The Matt Smith era is my personal favorite kind of storytelling, but upon rewatching the Capaldi stuff, it truly is some of the richest material Doctor Who's ever had, rich in dialogue, themes, parallels, character study...new stuff you notice upon rewatch - like the Smith era, but in a different way.

This story sums up Peter Capaldi's Doctor so well. To me, he is the ultimate incarnation of the Doctor, embodying everything the Doctor has ever been and yet still brings across his own style. The speech he delivers was written for HIM, and, like 'Heaven Sent', there are only a few Doctors who could have articulated a speech like this so well with no music, and he's one of them. He’s not showing off, he’s just asking his old friend(s) for help and desperately trying to find the good in them, and Capaldi delivers his best performance. If David Tennant and Matt Smith felt like Doctors you could become best pals with, Capaldi's felt like a Doctor you could look up to and respect as a hero.

@@SorchaSublime I would argue about that. Spyfall was flawed, Tesla's episode even more. This was the first genuinely good episode in Chibnail's run. Spyfall was way to long for all the plot it had, and main storyline was pretty stupid; it had again another big bad corpo with unlimited power. And I feel like Master's reveal was way too rushed and not really impressive. Those two episodes could have been more fleshed out. Also Graham wasc unbearable in Spyfall. And for Tesla - it was too simple when it came to depicting the actual history aspect of it. It gloryfied Tesla, who was known to be a massive a-hole, and Edison was somehow reduced to be just another "big bad corpo" dude, which was not the only thing he was in real life. And villains were lackluster. Fugitive had really not many flaws (I cant recall any massive one - other than maybe Jack being side-lined). And story was packed and interesting through whole hour. Twist was played properly, and even if Im scared of Chibnail redconning some stuff, I will leave my judgement on that for the future. But overall it was way better than other stuff we were shown since Chibnail took over. As it did use companions properly, and had Doctor feel like Doctor.

God, seeing them kinda reminisce on the series and franchise as a whole a bit really sent me tumbling back the fuck down memory. I mean, we've been at this shit for nearly three damn years now. To think it once seemed so, so far away when they start season 1 episode 1.
@HaaruteLIVE4 жыл бұрын
I think Eric wanted to see more epic encounters like the ones given to Tennant or Smith, but I personally really enjoy the more meaningful and personal approach they took with Capaldi stories, and I think this episode perfectly encompasses his journey with his kindness bit, and by putting him in a literal unwinnable situation where the only thing he can do is either run away, or die trying to save others. He chooses the latter because it's what he considers to be the right thing to do, even if he doesn't know whether or not he'll succeed at all in what might be an actual pointless suicide mission. This man started as someone who didn't quite understand human emotion and didn't show that much care for it. Very pragmatic, very alien, and kind of a dick sometimes, though not on purpose. He just didn't get it. Then through several key moments, such as Kill the Moon and Mummy in the Orient Express, S8 finale with Missy, Magician's Apprentice, every moment with Clara, Ashildr, Clara's Death/S9 finale, and River, we see him turn into someone who is really trying to be better and nicer because he realizes what he says and does has consequences in others, and we see him start caring A LOT as a result. S10 is kind of the final step in this journey, where he's managed to calm down and become something similar of an ubersage of wisdom, where he doesn't rage or act in anger anymore, and instead he takes his pragmatic approach and uses it to find the best solution to save as many people as possible. Bill mistakes this for uncaringness initially, but he proves that he does actually care a ton, he just doesn't have "the luxury of outrage", and doesn't make situations about himself like he has before. Then across the back half of this season we see how he's trying to help his friend, Missy, do the same: Start caring ("I didn't know I even knew their names. You didn't tell me about this bit." "I'm sorry, but this is good.") This is someone that did an almost 180º change in personality and belief system across his journey thanks to the people close to him. Someone that found himself; from grumpy old man, to reckless rockstar, to kind teacher. And I actually think that the reason why he refuses to regenerate here is because, with the theme of this episode being the idea of "staying true to yourself", he doesn't want to give up on the ideals he's learned to treasure and hold so close to him. He'd rather die being someone who's kind, than the possiblity of turning into someone that is not. And that is the 12th Doctor.
@HaaruteLIVE4 жыл бұрын
This might just be me overthinking some stuff as usual, but at least in my mind, this is the reason why 12th is my favorite Doctor. Aside from Capaldi's mind-blowing performance on like literally any scene he's in that is lmao.

The Master says he didn't listen to anything the Doctor said, but I like to think the speech got to him deep down and that's why Missy is so devoted to the Doctor and their friendship since series 8 (all be it in her very own twisted way). That, next to the arc set up with whole "good is only good in extremis", the fact that the Doctor never finds out about her change of heart and Missy and the Master stabbing each other in the back. I love it all. Missy's arc, her ending, it is perfect... I hope no one messes with it in the future.

Fun fact: This was originally the end for Capaldi and Moffat with Twelve's last scene being "I'd hoped there'd be stars" before being teleported to the TARDIS and regenerating into Thirteen. However Chris Chibnall refused to start his tenure with a Christmas Special, so to ensure that Doctor Who didn't lose it's Christmas slot Moffat rewrote the ending of this episode so that Twelve held back the regeneration and could go on one last adventure. As a result of this it's kind of best to watch this episode as the big finale to Twelve's era (Both his and Missy's arcs coming to a close) and Twice Upon a Time as an epilogue.

Yeah. Simm's Master killing Missy is a rejection of what Missy represented; the Repentant Master. The new Master is absolute fury because the Doctor managed to defeat him as Missy. That sentiment he has is proof that he is post Missy, and despises the Doctor, as evidenced by his reminder of killing 4, and he is unrepentant about it. He is showing his Moriarty side more now, and that is cool to me.

@Gmail com Fair enough. Not quite my taste either in Season 11, but this Season, at least for me, is markedly better. If you intend to wait until she regenerates, I suggest waiting until the fans that did like her debate her best episodes, then try those. It will at least give a taste of her Incarnation, in case the 14th ends up facing anything that was triggered by her adventures. It sometimes happens that evil invasions we do not see in one Incarnation, but spoken of, are dealt with by a later Incarnation.

Missy is my favorite character, and I really, REALLY hope that she comes after Dhawan. He's a great Master, both utterly insane and somehow relatable in certain ways, but I just can't accept Missy's redemption arc being completely removed. My theory, which I sincerely hope is correct, is that Simm regenerates into Dhawan before Missy because he hates the Doctor more than ever for managing to actually redeem him in his future, and so in his next regeneration he tries to make 13 hate him before 12 redeems her (if that makes any sense to anyone), so that even if Missy somehow survives the Laser Screwdriver the future Doctor hates her too much for them to stand together, or something along those lines.

I like the idea that in his speech about kindness, the Doctor used the same trick as in Day of the Doctor: he was mainly talking to the Simm Master knowing that he wouldn't influence him, but hoping that it would stick to the back of his mind for the following years. Essentially planting the seed for Missy's redemption arc even if she didn't remember the specific events, and hoping she would side with him there and then. She might have too, and decided to kill the Master at that moment, but didn't want the Doctor to see her do that. Without witness indeed, both her siding with the Doctor, and the murder. Also that scene where the Master berates Cyber-Bill who says she's not upset, but then we see her in tears... That scene hits me right in the feels each time.

David Bradley played Hartnell in a BBC special about the start of Doctor Who and all the hoops they had to jump through to get the show greenlit. Moffat always intended for 12 to meet 1, but Hartnell had passed away long ago. So when he saw Bradley's performance, he knew he'd have a chance again. And Gattis, who always insert himself in the story, wanted a role that wasn't just a voice behind a mask. And Capaldi wanted to go out in style. And they didn't have the next Doctor lined up yet, they had barely gotten Chibnall interested in being the next lead writer. One more special in between allowed everyone involved to have their dream ending and to get everything sorted for the next (re)generation.

I absolutely loved this episode the first time around. So emotional towards the end. Plus, as far as I know, it’s the first time they’ve done a Multi-Master story (they’ve obviously done loads of Multi-Doctor ones). I actually preferred John Simm in this episode compared to his past appearances. He was more like the classic Master, even down to his appearance. He didn’t have the manic, “Here come the drums!” OTT thing this time.

Is it me or did they particularly spoke all over important bits of dialogue in this one ? Something they usually manage to avoid. And I know they dont read comments here but there are plenty of best-of specific Doctors out there on YT they could check out to relive some of their best moments ! And there is another fake-regeneration : the Matt Smith one with the astronaut ! ;)
@Wolf61194 жыл бұрын
They seemed pretty distracted going into this one yeah, there was a lot of "Mentioning other stuff this reminds you of" going around. They even missed "The Doctor's dead. He told me he'd always hated you", which bummed me out. Though I think Capaldi's speech about halfway through really helped them to refocus lmao

Shouted, rather than spoke. They missed a great deal of the dialogue.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it, but I can't help noticing how much you actually missed by having non-stop, irrelevant, shouted conversations throughout every scene.

Man, it's so emotional witnessing the Blind Wave Crew reacting to Capaldi's end much like I once did. Capaldi is without a doubt my favorite doctor, he is THE Doctor. It's just...such a shame he didn't get the best stories. Don't get me wrong, he did get some of the best stories! but he didn't get nearly enough of them. Whenever Capaldi gives a speech, it's like he pushes the show to a whole new level! When he is allowed to just go wild and fully embrace The Doctor THAT is when the show is shining at it's brightest! Capaldi's doctor is kind, but also dark. When Capaldi wanted to he could channel all of the dark sides of the Doctor through his acting and eyebrows. Seriously though, he could channel any side of The Doctor, because he IS The Doctor. I could most likely write a whole essay about why Peter Capaldi is the greatest Doctor, but it all boils down to personal preference. I just wish they would have given him at least one more season! And more one season with Bill, to develop her some more. Because despite the whole Cyberman situation with being awful, I felt that her sendoff was kind of anticlimactic, just like with Clara.

Clara clearly said "the long way round" meaning she has infinity if she wants to wander around time and space till she decides to return back to Gallifrey and that was always Steven Moffat's intention for Clara as mentioned in his interviews. And the 1 hander was Heaven Sent not Hell Bent.
