You wrote a beautiful tribute to William Russell. Russell was an absolute legend, and both he and Jacqueline Hill brought Ian & Barbara to life in an iconic way, delivering the show's heart. Even though he is sadly gone, he certainly will never ever be forgotten. My favourite Ian moment was when he persuaded the Thals to stand and fight against the Daleks in the first Dalek story. Perfectly shows Ian's empathy, strength and determination, which must've inspired the Doctor to become the hero they are today. One of my favourite stories with Ian that has stuck with me was The Romans. Even though it was fairly light-hearted in tone, that story perfectly demonstrated how fantastic and capable both he and Barbara can be even without the Doctor.

It was actually a little refreshing with villains who didn’t really have any ulterior motive, didn’t really want to conquer the world or the Universe. The villains just wanted to have fun cosplaying. And that coincidentally happened to be fatal for the victims they were cosplaying as.

I had the pleasure of meeting William Russell at a comic con a few years ago, while in cosplay as the First Doctor (grey hair spray, never again), and something that genuinely caught me off guard was how warm and kind he was. Not just polite, or appreciative or energetic, but genuinely warm and kind. The first thing he said to me was "Hmmm, you look familiar, though I think I'll stay on Earth this time around". Then he asked me if I'd been a fan of the show for long, if I'd watched the old series before the newer ones, was I enjoying the convention, he even switched up franchises and asked if I was a Harry Potter fan, because "my son is in those and they're great fun too". We had our picture taken together and it was honestly one of the most incredible moments of my life, it didn't quite hit me til about ten minutes after the fact that I had been able to talk with someone who actually had the chance to work with and KNOW the likes of William Hartnell, Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, and Marlon Brando, who auditioned for Verity Lambert HERSELF, who was a human foundation in what continues to be arguably this country's greatest TV story, 60 years later. I was so happy to see him appear again as Ian in "Power of the Doctor", and so awfully sad to hear of his passing last week. Though I was reminded of the First Doctor's line from "The Sensorites", and for whatever reason it seemed to cushion the blow quite a bit - "It all started out as a mild curiosity in a junkyard. And now it's turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure". RIP William Russell

Ian wasn't just a blueprint for future companions, one could argue he was the blueprint for future Doctors. It shaped the entire course of the show. We wouldn't have the show we love today without William Russel. A beautiful tribute.

I definitely agree on the Doctors thing. It's noticeable that as soon as the Doctor becomes an action man the male companions pretty much cease, rather as if the two 'jobs' had been combined into one. And Ian is very much in the mould of, say, the Time Traveller from 'The Time Machine', especially the Rod Taylor version. Looking back it's rather as if th the Doctor was initially two seperate characters...

"Try not to invent tarmac....1902 got away from me" I love the fact it's now very much a thing that the Doctor can get too excited and just accidentally invent something too early. Eleven invented both pasta AND Yorkshire Pudding by accident, Ten accidentally invented the banana daiquiri, and I'm fairly certain one of the classic series Doctors accidentally invented hot cocoa at some point. Not to forget that time the Fourth Doctor (somewhat) unknowingly played a major part in the creation of all life on Earth 😂

Yea but the doctor knew Madame de pompadour was from history plus yes from his pov it was couple of hrs but from hers it was her whole life so she developed genuine feelings that the doctor reciprocated. They knew more about each other and it wasn’t instant. This with rogue felt so out character and rushed. If it had been a first episode to build a foundation between the characters and then he pops up later like river I think would have been more plausible. Maybe the doctor has a certain app on the sonic that’s why he landed there 😂

The doctor didn’t, she fell for him. It took him two series to admit he loved Rose and he never even got there with River. This is forced tripe for no other reason to be progressive. We’ve gone from the oncoming storm, someone the Daleks fear, to a random bloke who sobs every episode and gets off with blokes after 10 minutes of meeting them. I binged Doctor Who at a time while I was volunteering with a wildlife rehab shelter. After a while I started giving each animal that had a particular personality little nicknames that I’d call them (permanent residents had names but we usually didn’t name animals that would be released back in the wild) I did a rescue of a juvenile bald eagle who didn’t yet have his white head feathers around the time I had caught up on New Who and began Classic and named him Ian Chesterton. He had a broken wing that made a full recovery and was released within the year.

It's not a massive reference to Bridgerton, but the motif of rewriting pop songs to a classical theme is a big part of that show, and 2 or 3 such examples appear in this episode

In the latest issue of DW Magazine, Jonathan Groff talks about doing a deep-dive into the show and watching An Unearthly Child. He says, "What really struck me is the scene where the two teachers are tracking down this young girl who you end up finding out is the granddaughter of the Doctor. They follow her into that sort of eclectic place, sort of like a junkyard with antiques everywhere, and the TARDIS is in there and they go inside and they can’t comprehend how something so small on the outside is so big on the inside, and the Doctor says something like: ‘It takes people a while to fully comprehend something that’s so far outside of what they understand. I said to Russell [T Davies], there’s something innately queer to me about that. Something innately alternative that feels like a direct line from that very first episode all the way through to the first gay black man playing the Doctor. I can see how far it’s come in the way the culture has evolved but at the same time, even back in 1963, they’re saying something quite alternative and profound in that scene." It seems ironic now, in light of that, that we've lost William Russell now and that 'Rogue' turned out to be the episode dedicated to him.

@@stuartbrown8309 I don't think he's saying that was the intent, but that he sees a parallel with the "alternative/other", and Ian and Barbara being unable to understand or relate to it, that aligns with his own experience. The concept of Doctor Who and the TARDIS weren't very common ideas in 1963, and the Doctor has always attracted fans who feel like an outsider in some way, by being LGBT+, autistic or whatever.

My mum was a child during the Hartnell era and I think he remained "her Doctor" afterwards. I remember her saying how much she liked Ian and Barbara, and how none of the companions afterwards were as good. She's gone now too.

Not just the Doctor's love of companions. Ian and Barbara were the reasons the Doctor loves humanity. They were his first human friends and the growth they facilitated is still visible in the very core of who the character is. William Russell and Jaqueline Hill are the Doctor's two hearts, and they're still beating strong. RIP to the very first.

Favourite Ian moment, oh where to begin? Inventing fire, impersonating a Dalek, preventing the destruction of the entire world, or maybe the lovely scenes as he and Barbara finally make it back home? I was lucky enough to meet William Russell on a couple of occasions a few years ago, where I thanked him for being so brilliant in the show. I dont mind the performance but this season simplifies Doctor Who to its most basic and formulaic components. The Doctor calls her a cosplayer, and later she literally says that's what she is unprompted! That's like you summing up your life as 'KZbin commenter'

With the exception of 73 Yards, where the nature of the "villain" is deliberately mysterious and Dot and Bubble, where the motivations of the Dot AIs turning on their "masters" is left ambiguous, all the villains in this series have had clearly defined motives. As for nuance... I'm curious, what previous Doctor Who monsters/villains of the week do you think of as particularly nuanced? I mean, no disrespect intended since I love all of them, but even the most frequently recurring/well known antagonists in Doctor Who are generally quite one note. Daleks, Cybermen, The Master, The Sontarans, The Weeping Angels... really only The Master has any sort of real nuance and even then he frequently defaults to just "The Doctor except evil". One off villains are usually even _less_ nuanced, so... I don't know, I just don't understand where you're getting this idea of DW villains frequently being complex from.

I wasn't aware William Russell had died until I saw this. I'm glad to see they were able to put a dedication to him at the end. It's hard for me to single out one favorite Ian moment, because he was so good. His appearance in 'The Power Of The Doctor' is certainly up there. I almost cheered when I saw that. I say the biggest impact Ian and Barbara had was that they taught the Doctor to be less self-centered and care about the welfare of others.

I was five years old (nearly six!) when Doctor Who was first broadcast. My earliest definite memory of it is a scene during the first story when the stone age people were shouting and screaming and I thought they were witches. But as a mature six year old I came to love the original Tardis team and follow their stories with increasing fascination. Keys of Marinus with the travel dials was a favourite. Loved Ian and Barbara and seeing William Russell back in the programme in Power of the Doctor brought me to tears. I was just gasping at seeing Jo and then they hit me with that. What a moment....

That was a wonderful tribute Jess, beautifully written and incredibly touching. It's easy to take it for granted over 60 years later, but there's no denying that William Russell (and also Jacqueline Hill) was responsible for turning Doctor Who into the show we know it as now, his impact and legacy is indelible and will be felt for as long as the show continues. It's honestly hard to pick a single favourite Ian moment, there were so many great scenes - larking around in the Roman villa, rousing the Thals to fight the Daleks, teasing the Doctor about his engagement, joking around with Barbara on the bus upon returning to "London, 1965!", his little cameo in "Power of the Doctor", so many great little scenes. He'll forever be remembered as an iconic and integral part of the show's early history, and the benchmark for every companion who followed him thereafter. RIP William Russell, we won't ever forget you.

What a touching tribute to William Russell! Brought a tear to my eye, watching that. Favorite Ian moment? Hah, where to start? I can hardly pick a favorite, when every single moment with him is excellent! Though, it's not any grand, spectacular, powerful scenes that stand out in my mind - it's the little things. William Russell's delivery of the banter; the jokes; the ordinary interactions with the other characters, all show so much personality and charisma. Ian laughing at the Doctor accidentally getting engaged in _The Aztecs,_ for instance -- it's moments like that that really made the character, for me.

Great tribute for William Russell. My favorite Ian episodes were when he was fighting in The Aztecs and relaxing in the villa in Rome. He just made Ian so real and fun to hang out with. I am happy we got to see him again in Power of the Doctor.

A beautiful tribute. The actor previously known as Russell Enoch was something of a matinee star in British movies in the 1950s and your eye was always drawn to him. Chatterto-Chesterton was a lovely creation and boiled down all the best traits of the English male stereotype who gets on with things and stands up for what he feels is right. And he was a kind of model for the likes of Steven, Ben, Jamie - and even Harry Sullivan. Ian Marter was actually cast in case Dr Who No.4 turned out to be an older actor (this was a possibility). I also think that 'Russ' (as Peter Purves would say) gives the best first reaction to seeing the Tardis interior. The sheer disbelief is palpable!

Seeing Richard E Grant is a huge deal because he’s actually played The Doctor twice before, the first was in a comedy skit in 1999 called The Curse Of Fatal Death which was also written by Steven Moffat and the second was in a web series animation called Scream Of The Shalka in 2003

What a lovely tribute to my FAVORITE companion of all. William Russell as Ian was a gem. He was the hero from Day one, irreplaceable. Jess, I found your videos during the 60th Anniversary, and now I've watched years and years including Doctor Who Decembers, which I loved. Thank you for the love for Classic Who, especially for Hartnell and Troughton. After I saw your reactions to Ian and Barbara, I looked for your reaction to The Power of the Doctor since I knew what was coming at the end. A lovely tribute to William Russell. I’ve not seen many stories with him in, but I have a couple of the earliest on DVD. His character Ian was rather admirable in coping with the situations the early - perhaps obstreperous - Doctor rather threw them into. His final appearance in the role, even for those few seconds, as part of the group at the end of Power of the Doctor was a moving moment in its own right.

Favorite Ian clip: From the beginning of The Chase, when Vicki picks watching The Beatles on the visualizer, then Barbara gets upset that she calls them 'classical music' 😄and Ian jumps to Vicki's defense. It's a fun little moment, but sadly it's something of a deleted scene now thanks to rights issues. I don't remember how much of it, if any, made it on to the DVD. I do remember seeing the intact version on PBS in the '80s. Someone did make a telesnap version of it on KZbin. The mystery Doctor hologram, like others have said was Richard E Grant. He played the Great Intelligence in the 11/Clara era but way before that he was in Curse Of The Fatal Death (a Steven Moffat charity spoof) and later the flash animated webcast Scream Of The Shalka (which also features pre-Doctor Who David Tennant). Both are entertaining and might be worth adding to the next Doctor Who December 😁

One of my favorite Ian moments it's that scene where he and Barbara finally get to LONDON 1965, I love to see their smiles and having fun around the city. My real favorite moment is the final dialogue between Ian and The Doctor in the season 1 finale: "DOCTOR: Our lives are important, at least to us. But as we see, so we learn. Just here for the William Russell love. "Say hi to Jacqueline for all of us." ♥ My favourite Ian moment actually is more a First Doctor moment but it's a dialogue exchange that I think sums up the Doctor perfectly: in "The Space Museum", Ian is missing a button on his jacket and the Doctor comments on how interesting it is. Then they say this: IAN: "Doctor, why do you always show the greatest interest in the least important things?" DOCTOR: "The least important things sometimes, my dear boy, lead to the greatest discoveries." And it just reminds me of those times when minor clues lead to major reveals in the show. Like in "Asylum of the Daleks", when the Doctor figures out that Oswin isn't Oswin because she wouldn't be able to get the milk for her soufflés. And it was just a throwaway funny line earlier in the episode. As a backup, I also love him in "The Romans", just for his scenes alone with Barbara after the Doctor and Vicky leave the residence in episode 1. And as a backup-backup, I liked when he beat up that giant ant in "The Web Planet".

That was such a lovely way to start the video. RIP William Russell. One of my favourite Ian moments is more of an Ian/Barbara moment, when Barbara tells him in The Romans that there's ice in the fridge, and Ian goes to get some ice before he realises she's taking the piss, and then how he reacts and plays with Barbara about it. They're such a sweet pair together.

I haven’t seen the animated story but apparently he identifies himself as the 9th doctor. But we already have Eccleston as the 9th Doctor. So, perhaps he’s a pre-Hartnell 9th Doctor? Perhaps part of the Fugitive Doctor’s regeneration cycle?

​@@zemoxian it may be the case that either RTD is going to be exploring the "Unbound" side of the EU (most likely) or he's going to expand on an idea referenced towards the end of the old 8th Dr Novel line. This idea, although unlikely he'll be doing this, is that there are actually three different 9th Drs. It's never explained and there are little to no details about why there's supposed to be three concurrent 9s, but in my head cannon the the three are War, Shalka and Atkinson. There are some similarities between shalka and 9 (Eccleston) where both are around in a time where galifrey is destroyed. If RTD is going with a version of the Novel's idea, it could be that shalka eventually becomes the valeyard and eventually regenerates into Michael Jayston.

A lovely tribute to William Russel. He will be dearly missed. And fully agree with you about liking the way each story in the season has a vastly different vibe, the variety is one of the things I adore about Doctor Who. On Bridgerton, while I also haven't seen it, apparently the use of orchestral arrangements of pop music that this episode used is also present there (which is apparently a pastiche on Regency drama) There's a subtle... I don't know if it's intended as a joke, as foreshadowing to a very minor reveal, or if it's a weird coincidence... With the way Rogue - who took his name from his a D&D class, presumably his preferred one because if you prefer playing Druids why would you call yourself Rogue, was introduced at a party brooding in what is basically a corner. There is a stereotype of Rogues being played in a 'dark and edgy' way by having them sat in a busy tavern, brooding in the corner, not interacting with anyone (not everyone plays rogues this way, I'd argue it's not a _good_ way to play them, but... That's part of the Rogue Player stereotype). Rogue at the start of the story is cosplaying a D&D rogue cosplaying a Regency Lord (while the Doctor and Ruby at the start of the story are cosplaying as a Regency Lord and Lady, before at the end of the story Ruby winds up cosplaying a shapeshifting bird cosplaying as herself cosplaying as a Regency Lady and the ending of that story has shades of Twelfth Night due to that.)

I would have come to watch her reaction to the episode anyway but when I found out that William Russell had passed last night, I knew I had to come here and see if she watched a version with the tribute on it and her reaction because I knew she liked me and my boyfriend adore William Russell's portrayal of Ian Chesterton and fell in love with the character itself. When she opened with the words William Russell broke down crying again. Big hugs to everybody mourning here in these comments and all of our love to William's family and loved ones.😢

Did you notice the… Extra face in the lineup of the doctors incarnations. That was Richard E grant, who appeared in a set of Doctor who animations in the early 2000s as the 9th “Shalka” Doctor, before Eccleston got the role for the 05 reboot. According to the VFX artists Richard came in and gave them a full photo shoot as his Doctor in live action just for the cameo. I wouldnt mind a reaction to “Scream of the Shalka” eventually. Although that would probably be a long time from now (After you’ve done classic who)

Wonderful tribute to the OG companion. I've never been a fan of the one-episode romances, like Girl in the Fireplace and Voyage of the Damned, mainly because it feels so quick, especially when put alongside the fuller relationships the Doctor has. This one is no different for me. Granted, I'm a River/Doctor OTP shipper, so that probably has something to do with it. On that note, DOCTOR!! MENTION YOUR FREAKING WIFE!!! There were so many opportunities for it, from the "who did you lose?" conversation to the moment with the ring (the only time the Doctor's had a wedding ring was Twelve for River). After Thirteen not telling Yaz specifically about River until her second to last episode and Fourteen not telling Donna about her (even though Donna's met her), I'm kind of sick of the Doctor holding River and their time with her so close to the chest.

Ian and Barbara are absolutely my favourite companions of all time. Smart, resourceful, loyal. Barbara showed the Doctor empathy, Ian showed him how to be a hero. I was lucky to meet William Russell at a convention just over 10 years ago. He was absolutely charming and I'm glad I got to tell him what an honour it was and how much I enjoyed his work. Rest in peace, Sir Ian Chesterton.

A thing that looks like a police box, standing in a junkyard, it can move anywhere in time and space?" - Setting up the tenplate for all future companions, speaking for the viewer new to this show & trying to understand what is going on!. Spoken with just the right amount of incredulity! He carried the show & was the leading man, in the many episodes Hartnell wasn't available due to illness. So without him I think the show would have failed

I found your tribute to William Russell very touching. My favorite Ian moment is probably his clashes with Ixta in The Aztecs, but I also love when he and Barbara are in the villa alone in The Romans after the Doctor and Vicki have left, teasing each other about the "fridge" and giving off very post coital vibes. As for this episode, I think I'm on the same page as you. It was a decent story, the villains were a bit camp, the flirtation between the Doctor and Rogue is easily the highlight. I'm intrigued to see where the show is going in the finale. 🤞

We have to remember that The Doctor and Madame de Pompadour did some mutual mindwalking and that is what clinched it for both in so short a time. Let's also remember that, apart from the telepathy stuff, that Madame de Pompadour was a courtesan and possibly was quite used to getting a male's attention in a certain fashion as a way things were done! The Doctor himself said "France. A different planet!" People's schemas also ran differently because of it being a vastly different time period.

Also I know this is twee but it's Doctor Who so I'll indulge myself by remembering that as yet, canonically, both Ian and Wilf are alive in-universe and I choose to imagine that they would have met through the companions support group and become firm friends. I have a favourite William Russell moment, which isn't an Ian moment as such. Mr Russell was the star of the show The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, which was an international success. And so, to promote the show, he got to ride a horse down New York's Fifth Avenue, dressed as Sir Lancelot. Pretty sweet! (Best Ian moment is what he first meets the Doctor - "Doctor Who?". First title drop, also pretty sweet.)
