I had a brace from the age of 12 to 16, i wore it 3,5 years for 23 hours a day. I dont know how i did it but i did it. The shame and reactions from others and the constant asking for help was the difficult part, but i got through it. Anyone who is doing it now U CAN DO IT! Fight for your life, i did and i never went back to the hospital again!

It's 4 yrs. later and I'm seeing this. I applaud this dr. for feeling what we go through wearing a brace..the only thing he didn't have to deal with was the pain. I really hope he's come up with a brace that's more comfortable.

And that for years. They don’t understand what is feels like. Nobody understands what u are going through. I was in second grade when I got my backbrace. My mom couldn’t talk to me nor anybody caz nobody knew what I was going through. It emotionally and physically hurts inside and out. Nobody understands. I was 8 years old. And I had to learn to survive through this. If u think oh well that’s easy It’s not. Oh ur a trouper dude on the news.No. Girls all over the US have to deal with this for years and years. And he did it for a week.

Anna Burgess EXACTLY. Thankfully I only wore one for 2 years, but the psychological damage it caused is still there and I’m trying to heal from it 10 years later. Don’t get me wrong, this guy is great for doing this, much better than my doc, but there are so many factors that play into this. He’s a 40-something guy. Young girls who care about everything everyone says are wearing these. So different. Not to mention that no emotional support was even mentioned to me from the hospital I went to.
@huntress8276 жыл бұрын
He was just wearing it to have an idea about what to say to nervous new patients starting the process. I dont think he can say, "Oh I know exactly what it is like, to wear a brace!" Though now he can give his patients some extra insite on the reality of the brace wearing process. No one that doesn't have scoliosis will ever truly understand the social, physical, and emotional pain that can come with this, you are right, but he is better than the doctors that give you some cookie cutter description of the process and call it a day, then leave you to figure it out on your own. You are right about it being hard, but we need to embrace our condition, because that is our only option.

I wore a brace for seven years 23/24 hours. And still have it now. I'm wearing it right this moment, it's hard and very difficult to support a brace for long years, really. It's hard to wear it everyday. A great Thank You to Dr. Jaren Riley who tried to live the experience, but even, no one can understand what it mean to wear a brace for long years😥. One week is nothing, should that his experience be one year minimum! To understand little bit our suffer with scoliosis, and our fighting everyday. When i wore it for the first time, i was 11 y.o😢. And now, at 18 y.o, still wore it. Yeah, loooong suffering and no choice, all this to avoid surgery, and still have risk to be operated in the future, emotionally destroyed, and at very young age. All what i wrote is nothing compared to what we-scoliosis fighters-have supported and still support with this desease☺ I shit you not, really no one can understand what it mean to have a scoliosis, NOOOO ONE!!!! Living with scoliosis is a Torture!

Honey, I hope you've gotten a grip now that you're 21. This is coming from me, a former back brace user: you can NOT wallow in your own misery and you are NOT the most unfortunate soul on this Earth. I know that sounds harsh, but I urge you to find ways of coming to terms with your situation. See a therapist, talk to people, educate the idiots that look down on you. I know its not the life you chose, but it's your choice to learn from it or stew in it until your bitterness takes over. That is not a healthy way to live, friend.

Honestly, no one will never truly understand what it’s like to have scoliosis when they don’t. The brac sucks and knowing if you don’t wear it, you have to get rods put in your back. Don’t get me started on all the kids who have been picking on me for years because of it. I like that he actually tried to understand and get even more educated on a personal level. My mother had back surgery in her mid thirties. I told her once she has no idea what all of this is like. She told me she does because she had a minimally invasive spine surgery because of a broken bone or something. It’s not even the physical stuff that hurts. It’s all mental. And you only know that if you’ve worn a brace. You are more self conscious as ever, and you feel like everyone’s staring at you. I stopped wearing my brace to school just a couple months ago because I can’t handle the torment anymore. I’ve been trying to get my hours in at night but I’m shy just a couple. It sucks so so much. Anyone who is dealing with this, I wish you good luck. Just think about the day you don’t have to wear it anymore.

Yes. Rigid braces are torture. The SpineCor flexible brace is much better and more effective. Of course, if these young patients are compliant, rigid braces have been shown to work in many cases. However, SpineCor is the ONLY brace that can be worn while competing in sports and does not have the issue of muscle atrophy that can be a result of wearing a rigid brace.

It looks like a frightful thing to have to wear. How on earth do they breath? Or sleep?
@crisptomato94952 жыл бұрын
I had to wear one only at night (thank god) for about 4 years, and breathing is restricted but possible. You get used to wearing it and eventually learn to sleep with it on. Think of it like being a turtle whose shell is way too tight. The worst part is that the brace isn’t breathable at all so on hot summer nights your abdomen is basically getting steamed like a vegetable and also you can’t scratch yourself when you get an itch. Oh god and sleeping with a back brace + being on your period = hell lol.

Doctor Riley, why wouldn't you prescribe the Nocturnal Scoliosis Brace called the Providence Scoliosis System. My daughter Jess wore this with great success. She only had to wear at night. Before that she had a Boston Brace, she didn't like that one bit.
@savnae74156 жыл бұрын
James Tierney The Providence brace doesn’t work as well as the Boston brace and the Providence brace is usually only recommend for curves less than 35 degrees because it works faster and better on smaller curves.

the worst thing is that there is no awareness for this condition (wearing a brace myself!) and a lot of people don't understand that scoliosis is so much more than just curvature of the spine or don't know about the body image issues related to it. 🎗

Yall are being a bit cruel in the comments. Yes, I think more than a week would give a better idea of the whole experience, but 1: The earliest week is, for most, the WORST week, and 2: everyone's experience is different, he can't live out everyone's lives. This was an amazing thing for this doctor to do, and some people are being downright disrespectful to him. Sorry he didn't suffer enough to satisfy your grudge against the world, but if you're wishing YOUR suffering on the innocent people around you, you've got issues. Sincerely, a former back brace patient from age 9-13.

What happened if sever scoliosis patient wearing this brace .
@masterphoenixharp6 жыл бұрын
Pardon, but what exactly do you mean by that? Usually, someone with severe scoliosis would get surgery. However, many people who aren't at that level wear a brace accustomed to their spine's curves, to have the best effect. At least, that is what I think. I am also pretty new to this, only having gotten my own brace a few months ago, but there is padding on the inside for whatever reason. I recommend doing research and using professional or trustable sources. :)
