it shouldn't be called a horror movie. Maybe mystery? I don't even know about that though. There's a way to describe this kind of movie however. It doesn't understand genre, or at least the creators of this movie don't understand which genre it's supposed to be. It should probably be classified as a science-fiction action adventure, with mystery elements, and minor horror elements. I don't think that the genre thing is a criticism though just by itself. The real problems here are the weak villains, the inability to suspend disbelief (partially a genre problem), and the gratuitous actions (especially coming from the villains). One thing I have seen a lot in the good reviews is the mentioning of the villains, and especially their motives. Their motives for doing evil are just about as weak as it could possibly ever get. It is implied that they do evil just to live a long time. They signed themselves up to have to do this evil thing, and just for immortality. Even if they didn't all sign themselves up for it, they're still only doing it in order to survive, which isn't much of a better motivation to do evil, and either motive is really easy to find fault in. A good villain has motives that are either not easy to find fault in, as in they're not objectively evil, and mediocre-alright villains are villains on a path of revenge, or trying to right wrongs. I don't want to go over the inability to suspend disbelief because that may be different for you, and I can't dispute that. My problem with this lies mostly with the fact that the more grounded heroes perspective seems set in reality, whereas the villains have nothing about them that seems set in reality about their lifestyles. The violence serves no purpose other than to make you think "wow these guys are EVIL". No nuance in perspective to whether or not they could be the good guys is even allowed. I just want you to open your mind for a second and consider the following. Do you think that this movie could have gotten good reviews at least partially because people will rate anything with Stephen King's name on it highly (especially in recent years). Now I wouldn't say that the new IT movie was bad by any stretch, and I even really liked it. Probably like a 7-8/10, but I see a lot of people who just love everything by him. Most of his books are even pretty damn good, but I wouldn't say all of them are, and I would never give a movie (or book) bonus points just for coming from SK. He is still capable of making shit, just like the rest of us, and I have even seen some of the worst things from him.

Regardless of the fame of The Shining, both are completely different animals. Kubrick's movie is about experimenting with cinematography, colors, camera angles, sound and how the characters interact with the environment about them in order to create a haunting story with multivariate possibilities of interpretation. Dr. Sleep is an X-Men movie without the X-Men. Not saying it was bad, just, for me, meh, like all King has produced in several decades now. Hill House was a good series up to halfway through. The rest was predictable garbage. Just like, for me, this movie was more Kubrick fan service than it should be for its own good.

I'm a huge wuss and legitimately hate horror films purely because of the jump scares, but I recently watched both Bly Manor and Hill House and I felt so connected and inspired by the characters that I didn't need to cover my eyes or ears once. I felt horrified by what was happening to the characters, but I wasn't scared myself.

"The scariest things are things that are simply implied." The reason this is, is because we tend to conjure the worst possible scenario. Our own mind can be our own worst enemy. Paranoia....Fear of the unknown is the most powerful fear-it's why people fear DEATH. Because we don't know what happens the moment the heart stops pumping. We don't know where the mind goes we don't know what happens next. It's why most horror movies lose their luster when the monster is shown. When a paranormal film shows the monster, ok sure scary whatever. But when it doesn't? It feels all the more real and possible. THIS is why the first Paranormal Activity is so effective. Two adults, two ADULTS terrorized by something they cannot see or control. THAT is scarier than any typical jump scare fest. After all with a jump scare, you often aren't reacting to what's on screen, but the loud noise you just heard. You're able to brush that off easily. But a PROPER scare is one that will *BURN INTO YOUR BRAIN AND IT'S WHAT YOU'LL THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU LOOK OUTSIDE AT NIGHT.*

Depends on the film/show, but i agree that's often the case...like i found the first 7 episodes of Stranger Things terrifying, and then i saw the monster and it was suddenly nowhere near as scary anymore (and the old Stephen King IT TV mini series is a famous example of seeing the monster ruining the scare). Yet, as Nicole mentioned above, seeing the monster in The Thing only amplified the scare.
@gojochillmode839

More horror movies should do this, the fear of the unknown. Paranoia is a strong element that should be used more instead of cheap jumpscares, some horror movies use that element and as a result they are more memorable.

@@punkybubblegum Personal preference imo. I don't think anything actually "scares" me when it comes to movies, but I love monsters - so I'm always happy to see "the monster". There are definitely people who feel the opposite.

@@gojochillmode839 "Paranoia is a strong element that should be used more instead of cheap jumpscares" - there's a reason many consider TV the superior mode these days (which certainly wasn't the case in the 80s-00s)...as Scorsese says (and RLM said at least a year ago) movies (from Hollywood) nowadays are almost amusement rides, instead of stories. Not just in horror, but perhaps even worse in the 'super hero movie'.

Ewan MacGregor has a way, usually, of choosing good roles to play, even if the movie itself isn't the greatest. Like, in the Star Wars prequels, he does the best job playing the most compelling character in the trilogy, with the best acting and has made the character his own so effectively he has now essentially become this generation's Obi-Wan Kenobi. And, I don't think I need to say anything about Trainspotting lol or any of his other films. He's just an all-around great actor and there probably isn't a movie I wouldn't go see if I notice he's in it. 👍

Sam Armstrong Everybody’s shit in Star Wars, so I’m gonna give them all a pass. I won’t give Lucas one though. Anyone who can make all those great actors appear stiff & wooden (don’t get me started on the dialogue. It’s coarse & rough & irritating) needs to take a hard look at how they are directing & attempt to make some serious changes. Hell, ask the cinematographer for help 🤣

Wow lol I'm glad I was able to provide such a suitable forum for people to talk trash, whine and complain within underneath my comment! It's actually a really effective method of determining who has something intelligent to add to a discussion, and who just adds negativity because they apparently have absolutely nothing better to do with their time than rant and spread their toxic opinions to as many other people as possible, so I suppose I should be at least somewhat grateful. Anyway, I've turned my comment response notifications off, so say whatever you want lol It's not as if I will ever be back here again anyway to see it. Knock yourselves out, man! 😂🖕
