Hey, if you dont like it, dont watch it. Simple solution.
@starlittardis20494 жыл бұрын
Yeah, as much as I adore this show, I kinda wish less stuff was personally about the Doctor. I understand why she would be involved in a lot of "big things" in the universe, given who the Doctor is, how long she's been around, and all the stuff she's done across the universe. But I don't want to see that stuff very often. I like that her name is known by so many people, that the legend of the Doctor is famous. But I want it to be because the Doctor has happened to get involved with so many different people / events during her travels. I don't want the Doctor's own life and identity to be some massive, secretive thing. I want her to get involved with other people / events that are massive and secretive. She's enough just as she is; she doesn't have to have mysteries about her. I prefer companions to be the same way; just whoever they are, no big plot attached to them. I feel like it often takes away from a character's worth in their own right when they're given these massive plot points / backstories. Just let them be who they are, we find them plenty interesting enough that way. That being said, I did enjoy this episode when it aired. I definitely don't hate this idea, I'd just rather leave it than take it.

The idea that the Doctor is more than just a Time Lord goes back to the Sylvester McCoy days. Hints that the Doctor was older and not quite what we thought were in Remembrance of the Daleks and Silver Nemesis, among others.
@ftumschk4 жыл бұрын
Correct. I'd just add that what was hinted at for McCoy was far more impressive than what we've seen with the Timeless Child. From what we've been told so far, what initially set the Timeless Child apart was merely the ability to regenerate... an ability which was exploited by Tecteun, and which every Time Lord now possesses thanks to Tecteun's efforts. So, apart from once being the (passive) donor of some regeneration genes, the Doctor isn't particularly special as far as we know. Certainly not as special as the mysterious godlike being suggested during the McCoy era.

A theory I saw about Missy being after Dhawan pointed out the similarities between the matrix, which uploads the consciousness of dead time lords, and the dark water episode where upon dying humans were uploaded to a data core thing and then turned into cybermen. It would make sense if that happened after this, because it would be fresh in Missy's mind if she regenerated after the death bomb - like if maybe Dhawan only just managed to escape it but was still touched and regenerated into Missy. Also none of Missy's plots tried to have the Doctor killed, because she knew he would survive to become Jodie.

Main issue with this episode is that nothing feels earned. Except for a name drop the Timeless Child really had no build up. And The Doctor doesn’t even discover it herself. Even the Ruth Doctor doesn’t add much. It’s just explained through a PowerPoint presentation. Also how come Clara never saw any pre Hartnell Regens yet some random machine from Brain of Morbius managed to discover the pre Regens while the Doctor had no memory of them? And the way The Master just let’s this random old man enter and explain everything and doesn’t bother to kill him right there was dumb. Oh and the Doctor just leaves him to do her work. Dunno felt really out of character for the Doctor. Along with how the “Fam” just left her no problem. Cyberman and Cyber Time Lords felt rather pointless. Also Graham talking to Yaz was pretty sad. The writers are practically saying “Yaz is great. Please be invested in this character” to the audience. Welp anyway took 3 years with ups and downs but they’re finally caught up. Guess it’s time to go to the playlist and start back a Series 1.

So from what I’ve seen, the general consensus towards the timeless child is that it is a very solid idea that would be so interesting to be explored and extrapolated upon in seasons to come… if it had been literally anyone other than the doctor. (Personally I think it would have been cool for it to have been Susan, and like maybe the 1st doctor left Gallifrey- among all the other reasons- to get her away from the Time lords). But other than that lukewarm reveal, I still enjoyed the episode quite a bit. I really think Tecteun became Rassilon, using their “discoveries” to set themself up as a legendary figure amongst the timelords. I really thought that Ko Sharmus would have turned out to be an exiled Rassilon, serving penance for his sins or whatever. It would’ve made it a more impactful moment when he takes the trigger from the Doctor to sacrifice himself. But I digress. And I seem to be in the minority of people that enjoyed the Cybermasters. I love the design, the idea of an army of self-healing cybernetic corpses is terrifying, and the idea of them fits really well into series 9 hybrid. The best part of the episode for me was definitely Sacha Dhawan’s Master. I love him. He’s so feral and manic, and the chemistry and tension between him and 13 is palpable. (“The history between us does mean something. It’s the rage and pain in my hearts.” Chills, for real.) And seeing a Master who’s had his understanding of his place in the universe ripped out from under him is endlessly entertaining to see. For so long the Master’s been a character that’s done anything and everything to cling to life, but now he’s basically begging the Doctor to kill him. By bringing her down to his level he’d be able to claw back some illusion of control in his life which he’s convinced he’s lost. Other than the timeless elephant in the room, it was a pretty solid episode. People have asked how the Master was able to destroy Gallifrey (or at least the Citadel) singlehandedly, and here’s how I see it: so after the Time War, the Timelords were hurt and battle weary. The planet was almost very nearly destroyed to begin with, so that’s most of the work done. They hide at the end of time to rebuild and lick their wounds, but then the 12th doctor shows up to evict Rassilon and the High council from the planet. So like at this point Gallifrey has like little to no societal structure or enforcing government. It’s probably like the wild west; without much order and people just look after themselves. In comes the Master, hacking his way through the Matrix. He goes in deep, and discovers many secrets, one which makes him quite the mad lad. This deep into the collective consciousness of all Time Lords, he could have easily have found information pertaining to the citadel’s weak spots or any number of helpful hints that could help him enact his tantrum upon the already battered and beaten world. Ta-da. Gallifrey Falls More. And also, not that it matters, I see the SpyMaster as post Missy for a couple of reasons. 1) If the reason for him being pre-Missy is due to Missy’s character development, then by that logic every possible iteration of the Master from now til the end of the show would have to be pre-Missy, and I really don’t like the idea there being a true “end” to the character. 2) Even with the Missy Character arc, I think that finding out about the Timeless child would have completely undone that. It would have broken something inside the Master (as the episode very clearly shows), and he would have reverted back to his natural predilections just to prove that his previous self “turning good” was a fluke, and not some predestination due to a “piece of the doctor” being inside of him, and guiding his nature over time. And 3) Maybe Missy WAS a fluke. A single bird straying from the flock of Masters. And after regenerating, the SpyMaster just reverted to form, and repressed his former self, the same way the other Doctors dismissed the War Doctor as not being truly one of them. And if the reasoning for “O” being pre Missy is that Missy couldn’t have survived the Saxon Master’s laser screwdriver blast: The Master always survives. They just do. They always find a way to give death the slip. It really doesn’t need to be explained.

The really funny thing is, one of the writers on the show back in the '80s put out a theory a lot like this, and was raked over the coals for it by the fans screaming that it couldn't possibly be true. I hope he's gotten some apologies.

@@Rmlohner Lungbarrow isn't the best piece of writing in the Whoniverse, but for all its flaws it still defined a line between "The Other" and The Doctor. If I had to be totally honest with myself. If this reveal had come at the end of series 1-10... I don't truly and honestly know if I'd of had an initial problem with it. But as it comes after a couple of series, I personally feel has been extremely sporadic in quality. Often having a tone that feels like I'm being talked down to. Using the Doctor to explain the plot rather than feeling like she is only at the centre of what is going on. Quite sparse with quality dialogue and character interactions. Fugitive of the Judoon was the only episode in these past two series that I've truly felt I'm watching the show I fell in love with. Perhaps what I'm feeling is that this particular story doesn't feel earned. Perhaps developments in series 13 will help.

The whole idea of this episode and season was such a cool idea but a total mind fuck because this clearly wasn't the intent from the beginning. Like, obviously at the very very beginning, none of this regenerating stuff was a thing but then with the revived seasons, this _clearly_ was not the intent and it just messes with everything. It's going to be incredibly hard to correct the timeline and background and make this episode make sense after this episode.

I dont want to get into why I HATE this episode too much because I have complained enough and its not fun for me to complain about it, it is genuinely upsetting for me and makes me sad because as a huge Doctor Who fan it changes all the things I loved about the character in a way where I don't know if I will be able to enjoy the series anymore and that is so sad for me since I have been watching the series my whole life and I dunno... I dunno if I can enjoy the series the same way going forward. But what Eric said is accurate to me, I don't think Chris Chibnall should have the right to basically shit on the last 50 years of the series in such a way. Like Rustle T. Davis brought the series back with the Time Lords being dead. This was something to change the Doctor's view going forward. This changes who he was in the past and we are supposed to just accept that this has been the case for every previous Doctor and I don't like that. Would Chris Chibnall like it if the next show runner came along and said that all his work on Doctor Who didn't happen and isn't cannon? Probably not. And from where I am now, I hope that happens. I really like Jodie Whittiker as the Doctor and I don't mind the companions and even most the episodes are at the very least okay, its just a shame that the first Female Doctor has had in my opinion the worst ever episode and arc and also doesn't even get to be proud of being the first Female Doctor because there were now Female Doctors before her. I will continue watching the series and I hope I can get over this but being honest, not sure I can.

The 10th Doctor always claimed to be 900 years old, even though the 3rd Doctor said on multiple occasions he was several thousand years old. And there were hints during the 7th Doctor's run that he helped create Time Lord society. The implication that The Doctor had other faces and a very long life before William Hartnell's Doctor was already present in the classic series. As for the revelations in this episode, all I can say is this: When you have a character who has been written by over 100 different TV writers over the course of 60 years, whatever that character's backstory is or ends up being will inevitably be fraught with continuity errors. Some continuity details will line up and others won't. At the end of the day, though, the backstory doesn't really matter that much. In any story, what matters is who the character is today and where their journey takes them in the future.

It’s good that It don’t make the doctor a god or a saviour. Now, the timeless child is an abused child, his memories where erased and the Time lords made him regenerate into a young boy body. The Timeless child died and reborn in the person who later decided to chose the name Doctor and run away for helping people and discovering the universe. The First Doctor is still technically the first one for those who are wandering. I liked this final and I love de Cyber masters design. And it don’t really change the canon because all we know is still true for a lot of people’s in the show but it add things before that we didn’t know. We don’t know where is the Timeless child come from so maybe it will be a « Gallifrey 2.0 » type civilisation... I can’t wait to see what’s next in Chibnall 5 year plan.

It's very funny to me that the Time Lords discovered and mastered regeneration before time travel, but waited before naming themselves, "well, we might come up with an even cooler invention later!"
The whole idea of what made the doctor "the doctor" was that he rebelled againist his peoples code and used his morals and beliefs to change the universe wherever and whenever he went. What made him powerful was that he was "never cruel or cowardly always kind". His morals and beliefs inspired so many normal people he met along the way to do better, with all his companions becoming better versions of themselves almost like pseudo doctors continuing his message even when he left them. The importance of his character and why so many people fell in love with it is because it showed that anyone, even a runaway from a alien planet, can be powerful from only their morals and beliefs. This new concept ruins all of that by saying the doctor is only important because of his genetics and is a God type character which is something the show tonally always went againist. The show always made a point that race or religion doesnt matter when it comes to doing what's right. Which is why its bafflingly they went this route. This change allows the Doctor to go on forever. He has to be a god type character to continue. The point of the Doctor is that he will always be needed. Without him travelling and battling evil, all life ends. With him travelling, they have a chance that he will show up to stop it. Chibnall actually gives a scientific explanation as to why the Time Lords stopped the Doctor from dying on Trenzalore. The fact they hid it from the Doctor after experimenting on him is very much in line with the Time Lords behavior when it comes to the Doctor in the past. It is very much the lengths they are prepared to go to when they plot anything, and shows why the other species hated and feared them, and why the Daleks were in many ways correct to wage war on them.

Personally not a fan of the big reveal for two reasons. 1. It makes The Doctor unique among Timelords (and the universe) by birth and not just by actions. I much prefer somebody being the hero/chosen one because of their deeds and ideals, not because of their birth. 2. The execution. This episode threw "show don't tell" to the wind But also, I'm alright with it because I'm sure it won't really affect anything. This was advertised as "changing everything" but it doesn't make much of a difference, and no showrunner is going to come along and do a series arc focussing on this. It'll eventually be one of those things that got revealed and went nowhere, being ignored a few years later. (same as the Doctor being half human, etc.)
