My biggest problem is that it feels like it skipped the Doctor getting to know his companion. That's my favorite part and they speedran through it.

Compared to RTD first run and the finales there, this two part finale is definitely the weakest of them. Particularly The Empire of Death feels like a let down compared to how well the setup was done in the Legend of Ruby Sunday.

Part one was a lot better than this part. Thou l still laugh that the Tardis had this god clinging to it for centuries…but freaked out trying to throw off Captain Jack. Plus it has exploded a few times..

I was really enjoying this episode up until the end. The Doctor controlling the TARDIS with a whistle was a lot of fun. I like the solution of this episode and the idea of death of death creating life. I just didn’t like the end. Though the sentiment that something is important because we ascribe it importance is nice, it feels like such a cop-out. Her being just a regular person doesn’t make sense to me. Because then why didn’t Sutekh the name of anyone else who was in the same position as Ruby? I much rather would’ve preferred Ruby’s mom or even dad be some type of other member of the pantheon, making Ruby a demigod. And I’m really interested in seeing where the Mrs. Flood stuff goes. I’m glad they kept that open. And I am sorry to see the season end so fast. With the Doctor being in only the majority of 6/8 of the episodes, I feel like I barely know him. And while I love that we have an emotional Doctor, his crying every single episode really makes the whole crying thing less impactful.

I believe in the behind the scenes stuff (only available in the UK) they said that this episode was inspired by RTD’s hatred of The Rise of Skywalker.

15 and Ruby appear in a sequence set in the Memory Tardis during this episode detailing his first battle with Sutekh in the Pyramids of Mars version of Tales of the Tardis...

26:00 thank you Vogel for explaining that. now I get it. I do wish the show explained that a bit better. yeah sure the Doctor said his lines to Ruby but you crystallized that concept better 👍👍. Vogel you should help write Doctor Who, or help RTD out, pretty sure the showrunning weariness is starting to creep up on him.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the Ruby's mother reveal...but I ended up like that she was just a normal/ordinary person. But I also think this is another misdirect. Maestro said that something was wrong with this creature and that the Oldest One was there that night...maybe it just wasn't the mother. Maybe the Oldest One was shrouding her like Sutekh did to the TARDIS...which is why Sutekh was so fascinated by her identity. Funny how the next episode is the Christmas episode and the strong ties to Christmas and this story (so maybe it isn't finished). Also, although we had the reveal of her mom we haven't met the dad or found out her real name, so there are definitely ways to bring Ruby Sunday back in. I hope so since I enjoyed the entire Sunday family.

@@geekedmedia Maybe...at the end of Maestro's episode they did mention "the One Who Waits is almost here" which was Sutekh and not the Oldest One...but putting a secret song in Ruby's heart doesn't seem like Sutekh's style. I still think there is more to Ruby's story in the Christmas episode.

I think Michael has hit the nail on the head, the whole snowing music thing was a combination of the Tardis perception filter and Sutekh bending reality. A wild speculation about Mrs Flood, purely on her final outfit, the White Guardian???

Most underwhelming season. So much so I've restarted watching the Eccelston episodes as a palette cleanser. Also the "real mother" line was disrespectful to her adopted mom the woman who actually raised her.

My only complaint about this season is that it felt truncated. In terms of character development / chemistry it feels like there were a few episodes that might have been cut for efficiency at the cost of ideal storytelling. Sometimes it just felt like the duo had suddenly grown so close but how was skipped over.

It's just a shorter season order for whatever reason. According to Wikipedia, the next series is also 8 episodes.

Ive been a Dr Who fan for years. They tried way to hard to make the Doctor relevant. The Doctor cried almost every episode, and was afraid, out of character. The Ruby's mom mystery was disappointing.

Out of character??? Tennant was emotional AF. Smith was sensitive. Capaldi was gruffer and Whitaker was like a child on Christmas morning half the time. What’s out of character with this Doctor indulging his emotions a bit more? Please.

Agree with you John that this season was 2-4 episodes too short. I didn't feel like we ever got enough development of Ruby and the Doctor's relationship as well as Ruby's family never got the development needed for us as the audience to really buy their dynamic with the Doctor. Overall I enjoyed the season and sits in the middle of my personal season rankings of NuWho
