Another amazing story from Sarah Dollard after 'Face the Raven' and the range of emotion Capaldi showed as the Doctor in this episode is astounding. Look at how calmly he speaks when delivering that speech to Sutcliffe. He's not angry. He's not threatening. He's not saying "How dare you?!". He's calmly telling him what's wrong with his worldview, and how he can change it. Sure, the punch was immensely satisfying, but I'm more impressed by the Doctor's ability to remain calm in the face of someone he disagrees with, and Capaldi's ability to deliver that is impeccable.

Twelve decking the racist in the face is a REAL satisfying moment. I love it because in the past, he (All Doctors) has been dismissive of the idea of racism when it comes to companions (I.E. Martha in the Shakespeare Code) so watching him finally confront it was great.

Yeah cos it's so much more heinous than actually killing people, trying to destroy a planet or plotting the end of the universe. Those guys just about always get the reasoned appeal before any resorting to violence. That's one of the things that makes The Doctor who he is and such a valuable exception to the usual male role model. I mean yes we probably all found it satisfying at the time but it's severely out of character.

WolfGratz it doesn’t matter at all, the doctor thinks however the person writing the episode writes him as thinking. Lore gets dropped or retconned every series to make a storyline work for an episode. An alien using humans as fuel would be more acceptable than a human using other humans as fuel so he got punched for being a dick instead of having some grand invasion scheme, dicks are way worse

Well actually he didn't did he. I know yours is a popular view but if you stop to think about it (always a bad idea with Moffat) each clone lived a very short period of time and only has a memory of that time. So although we may well feel it (the episode didn't seem quite that long to me but it gave it a good try) The Doctor shouldn't even if Peter had to play it that way.

Such a good episode. I loved the way they continued to develop the dynamic between Twelve and Bill. The conflict between the two was really interesting and really went a long way to show just how old and alien the Doctor (at least this version of him) is. How seeing so much death and destruction has left him almost numb to it all. The difference between his reaction and Bill's was done so well because Bill's reaction is how most people would react, if they haven't seen anyone killed in front of them before. It made her instantly relatable. The way they both came to a mutual understanding of eachother by the end of the episode was done beautifully too. The exploration of profit over what's morally right was really well done too. How the exploitation of any living beings needs for profit and personal gain is never justifiable. Unfortunately, a lot of this stuff is still so relevant in the world we live in today. The way all of this tied in thematically with the hints at racism and the message of the value we should all place on any species' life was wonderful. Of course, all of this lead into the Doctor's big speech, which Peter Capaldi is the best at and it was brilliant, as usual. Really good episode overall. 7/10 Like you said, the first three episodes have been very straightforward and back to basics. That's exactly what Doctor Who needed at the time and it was working exceptionally well at this point of the series imo. I look forward to the rest of your reactions to this series.

Before I begin this reaction / comment, I've watched ALL of Season 10 on Christmas Day 2017 on BBC America and it was cosmic, no s-...sorry, let's begin. ( no SERIOUSLY, it was great day to be off to see an entire season before.... let's continue..😃). Thin Ice was one of those rare episodes that combines science fiction and commentary that in a way made you think. From their arrival at the Frost Fair, to Bill's reaction to Spider's untimely death and questioning 12 has he killed anyone....and the way 12 explained it..spot on. The exchanges between 12 and Sutcliffe... and his remarks to Bill...and that 👊 ( that's TRUE respect for a companion, thank you Aretha Franklin RIP ). The children of the Frost Fair are some of the strongest cast of younger actors and actresses I've seen in quite a while. As a footnote, this reminds me of the Season 1 Torchwood episode Meat, same fish like creature, same cruelty, but died brutally...Thin Ice's Fish creature, same parallels, but lived and swam to freedom. I could go on and on, but this episode is a learning experience in dealing with racial issues with kindness, encouragement to make the right decisions ( way to go Bill in saving the fish.... and everybody else ) and valuing humanity instead of DE-vauling it for self purposes ( Sutcliffe's got what he deserved )...and of course... respect...12 saw it in Bill, 👏...and a interesting adventure all wrapped up in one. And that knocking at the end of the episode.... just what is in the Vault that 12 is safe guarding at the University? To be continued. Once again Sesskasays, you nailed it, great insight and reaction, just keep getting better and better as we go along...3 episodes down, 10 episodes to go in Season 10. Have a great Labor Day weekend....and have a frosty drink ( 🍹 ) to boot, no snake on a stick ( that's NOT chicken...or sausage ) and onwards to Episode 4.

First things first: R.I.P. Michael Pickwoad, who was production designer for Nu Who from the Eleventh Doctor's first Christmas episode up to the Twelfth's exit, and who died a few days ago. His time in the role means that he would have been involved in the Eleventh's second TARDIS, which I think (detail geeks will correct me if wrong) was also basically the same design used for Twelve. His passing doesn't impact series/season 11, because - as I think most of us know - Boss Chibnall has brought a completely new team on board (I mean behind the scenes :) ) for what begins to seem like it might be a total reboot of the show. To business. Pleased to see that Jessica is indeed 'Vault-aware'. I wasn't very clear about that from the first two episode reactions, but I do get (especially after the reminder today) that she doesn't much like to get into speculating ahead. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that there is indeed more to come about the Vault and what's inside it. Bwahaha... etc. I recall one reviewer, after the original airing, commenting that that the bad guy in the bright blue frock coat bore a passing resemblance to former UK Prime Minister David Cameron. Don't know if that was intentional, but it wouldn't be the first time that the show has had a little political dig - and it won't be the last time - not even the last in this season! Good job, Jessica. Always a pleasure to watch, even though I don't make it every time.

Love this episode - the setting is great - the Front fares (where the Doctor also took River [and Stevie Wonder]) - the elephant was a thing that actually happened, btw - the dialogue between Bill and the Doctor is sparkling - the confrontation about how many people he's killed/seen killed, the brief discussion on history and how it's 'whitewashed', and the doctor's speech about measuring humanity are all wonderful. The only thing I think is a little weak is the obviousness of the bad guy - the proto-Dickensian evil factory-owner - and the plot resolution. But it's still remarkably effective, and has great production values.

The Waters of Mars, Kill The Moon, In the Forest of the Night, and Thin Ice make up one of the best four-parters in Doctor Who. Like… a series of ‘spiritual sequels’ spanning 8 years with multiple writers and Doctors is the most Doctor Who thing? They all handle the same specific aspect of the Doctor’s characterisation. The Waters of Mars is the turn-of-the-screw moment for the Time Lord Victorious mentality, we all know how that ends… So when faced with a very similar situation in Kill The Moon, Twelve refuses to have any part in it - he does a pendulum swing to the opposite extreme of just leaving it up to Clara, Courtney, and Lundvik. The result is the huge fallout between him and Clara. In the Forest of the Night is where that perspective is resolved, as the Doctor echoes Clara’s words about how Earth is his planet too and he recognises the part he needs to play in it. But the plot subverts the expected conclusion to that because there’s not actually any real danger. And then, Thin Ice. He asks Bill what they should do. He says the fate of the creature under the Thames can’t be up to him, he can’t be the one to make the decision - but he will help with what Bill decides is the right thing to do. “I serve at the pleasure of the human race. Give me an order.” At the end sum of this arc, he’s learned the middle-ground - he’s learned what ‘The Doctor’ would do. This character growth is incredible.
@cameraphone1206 жыл бұрын
I think the beast below is a part of this too. The Doctor was going to kill the Star Whale and put it out of it's misery and wouldn't let any humans have a say. Amy disobeyed him and found a better solution that he couldn't see and saved both the Star Whale's life and the ship. Thus in Kill The Moon The Doctor decided to let Clara choose as his companions have proven to be better at making these decisions than him

Thanks for the reaction videos. I really enjoy your site. You'll be caught up soon. I can't wait till you begin classic who. In the USA we all started with the 3rd doctor Jon Pertwee. In the 80s most of us got our first look at docs 1 and 2. I think you should start with doc 3. Once you finish 7 go back to 1 and 2. There are a bunch of missing episodes and the ones that are recreated are either animated or done with photos from the sets. Most of Patrick Troughton's episodes are missing. I enjoy docs 1 and 2 but some of those episodes are harder to watch just because of the missing stuff. Thanks and keep up the great work

Most of the US started with Tom Baker. While Houston, Texas did start with Pertwee, other PBS stations did not roll it out until it was known that Doctor Who was a sure fire donation drive pleaser. PBS as a whole paid the rights per season as the series went on. It all depended on your local PBS station if Doctor Who repeated from the beginning of that season or cycled through the entire series. I was between two PBS stations, one ran one Doctor Who every week night and the other ran two episodes on Saturday. I think that Pertwee is a fine place to start, because not all of Doctor Who is readily available.

G'day. Before I get into my thoughts of this episode, I know its been nearly a week, and you may or may not have heard, but the passing of Micheal Pickwood who designed this episode and all of 12 and almost all of 11. His designs were brilliant, engaging and done right modern/steam punk. I believe this is one of his best and while you may know it all not, but the Ice Fair scenes were shot in Studio. I was amazed when I first heard this, and it goes to the true talent of the man. BTS - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYfUfZJoba1qick Anyway, once again I really love this episode, about Bill being in the past and the world that revolved around this time. The idea of energy is a little uncomfortable and strange but seeing a business man who is using exploitation is one that reminds of that Dickensian world of Oliver Twist. But most of all I love the simpleness of the episode and seeing the growing relationship between the Doctor and Bill. BTW, the writer and customer designer, Sarah Dollard and Hayley Nebauer are both Aussies, which is great. Should have put this in The Pilot ep, but here is a little about Doctor Who and Australia. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJm9m4ZsermGgbM P.S- Love the look. :)

I really don't want to spoil anything and I don't even know if this would count as a spoiler but I have a question for the comment section so here is the WARNING!! Okay so... Does Jess know who will play the Doctor in the upcoming Series 11? Like she already said in a past video she knows when Capaldi goes, but does she know who cast and will play the Doctor next??

As a final note i would like to say on behalf of everyone who watches your reaction videos, Thank you for all your time hard work and dedication to this channel, may it prosper and continue through (TARDIS) time and relativity dimensions in space. Keep up the good work and once again thank you.xxxxx

The fear of water you're describing is called Thalassophobia, though it's usually just used to describe a fear of the deep ocean, so IDK if it applies to the river. Personally I'm pretty terrified of the open ocean but this episode didn't really stir that fear up in any way...

It would be cool to see Sesska react to Joe Vevers' Doctor Who voice overs for Doctor Who December

I've recently re-watched the whole season with my mom. I think, my favorite episode of this season is only two weeks away from you, Sess....

I freaking love Bill

I honestly think if bill would have been in more than one season companion, she would be my favourite (of new who). Its a shame they didn't keep her character. Maybe they'll bring her back bit I doubt it (new show runner and stuff)

Looks like Jodie will be arriving on Sunday 7th October, for the start of the new series. A few of the authors/writers are also announced, so just as you catch up, it moves on again. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2018/sep/05/doctor-who-moves-sunday-jodie-whittaker-first-series-october-bbc

HI Jess, just to let you know that there is a very dark spin-off show from peter capaldis doctor who series, the TV show is called (class) and when I say dark I mean very very dark, I know you will love it. So if you could do reaction videos for it I would appreciate it and love you so much more, hope you are well & take care from your number one fan steve.xxxx

I think season 10 is much better than season 9 because they actually know what they want to do with the doctor and it has a much lighter tone. Also im excited for season 11 because there will be a big tardis team and a board of writers rather than just having 1 writer making some mistakes

Ive always wondered if Jess would like Red Dwarf.. Its not for everyone and certainly not many peoples humour but who knows
@markmckeown876 жыл бұрын
TrunksGav she actually just watched 2 on Patreon and will be watching 2 (or 3?) more over coming weeks as part of her vintage tv series

Thats cool. Yeah s1 is a bit slow so now sure if she'll get into it takes up to s3 really... Unless she posts em eventually on youtube, which I doubt.. then I wont get to see.. $20 even at £17 is steep anyway.. Shoudlnt be anymore than 2-3 thats insane.. can see two movies for that
@markmckeown876 жыл бұрын
They won't be put on KZbin, but similarly she's not watching the first 4 or 5, Patrons voted on them. So I know she did 1x01 and then the next was 3x01 I think, or it was series 3 anyway.
