With the release of Doctor Sleep taking us back to the world of The Shining I thought that it was the perfect time to break down the big villain of the piece Rose The Hat and her group of followers: The True Knot.
As chosen by you we’re going to be covering what we know about the group, their abilities and the differences in their depiction from the book and film adaptation.
Now there will be heavy spoilers here so if you haven’t had a chance to check out the movie yet and don’t want anything ruined then I highly recommend that you turn off now.
With that out the way I just wanna give a huge thank you for clicking this video, now let’s get into our breakdown of Rose The Hat and The True Knot!
The True Knot
Ok so the film Doctor Sleep actually spans a great distance of time, beginning just after the events of the Shining in the early 1980s and running all the way up to modern-day. Whilst we primarily focus on Danny Torrence, a strong psychic, there also exists The True Knot, who we also witness operating from 1980 to the present.
We watch as Danny grows older, his life torn apart by Alcoholism whilst the True Knot remain ageless due to the fact that they are able to take the life force, or as they call it ‘steam’ from psychics. The group are basically vampires that live a nomadic lifestyle, moving from state to state in a convoy, preying on the weak and unsuspecting. Because of this, they have attained a certain kind of immortality that keeps them immune to most natural causes though they are able to be killed through more conventional methods.
What Doctor Sleep boils down to and portrays in both it’s protagonist Danny and the antagonist the True Knot is a battle with addiction. Danny, similar to his father is an alcoholic that is neglectful, less caring of others and because of this it leads to the death of an infant after it’s mother overdoses. Danny is really torn apart by this and the guilt that he feels over this act causes him to up sticks and start a new life where he will not allow his demons to take over him.
rose the hat true not explained
A Battle With Addiction
Mirroring this, The True Knot is addicted to steam but unlike Danny, they do not take any responsibility for the pain that they inflict and thus they operate almost with a sense of glee, too causing the deaths of children but reveling it instead of disgust. This is the main conflict of Doctor Sleep and the entire storyline is about Danny trying to protect a child for succumbing to the addiction of others that do not possess the mortality that he does.
There is a pivotal moment in Doctor Sleep for both characters in which they have the choice between their addiction, for Danny it is when he returns to the Overlook Hotel and comes face to face with his father in the Gold Room. Danny is offered a drink and he turns it down, thus putting his demons to rest and going on to do the right thing that has an overall positive outcome.
Juxtaposing this, after the True Knot is wiped out, just leaving Rose by herself, she has the option to let Abra go but her greed and craving for Steam get the better of her and this ultimately leads to her downfall.
The True Knot Mantra
The True Knot themselves are fascinating and they have a long, storied history and way of life that makes them one of the most unique horror creations in all of Stephen King’s back catalogue.
When describing themselves during one of their many rituals throughout the work they state:
‘We are the True Knot and we endure. We are the chosen ones. We are the fortunate ones. What is tied cannot be untied. Here is a woman, will she join us? Will she tie her life to our life? ‘

They sound like the Sleepwalkers from his 1992 movie. There was never a book on this as he wrote it for the movie only like he did for Rose Red. However, the Sleepwalkers were cat like vampires in order to stay young had to suck the life out of young virgins. Just my thoughts.

Addiction was certainly a huge theme in Doctor Sleep, but my interpretation is that it’s really about death, and how death makes us human. Rose the Hat says to Abra “I think the only difference between you and me is time”. She also says to her “You’d be surprised what you do, for more time”. The True Knot believe they are blessed because they “endure”, but in fact they are cursed. Their fear of death makes them willing to do the most atrocious things one can do. They live in constant fear that they won’t have enough steam one day. When they die, they simply vaporize in agony, leaving behind their clothes, as if they were never there. But when the humans at the hospice die, or Danny for that matter, they die peacefully, and it’s made very clear to us that “we go on”. Accepting death allows them to die happily and go on. Not accepting death allows the True Knot more time on Earth, but it robs them of everything that makes life meaningful and their deaths are brutal, terrifying, and it’s heavily implied that they simply cease to exist afterwards.

Yes, that was a tough role to get right because you need a- a beautiful woman b- who could still seem wicked evil c- who looked good wearing a top hat and d- who you'd look at, knowing she was pure evil, and still consider hooking up with her. I think Snakebite Andi was perfect as well.

I don’t know what fans you’ve been talking to but I’m a fan of both and thought this film did justice to neither of them. The whole final third of the film deviated heavily from the way the story goes in the book while ruining a lot of the mystique Kubrick incorporated into his adaptation.

As a fan of Kubrick's "The Shining" I hate it when they use nostalgia to hide the movie's "suckyness"(that's a word). There's nothing wrong with going back or reviving/copying kubrick style of directing but it has to make sense why you're doing it... I will give my example... When Rose the Hat was walking in the hotel she saw the "Elevator with blood coming out" then she smiles and next scene... Like what the fuck was that??? It's like the director pulling his penis out and slap it to our face and saying "OHH YOU LIKE THE SHINING HUH... HERE'S A KUBRICK SHOT, YOU LIKE THAT SCENE RIGHT? REMEMBER THAT SCENE?"

Watched Dr. Sleep today and being a Stephen King fan. It was amazing!! I loved how the movie turned out! The baseball boy's death was very cruel and disturbing I'm not gonna lie. But watching all of True Knot die was very satisfying especially Crow Daddy. I also love how Rose the Hat died I prefer this death over the book. Danny releasing all the spirits of the Outlook and having them swarm her eating her alive. This goes to show that the Outlook is the most corrupt and evil place not even Rose the hat could handle those spirits. I wish all of True Knot would have died to those ghosts.

That part was brutal. Not many films will show a detailed scene of a child being tortured & eaten alive for several minutes. Stomach-churning. I do agree that Dr. Sleep would make a great series, especially since not only is there so much history with these steam-stealing monsters going back to ancient societies, but there's also more out there in modern day even though this group was defeated. And lots of other psychics with various powers, and ghosts and hauntings... It's a big world with a lot of storytelling potential.

My favorite part of the movie was the crazy psychic battles between the two protagonists and Rose. Watching them both terrorize her near the end of the film was so bittersweet. Finally she feels the same fear and agony she had been violently forcing on children for so many years. My only real complaint - well, it’s not really even a complaint - was the baseball boy scene. Call me “soft” if you want, but that scene almost made me look away. I rarely get scared during films, but that whole scene left my heart pounding in my chest. @@sebastiancalzada4773 Yea apparently the kid went all out and made it so uncomfortable they didnt use a lot of the footage. That scene is directly from the book however. He did exactly what was put in kings book. Without that scene the way it was done it wouldnt give you the same sense of dread or hate that this scene sparks. I think Jacob did one hell of a job! They said in another spot that once they said cut he just popped up high fived his dad and went and get something to eat from the food cart. No trauma at all just doing his job. Kid deserves some award for that though it was very believeable. Only makes you wonder how far he really took it and if it will make it into a directors cut.

@@heavyspoilers That was directly from the king novel. Even the lines Jocob says are exactly what is said in the book. Like I said in another post he went the extra mile so far they didnt show everything he put out. Only makes you wonder how next level acting he took it and if anyone will ever see just how much he put into such a short scene. Regardless he took it made it very believable and that scene set the tone for everyone to really really REALLY hate the true knot for who they are. Kid naied it and deserves some sort of award imo.

TWO EASTER EGGS FOUND: 1/im thinking that rose's hat has powers that protect her...if you watch the film and watch her reaction when she does not have it on, she grabs it quickly as if she does not want to be separated from it...when she dies as the ghosts are feeding on her, as they finish her, it switches to a shot of her hat on the stairs...i think she protected herself with the hat, and when they attacked her it got knocked off and she was vulnerable....SECOND EASTER EGG FOUND is a reference to "It" while they are feeding on someone, their eyes shine with a dot, also seen in Pennywise as he feeds

Anyone else feel that the true knot were 'the cabal ' one of the characters even said ' they're very very rich and have so many connections, how can we possibly bring them down ' . The baseball boy scene (of which has no doubt scarred me for life💔) seems to be a reference to the adrenochrome 'the cabal ' consume 😱 Very good film. In the book there were way more than 6 True Knot members the ones in the movies were just the top ones. They weren’t addicted to steam but needed it to stay young and live, & Barry was not the first person with measles that passed it around. They all got it from baseball boy steam and thought Abra would be the cure. Some of the members just died from it more quickly than others but they were all doomed. Also the girl that Danny abandoned (Deenie) didn’t overdose, she killed herself after her brother killed her son. The True Knot were very interesting and I wasn’t satisfied with the film adaptation of them for the most part.

The only real weak spot for me with this movie was the character of Snakebite Andi. She's introduced as a vigilante going after child predators but then she's kidnapped and offered a deal to join the Kid Killing Gang. The bad guys are literally antithesis to her & her mission. "Hey, we saw you use your powers to take down men who are preying on children. Wanna join us in hunting down, torturing & eating kids for all eternity?" And the draw that Rose uses to get Andi to agree is basically telling her that it's great because she'll stay 15, fresh & ageless forever, because it sucks when gravity starts wearing on a woman's looks? WHY would Andi want to be 15 forever? I don't know of a single 15-year-old that would want to be stuck in that awkward pre-adult phase for eternity, let alone want it so bad that they'd want to spend their immortality luring kids to their death for it (what a fun life!). And then once Andi joins them she just goes full gun-ho cartoon villain with no hesitance or moral qualms about what they do, and later in her death scene just starts going off about how much she hates men. What?? I haven't read the book to know about her original character, but for sure the movie version is terribly fleshed-out and makes no sense. Edited to add: I also think it's dorky that they call the life energy they steal "steam". I know it's from the books, but it's still funny and takes me out of it a bit. Doesn't sounds very mystical or scary. "They're gonna steal your steam!" Nooooo not my steam! Ha ha. Overall, solid movie though. Ewan especially did a great job and the story had a lot of real heart & emotion, which I always appreciate particularly in horror, which can oftentimes ring very hollow if they don't make you feel for the characters & what they're being put through.
