Came here to see any and all discourse around what I am dubbing #Westworldgate. For context: the Big Sandwich feed version of this episode DOES NOT feature the world famous "Westworld" interruption (or addition, as some may see it) that THE Mr. Sunday Movies is quite popular and known for doing during the regular What We Reading, What We Gonna Read segment. Where as, on this youtube version (presumably a version featuring ad reads, I wouldn't know since I transcended to a higher state of being, well over a year ago, when I kowtowed to Big Sandwich and Big Sandwich's corporate interests and signed up for a reasonable $9 a month- that includes ad free versions of the Weekly Planet podcast and James' less successful [but superior] podcast Suggestible that he does with his wife Claire Tonti [incredible host of the "TONTS" podcast], early access to videos/Caravan of Garbage episodes, and extra podcasts and commentaries exclusive to Big Sandwich) there is a furtive delivery of "Westworld?" contained in it's usual spot at the end of the intro at approximately 01:20:38 of this video. Now, I'm no big city lawyer man person, but it would seem to me that one of two scenarios could have transpired to have created such a discrepancy of Westworld proportions: 1) On the original recording, James was merely so gassed by the time the end of the Doctor Strange review rolled around that he had unintentionally omitted his famous interruption (OR addition!) and Collings, being the hero that he most certainly is, took it upon himself to procure and splice in a previously Westworld'd intro for the normie feed version (no offense intended, I have many friends who are normies) and left the purer Big Sandwich feed version as recorded and Westworldless. Or 2) THERE IS A CONSPIRACY AFOOT!!! I refuse to blame Collings for this error or omission, because honestly how does he do it folks? Ultimately, what I'm saying is this is the biggest scandal or event to happen in at least the last 5 years and should be regarded as such amongst the fanbase and general public. Thank You. p.s. James loses all steam by the end of the Doctor Strange review, continuing through the end of the podcast and yet is no less punchy and honestly I'm here for it. EDIT: Upon closer inspection of the KZbin version I find that the non-Westworld'd intro also appears at 01:19:45 which leads into the extra thought about Doctor Strange and the implications of the future of the MCU and also a moment of "Dog Time" which directly leads into a replaying of the theme, which now MIRACULOUSLY features the fan favorite Westworld interruption (addition, whatever). This replaying of the Westworld'd theme is not featured in the paid feed and instead goes straight from "Dog Time" to James enthusiastically saying "Wow, we're back." I have no idea of what conclusions should be drawn from this omission other than to say my world view is now shattered and we all have some soul searching to do in whether we should support a show with such fluctuant production value. I'll probably just keep paying the $9 a month though, because like... I have to open another tab to cancel it and honestly.... I just can't be bothered.

I felt that Wanda was definitely corrupted by the Darkhold. Why would she give up her family at the end of Wandavision for a single town, then turn around and kill so many people to get them back? At the end when she saw the kids scared of her and the other her, she snapped out of it and pulled away from the Darkhold’s influence long enough to destroy it.

One thing that disappointed me about Doctor Strange 2 was that I really thought that a big revelation of the story would be that Strange did see 2 outcomes where they beat Thanos, but he deliberately sacrificed Stark instead of himself. I wasn’t totally convinced about Superior Iron Man showing up, but I really thought that it would have been interesting to have Strange go to a universe where the opposite happened and Iron Man is alive because of Doctor Strange’s sacrifice. I legitimately thought that’s where the story was going until the Illuminati scene, and they instead went with the plot that involves the Darkhold. I think maybe the thing that disappointed me temporarily about this movie is that it’s much more self-contained than everybody had hoped. We’re expecting every movie to be an Endgame-level crossover event, but this movie was very much like a Doctor Strange comic book arc. I was looking for more wrap up from Wandavision, No Way Home, Loki and Endgame, and some answers about what was to come with Fantastic Four and Mutants, but by the end of this it’s really just been another adventure in the MCU, which we ought to be fine with. Maybe the ending did a bit of a disservice to Wanda’s story with everybody seeming to move on just like everybody else seemed to do when Vision died, which was really one of Wanda’s points in Wandavision.

When Dr. Strange says "Didn't you guys chart in the 60s?" I took that as him referring to the nickname of The Beatles which was "The Fab Four". I don't think it has anything to do with the MCU F4 having been active in the past like Hank Pym was or anything.

My favorite thing about Dr. Strange is that he is transgressive with the rules of magic. He reads the Darkhold, he sells his soul, he does blood magic. In the Hickman New Avengers he summons an Elder God from the forbidden book to destroy another world. (The Illuminati stop him.) That's what I love about the character. He does the weird evil stuff. They kept that and made it his core trait through all his variants. I love that. That's the essence of the character and they got it.

~57:20 Doing my best to say this without spoiling the movie... I think that casting was deliberately done explicitly to get fans to shut up about that casting so when the MCU producers inevitably recast that role for their "proper" MCU movie debut, they can tell fans that they already got their fan-casting out of the way and the fans can be a bit less disappointed.

I wasn’t disappointed that Wanda was the villain - that’s exactly what I wanted, esp after WandaVision. I was disappointed that she was such a one-dimensional villain. I guess these movies need a clear-cut good guy-bad guy dynamic, but I think her arc deserved more nuance and tragedy rather than just, mwahahah I’m a bad guy gimme the teenager to murder hahahah!
@Malky5279
@Malky5279 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it wasn't one dimensional but she wasn't just a bad guy. She only ever wanted to be with her kids. I still found that a bit disappointing because it seemed to me that the whole point of Wandavision was that Wanda was dealing with all the grief and loss in her life, her parents, her brother and Vision. Within that imaginary world she created for herself she creates two children who she also loses at the end but she did it voluntarily because she knew the harm she was causing. For her then to go on a killing spree to get a version of these children back seemed to me negate that character development. Now maybe it's explainable because the magic book she was reading corrupts people and it fed her latest loss and gave her a way to get her children back but it felt a bit cheap to spend so much time investing in a character to almost reset them because the plot needs her to be the bad guy now. It would also have made more sense to me if she was looking for a multiverse where her kids are but have lost their mother which surely must exist. Charging into one where their is a version of Wandavision just seemed all kinds of crazy.

I saw Dr. Strange in IMAX 3D and **HOLY HELL** this is a movie you WANT to see in 3D. The combat uses a lot of spirals and fractals and spinning/twisting/turning camera angles that were all enhanced quite a bit by the extra depth, scale, size, and perspective that 3D brings. I was surprised that it was post-converted and not filmed directly for it because it looked like they had clearly planned out all the shots with 3D in mind. I agree that a good post-conversion can be fine, so long as they PLAN for how the shots are meant to be after 3D is applied, but trust me, Dr. Strange in IMAX 3D is worth the money for the ticket. Seeing it on a massive IMAX screen is obviously the way to go but when it comes home to BluRay, watching it in VR would be awesome too with a massive virtual screen that looks 100 feet wide and they’re basically really expensive active 3D glasses (as opposed to passive glasses that are used in Real3D and IMAX3D films). Anyhow, PLEASE go see Dr. Strange in IMAX 3D while it’s still out; I think AMC is doing it for one more week.

I'm not going to be able to watch Doctor Strange until it hits streaming, so I used the time I saved by not listening to the spoilers to workshop the joke. I went with the hygiene angle, as I agree with James that this makes more sense. Hope this works better! I was at a restaurant the other day and I dropped my spoon. I picked it up and was debating whether to give it a quick wipe on a napkin or ask for a replacement when suddenly a waiter appeared by my side with a new spoon. When I commented on the speedy service, he said they always carry a spare for hygiene reasons. I assume clumsy customers are always dropping their cutlery, what great service! Later, I was having a drink in the bar when I noticed the same waiter and went to say thanks again for the service. I noticed he had a piece of string sticking out of his trouser fly so I pointed it out to him. "Oh that? well, the management were worried that waiters weren't washing their hands properly after using the bathroom, so for hygiene reasons they make us tie a string around it so that we can pee without having to touch it.", "Oh wow, it must be really awkward to get it back into your trousers afterwards", I remarked, to which he replied, "yeah, that's what the spoon's for."

I didn't like Doctor Strange before and I liked him even less after the movie. The plight of him not being able to get over his ex-girlfriend feels very misplaced in a movie where the central villain is dealing with actual loss and trauma. If he spent less time fawning over Christine and more time making friends with America then maybe it wouldn't have left such a bad taste in my mouth. With that said, really enjoyed all of the Raimi flourishes and the weirdness that comes with that. The whips, the pans, the zooms et cetera.

I couldn't care less about 3D, but I liked 4DX. I got to smell the purple flower in Black Panther thanks to 4DX (it smelled nice). However, I went after getting a back surgery, so when the chair punched me in my back during an action scene (which I did not expect) it was not fun. 😅

Needless to say I’ve never not loved the movie and its unmatched use of 3d. How to train your dragon came close but only because of the flying scenes. Avatar was fantastic throughout

I think Mr Fantastic did what was the best thing to do at the moment, she was unbeatable and only reasoning with her could stop her. And not to mention she was possessing their version of wanda so killing her is not the easiest choice to make. Then the movie ended with the good guy reasoning with wanda so he was right.

I think that an incursion is going to happen that will have 2 or more universes merging into one (like a lot of the big comic events that lead to massive reboots). It'll be a way to have FF and mutants keep an origin similar to the comics but still end up in the MCU 616 universe. Them and maybe other heroes that they haven't introduced yet could be used this way.

Spoiler warning After my 3rd viewing, I can comfortably declare that John Krasinski acted with and against no one on a green screen. Also the suit is CG. I mean, It's a pretty good comp job and the suit looks like the quantum suits. But my somewhat trained eye could tell.

I was kinda hoping they'd just randomly put in the version of Doctor Strange from the 1980s Scooby Doo cartoon voiced by Vincent Price. Even just in the background of one of the universes they fell through. I'll add that, even though its like the ultimate fan service moment in every way, I don't know if John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic works for me, at least long term. I kinda read it as (and I could easily be wrong) that he was just the version of Reed Richards in this universe so they could fulfill the fan service, then kill him and move on to the real mainline one. I think Krasinski really only fan-cast as Reed so much because they want him and Emily Blunt to just play themselves as the Fantastic Four I guess, cause he didn't really have much to him. He was fine as "council of nerds guy who gets easily killed" but I can't really see him in a full length Fantastic Four movie, personally.

Black Bolt's death will live, rent free, in my head until the day I die. It was so creatively visceral. And even more effective since, a couple of scenes before, we were shown how powerful his voice was. This is far from my favorite MCU movie (I still enjoyed it tho) but I must admit there are a few things it just did perfectly and anything horror related it nailed.

If Wanda got any comeuppance for that, at all, I might be closer to agreeing with you. But she did terrible things and just got to essentially walk off into the sunset, without apologizing or even acknowledging that what she did was wrong. I think that the movie was good but not great. Most of my beef was with the writing and pacing. I didn't mind the character of America but her dynamic with Strange seemed forced and I feel it should have been flushed out more. And I felt that her story would have had more impact if she was less goofy. Her back story could have had more emotional impact. I also disliked how Wong was sidelined and how we barely saw the multiverse. I don't care about seeing a bunch of different universes for the cameos, but more for the creative visual stuff they could have done. It just felt underutilized. Overall I enjoyed the movie but there were just a few things that prevented it from being AMAZING in my opinion.

I thought it was pretty clear that Wanda had been corrupted by the Darkhold. The post credits of WandaVision showed that process starting, and so by the time we get to MoM the Wanda we see has basically been mainlining pure evil for several months. The Darkhold had a similar corrupting influence on the 838 Strange and the third eye Strange (with 616 Strange now also corrupted) but the difference with Wanda is that she is *much* more powerful, and so a far greater multiversal threat.
