Same, I still dream of going as Toby/someone being posessed by the beast for Halloween. Probably won't do it this year, but I've promised myself to do it at some point, simply because of how terrifying and impactful this was for my younger self. (and still is to me to this day) The whole concept of this two parter is brilliant imo.

Scary stuff, indeed. Back in the classic days people used to say kids watched it from behind the sofa, some of the monsters and stories were so terrifying. I was very happy that they carried on that fine tradition.

Fun tidbit - The planet surface was filmed in a quarry in Wales on cold... Either November or December nights. And for a couple of the nights it absolutely refused to stop snowing. Leading to the showrunner, RTD, needing to write a line of dialogue to explain how it was snowing under the surface of a planet without an atmosphere. ...They never needed to use that dialogue due to a change in the weather. My other comments about this story will come next week.

Amusingly there's a running joke that many, if not most, of the scenes from classic Who that were supposed to be an alien planet were "filmed in a disused quarries in Wales". Not the same quarry every time. Just whichever one they felt like using that they hadn't used for a while.

This two-parter is so, so good. While it doesn't make my personal list of the show's best episodes, it does represent a lot of the best things about Doctor Who. It's tense and intriguing, philosophical and emotional, and just the right amount of thrilling and scary. The scenes with the voice of The Beast speaking to Toby and Mr Jefferson, as well as the scene of Toby bathing in the light of the black hole as he beckons Scooti to her doom are so awesome and so creepy. Additionally, I *adore* the Ood. They're such a good creature design, and I feel awful for them with how both humankind and The Beast just use them as slaves - not to mention that the station's crew member who is supposed to be on the "Ethics committee" and manage the Ood's welfare thinks of them as stupid lower lifeforms, which is reprehensible. The Ood are wholesome and they deserve better. Except for when theyre being controlled by The Beast and zapping people to death, that is...

This is one of the great episodes of Doctor Who. This episode reminds me very much of Event Horizon in that its a haunted house kind of story in space with Lovecraftian overtones. The Timelords are so ancient that something older than them is like a ghost story to the Doctor. You know things are scary when our friendly Lovecraftian horror can't translate and has no lore. It's like being friends with Cthulu and all the sudden he is spooked by finding Yog-Sothoth. But yeah the haunted house aspect means that the Ood are possessed. Poor Ood. Its tragic. It really is nice that at the thought of being stranded they whimsically begin fantasizing about living together and spending their time together until Rose dies. Also a funny little note: there's a Doctor Who mod for Fallout 4 and you can create an item that will summon the TARDIS so if you forget where you parked or which piece of junk its disguised you arent stuck. Unfortunately unless his pockets are bigger on the inside I dont think he has one. And I'm not sure they are canon lol

More or less the same, though for me the actual first time (that I can remember) was the unreleased Skasis Paradigm track from the School Reunion. But this episode was the point I started to pay way more actual attention to the music, rather than just accept that there's something in the background. And the best of it is that the tracks work SO well with the cinematics and both of 'em compliment each others while at it, as they should, creating these great moments. Speaking of which, out all the moments so far (currently at season 7) my absolutely favorite one is still the use of 10's Theme in the "You and me! One last run!" for SURE! The sad defeat, the spark of hope, the last run... The EMOTIONS...!! ...I can't wait till J reaches that one!

Trivia: the visual effects of black holes can basically be divided to “before 2014” and “after 2014”. Before 2014, visual effects teams would design black holes for a given project, and the representations varied wildly. In 2014, a visual representation of a black hole was modeled on a computer, giving us an image based on equations rather than artists renditions. Every black hole I’ve seen in film/tv since then (admittedly, it’s about 2) has used some variation of the modeled representation. Why was it modeled in 2014? For Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” (which, as I understand it, isn’t 100% correct but it’s fairly close).
@therealpbristow

Even for this story in 2006, they *could* have done a more realistic representation, but when RTD saw the sketches he said "no, I want a classic Disney-style black hole!" (referencing the movie "The Black Hole", from the early '80s).

You went "ooh" about the possibility of Rose and the Doctor living together, but they HAVE BEEN ever since she started traveling with him. We mostly see the control room in the show, but the TARDIS is *much* bigger on the inside than that. You saw the wardrobe closet when the new Doctor chose his outfit, but there are also bedrooms, showers, and many other features. It gets explored in a later episode called "Journey to the Center of the Tardis".

This one is why I got into nuWho. I had watched the fourth doctor back in the 1970s but I figured the 2005 version would be crap made by TV suits. My ten year old son watched this and was terrified so I said he couldn’t watch anymore unless mom checked it. Mom did check it. Mom loved it! I became more of a fan than my kids😄. But dang this is the most terrifying episode ever! As far as Rose’s feelings for the doctor…this incarnation of the doctor is more “human” in superficial characteristics than many versions of him. But he is very alien. I think Rose has forgotten that. Tidbit- classic who episodes were often 4 to six part twenty minute episodes. The two parters are a modern version of it, similar in length as each episode is about double a classic ep length.

My only feedback at this point is that the mesmerizing cliffhanger practice was a trademark for "Doctor Who" through all its existence. The vintage series always had multiple-part stories, be they 2 parts or 12 parts. Naturally, to keep the viewers glued to their tellys, they had to master the practice of the cliffhanger...and yes, they have upheld that mastery with new-"Who."

this two-parter has everything i love in a good doctor who episode from this era. a scary story, prickling tension and absolutely amazing atmosphere. i also love those episodes where the doctor and his companion get stuck in a place seemingly without a way out bc the tardis is indisposed, and even better when we have a time limit on our heroes' survival for some sci-fi reason. on top of that, in my opinion the relationship between the doctor and rose just glows. it's something that's been undeniably brewing in the subtext of each episodes before as well, this sort of unresolved tension between them that has so much potential but for understandable reason neither of them really ever acts on it. we get a few mentions of something going on being between them and as a viewer i feel like we do feel a lot of that potential, but i just really love those moments where these two are pushed into a corner where they put some of it into words. their talk about a domestic life together here, just the fact that it passed rose's mind and that the doctor didn't disregard the idea outwardly right away says a lot. i really could write a whole short essay here about ten/rose and all the ways she's special to him and the ways the doctor lets himself feel more than ever before bc of her and for her. but i don't want to spoil things and i think it'd be something you'll see for yourself anyways.

@@obiwankenobi687 No. The black hole isn't spinning. Pretty sure if it was it'd be a quasar or at the very least we'd see the stars moving and our view of the system falling in would be different. However you are missing the main point of what I said. A black hole isn't a planet so they are not, in fact, in geostationary orbit. Even if they were in orbit above a particular spot. They might be on a planet in a stable orbit around a black hole but that isn't geostationary. I'm assuming what they mean by geostationary is actually a stable orbit. Or perhaps just hovering over one particular part. Especially since if they were moving at the spin rate of the black hole landing would be even harder because the gravity corridor would be curved.

The two parters are a good throw back to classic Who where stories were staged over general 4, 1/2 hour episodes. Although it could be anything from 1 to 10 episodes at times as well. @ftumschk
@ftumschk 11 ай бұрын
Indeed - a planet or anything else, for that matter. A speck of dust could orbit a black hole basically forever, provided its orbit was at an appropriate distance. It's only if an object crosses a black hole's "Event Horizon" that it gets sucked in.
@ReddwarfIV
@ReddwarfIV 7 ай бұрын
Geostationary orbit is basically impossible, though. Black holes usually spin at near the speed of light, so any planet going around it in geostationary orbit would have to be going FTL. Given that the characters can look up and watch star systems get eaten, that's obviously not what's happening. Most likely the writers just put in some technobabble without understanding anything about astrophysics. ...Also "geostationary" is defined as an orbit over Earth that holds position over a specific point on its surface, which excludes any orbits of black holes.

Human evil finds a 'thing' that becomes more powerful as it absorbs human evil. Fortunately, there's this wizard who arrives at exactly the right time to counter-act the evil. Worth finding. Some famous actor's you'll recognise. It was also made in the same Welsh slate mine as this Doctor Who story.

This is such a great story and definitely one of the show's scariest (for a family show), it's such a great example of space-horror. Doctor Who has a long tradition of horror, that dates right back through the classic era. There's actually a fantastic story called The Dæmons, which also deals with demonic entities. However, whenever Doctor Who deals with supernatural subjects, they usually provide a sci-fi explanation for it. The Ood are a nice addition to the Whoniverse, it's not their fault that they're susceptible to psychic influence from other entities. Fun-fact in regards to the Doctor buying a house: towards the end of Classic Who there were actually plans to give the Doctor a house that he'd use as a base when on Earth. This never came to fruition on-screen, but in other media (novels, comics and audio-dramas), it's been established that the Doctor has a few different homes on Earth that he occasionally uses. Additionally, the Third Doctor was actually exiled on Earth for a while, during which time he worked for UNIT as their scientific advisor and lived in a house (although we never saw it). Finally, in regards to two-parters, the first few sessons of New Who all followed the same format - thirteen episodes a season, including three two-parters, followed by a Christmas special at the end of the year (speaking of which, at this rate, I believe you'll be watching the next Christmas special just before Christmas, how exciting!). Another brilliant reaction Jules, I can't wait for part two.

As you undoubtedly know Doctor Who was a show for decades prior to its cancellation and then revival (which tou are watching now). Classic Doctor Who had a different format jowever, with a season containing a number of stories made up of multiple 30 minute long episodes (most often four to a story, bit also often six). So an average Classic Who story would be a little longer than one of these two-parters, split into four with a cliffhanger at the end of the first three episodes.

Yeah, I love the variation between the single episodes and multiparters too. That they can maintain quality regardless of length is honestly Who’s greatest strength. The only challenge is it forces me to separate multiparters from single episodes in favoritism as it feels unfair to compare a 45 minute bite to an hour that goes 1 hour plus or longer. The Ood are a great alien creation, riding that line between slightly unnerving and empathetic.it’s really great design work. Aw man, gotta wait a week to see the next part!

Absolutely the best 2 parter in the series for me. It's just so well done. Note though when it comes to the Ood. Basic 100 means brain death. The Ood are just being puppeted they are already dead by the end of the episode and are just being used as weapons.

I swear in one episode or another, the tardis can always be remotely transported to the doctor via the tardis key. The fact the doctor doesn’t use this in this episode is likely because he knows there’s something to this mystery and he doesn’t want to tell rose, or because y’know writers have to plot for plot reasons.

Arguably the best story in series 2, which gets quite existential in the second part. An excellent ensemble cast as well. Incidentally, the Ood are inspired by a Classic Who alien species called the Sensorites, from the very first season in 1963-4. The Sensorites were a telepathic and (mostly) gentle natured species who were also bald with a fringe of fine “tentacles” around their mouths (not as Cthulhoid as the Ood’s tentacles). It’s believed the two races are somewhat related.

I can't drink as much coffee as I used to as it can affect my tummy in bad ways😥 I agree that the Ood are one of the more nicely designed aliens that we've seen Are you familiar with the author HP Lovecraft? As much as I love these two parts, I wish writers would get the whole orbit stuff right one of these days... For one, _nothing_ speaks against orbiting a black hole (unless they meant an orbit _inside_ the event horizon, which would look _very_ different from that "look outside", so that's hopefully not what they were intending here... Also, gravity would simply be tearing the whole thing and everyone on it apart in no time). And then there's the "geostationary orbit around a black hole" nonsense... Geostationary (ignoring the fact that "geo" literally refers to Earth, so an orbit like that even around Mars wouldn't be called geostationary, _only_ around Earth) means that the orbiting thing keeps the exact same spot of the surface underneath it all the time. Black holes don't even _have_ surfaces, _and_ they're rotating increadibly fast (due to how their existence starts as rotating stellar bodies, and the mass concentration - think of an ice skater turning on the spot and pulling her outstretched arms in, she rotates much faster; with a black hole, there's a _liiiiiittle_ bit more of that mass concentration going on...), so even if there was _some_ kind of definable surface, at the shown distance, to maintain a sationary orbit above the same spot, they'd probably need to be orbiting at faster-than-light speeds - and even if they were orbiting "just" at _nearly_ the speed of light at such a distance, that whole asteroid thingy would simply be spiraling off into space, not stay in orbit...

Hiya, wonderful job as always. After a week, I've got used to the animals all calling me Daddy O. It's amazing what you can get.used to. The goats and ducklings got into a huge argument over how is a better sidekick, Rose or Willow. The ducklings are sighting all the great things Willow can do, according to The Historical Documents, (Galaxy Quest reference) while the goats just kinda go "oh yeah, well Rose is cooler " . Then they turned to me and I said one name, River, and both sides were quiet. Oh,and the ducklings now want to watch Futurama, hope they don't start liking Bender, fingers crossed. Have a lovely day, and we all love the shirt.

I still remember something Bender said in Futurama. He had been attacked by an axe... and he said "Kiss my axe hole". BAD BAD ROBOT 🤣🤣

Ow wow, what an episode! Losing the TARDIS isn't something that happens often, but it has happened. Well, I guess maybe once a season or two seasons.... I suppose, depending on how you define "losing..." Like when the TARDIS "died" in the Cybermen episode, or simply that it is gone... Once again, your comments have enhanced the viewing experience quite a bit! Yes, I am saying you make watching Doctor Who a better, more fun experience! It is like watching with a good friend and fellow Whovian as opposed to watching alone or with someone that doesn't care for the show! I am really looking forward to the next one, just to see what is in the "pit" and to see how they escape the black hole!
