The crazy thing about the "whatever takes the form of an angel becomes an angel" rule is that, in Blink, Sally gives the Doctor a folder containing the DVD transcript and (I believe) photos of the angels. This happens before the Doctor and Martha are sent back in time by an angel. So it's *possible* that the angel that got the Doctor and Martha was born of those photos. It's unlikely given that he didn't know the image rule before this episode, but it's fun to think that the thing that saved the Doctor and Martha is the same thing that got them into trouble in the first place. Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey!

"Something you never, ever, put in a trap." I love Matt Smith's doctor. One little thing about the Doctor, River, and the familiarity of his past companions. River knows something that none of his prior companions that we've met knew, Not Donna, not Martha, not Rose, not Sarah Jane. Hi Jules, if memory serves the beach scene of the Doctor, River and Amy was the very first filmed for series five. Alex Kingston (River's actress) helped Matt and Karen figure out how to get into their rolls/put them at ease etc. To help you understand the relationship between the Doctor and River (spoiler-free) is to think of it like this; the more the Doctor knows River, the less she knows him, and the more River knows the Doctor, the less he knows her. Their timelines are back to front and go in the opposite directions. A very unique and intriguing premise imo and I think you'll really love how their story unfolds :) Just keep in mind that the Doctor hasn't actually 'met' River yet so don't feel confused just enjoy!

A fun little bit of history; during the initial broadcast of this episode on BBC One, The Doctor's 'One thing you never put in a trap' speech was overshadowed by a pop-up ad for the next show, which kinda ruined the cliffhanger. This resulted in *tens of thousands* of formal complaints to the BBC (for comparison, other severe and sometimes outright offensive incidents have been known to generate *dozens* of complaints), and they promptly promised to stop doing it. I guess there's one thing you don't put in Doctor Who if you're smart; ads.

Because of this the Doctor learns more about River, but at the same time, with each new meeting, River knows less and less about the Doctor. So now we can suggest that the Doctor and River's final meeting will be the complete opposite of the events in the library - the Doctor will know everything about River, and she will know nothing about him.

Hello, Jules!💜 An excellent episode, as you noticed, it gets you all wrapped up in what's happening and, before you know it - the end, for this week.😅 1:18 - With the wink of an eye. Yes! Exactly who you think it is. But, exactly who is she? A most cheeky character, however she fits into the Doctor's life. I love the banter between her and the Doctor. She definitely knows how to get under his skin.😜 "I had lessons from the very best. It's a Shame you were Busy that Day!" 🤣And she can fluster him instantly.🥰 Yes the Angels are less impacting here, than in Blink, and for the reason you state. This is a story of the Doctor, and River Song, with Angels, and a bit of a whingy, and disobedient Amy, demanding but not listening, then asking after the fact. River is certainly an enigmatic character 🧐 6:58 Amy could have been a little forthcoming here - like, maybe, but the video has changed.... 9:03 - Another moment of prediction - well done, Jules!🙌 Always on top of the plot.😉 The whole conversation with sacred Bob is fairly chilling here. I remember how excited I was for this episode when it first aired (series 5 was the first I watched “live”, after having binged series 1-4 and most of classic Who), and I wasn’t disappointed! The TARDIS scene was so good, she’s right at home with her heels hanging on the scanner and turning off the brakes (she’s definitely just teasing the Doctor about that btw, since all TARDISes make that noise lol. She probably just knows a setting to make it land silently). I was also not expecting the cliffhanger to be at that point (although I knew it was a two parter), that last scene with the Doctor pointing the gun up and saying “there is one thing you never put in a trap” was in all the trailers so I knew it by heart at that point 😂 Awesome reaction as usual, I like your thoughts about River and can’t wait to hear more in the next reaction!

This episode was pretty awesome to me from the point where River escapes (let's face it, she is a BA!!) to the point where the Doctor shoots a gun (one of the few times we see him with a gun). But I like that he did not use the gun on his opponents (the Angels), rather to create an opportunity! As for Amy; the Doctor did say "that which holds the image of an angel becomes itself an angel." The image of the angel is in the eyes, inverted on the retinas! And especially because she kept looking at the eyes of the angel in the video, she was then susceptible to becoming one! The head soldier is Iain Glen who would go on to play Ser Jorah Mormont on Game of Thrones (in case you've watched the show...). Such a cliffhanger! Can't wait!

Most of the Weeping Angels are not statue props but young women wearing masks, costumes and paint that took two to three hours to apply. Adam Smith called them "an absolute nightmare to film with" because it took a long time for them to get ready and they had to stand still for long periods of time.

Steven Moffat didn't waste much time in bringing back his two biggest creations from the RTD era: River Song and the Weeping Angels. I agree that while this story is good, it's got nothing on Blink. Blink is still one of my favourite Doctor Who stories, but it's hard to recapture the magic of the Angels' first appearance. One small thing I don't like about this episode is the joke about the Doctor leaving the TARDIS' brakes on. This simply isn't true. Not only has the Doctor's TARDIS always made that sound (originally created by scraping a key along piano wire), but every other TARDIS seen in classic Who made the same sound. Unfortunately Moffat is a self-described "slutty writer" and will sometimes write jokes regardless of the implications. Other than that though, it's a really good two-parter, packed with important moments. This was actually the first episode they filmed for the season, so a lot of our first looks at Eleven and Amy came from location photos from this episode. The whole concept of the church becoming militarised again, as it was in times past, is an interesting one. It's also tantalising to gleam some more details about River. You will get the full story eventually, but Moffat does a greay job of drip-feeding it to the audience. Oh and Moffat confirmed that River had other adventures with the Tenth Doctor offscreen, and a few years we finally got some in an audio box set called Expiry Dating. I'm glad you're enjoying this one so far Jules, I can't wait to see what you think of the next part.

Ashley!! I hope you have an excellent weekend!! I never knew there would be so much controversy about the TARDIS brakes haha! I thought it was a hilarious moment (blue boring-ers was GREAT) and didn't realise that it was a bit wrong 😅

@@julesreacts don't worry, it's only controversial for grumpy old fanboys like me. 😆 I hope you have a great weekend!

grumpy old fanboys 🤣 now I'm imagining you there, with a notepad and pen, picking apart the inconsistencies! But you do it with glee and a triumphant "HURRAH!" and a tut when you notice something hahaha

I love that trap speech so much. It's the first time the darkness that you saw in the ninth doctor really pops out in the eleventh. Eleven is such a good romp, but he can really get you when he gets all serious like that. I enjoy River so much more now than I did the first time round. I was just terribly confused and wasn't really sure I liked her, which was weird, because I have always adored Alex Kingston. But second time around and every time thereafter I really liked her, even if she is crazy over the top blowing herself out of airlocks. Unfortunately, it means Amy doesn't get much screen time when River is around and I don't think Amy is well enough established yet to take this much time from her so soon, but it is only one episode. Well, two. I am just anxious to get back to Earth and the things that Amy has been putting off.

Hello sweety intensifies! River is back! Oh we've ALL waited for this! No blinking intensifies! The Angels are back! ...mixed receptions about this. For many this is the one they started to ruin the Angels with the "the image of the angel itself becomes an angel" -line and (for the lack of better wording) "upgrading" their powers. To me the biggest crime they make in regards to the Angels though is that they SHOW us them move their head (in the next episode though). They just work far better remain far more scary when we DON'T see them move but instead see how close they get bit by bit over time. Plus it also implies their "true form" IS the said Angel statue, instead of it being just a cover they form once being seen as told before. Also, personally I'm not all that fond of how they now also make the Angels straight up murder their target instead of their original power where their touch just sent people back in time. (Despite me saying I wasn't all fond of that power back in Blink) I mean, I guess they can choose to do it or not, I suppose, but... still. On the next one, the one where Angel is full of Forest!

It's probably not too surprising to see the Angels and River Song again as both were created by Moffat so it's natural he'd want to do more with them as showrunner, in fact when River first appeared they did seem to be clearly setting her up as a recurring character to be explored in the future. I do find it amusing how an episode with Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont in Game of Thrones) involves something arguably similar to greyscale ;)

Originally, the episode 'Blink' was meant to be the only Weeping Angel's episode. However, the episode received such positive reviews that the show runners decided to make the Angels a recurring Doctor Who enemy.
