This episode is all the more impressive when you know it was written in less than a week as a last minute replacement for a script that wasn’t working. Part of the reason most of the episode takes place in a small tour bus is because it made the episode easier to budget for and sort logistically at the last moment. The set up is actually so simple that there’s a play version of this episode- a fact I only discovered when my drama class was assigned it a few years after the episode went out. That performance is why I can technically claim that I’ve played the Doctor, so I have fond memories of it!

@ahumanbeingfromtheearth15025 ай бұрын
@julesreacts the script wasnt quite as last minute as they made it seem. The actual script was written very late, but Russel T Davies has talked about how he had the idea for the episode years before, but was worried that it wouldnt go over well with audiences. Even still, turning what was just an idea into a great script so quickly is still very impressive. It's likely that if it wasn't for the need for him to rush the script, the idea likely would have remained just that.
@ThePandorica5 ай бұрын
I think you were bang-on about Tennant's Doctor showing off here. The brilliance of the episode is how it subverts everything the show (and the character) usually does and turns it on its head. The Doctor doesn't get to be the hero; he's just helpless and humiliated. The monster is an invisible, unknowable force whose motives are never explained. And the human beings that are so often championed by the Doctor as these amazing, inspirational creatures quickly become scared, vindictive, petty and selfish. And when the Doctor tries to take the moral high ground and regain control of the situation ("Because I'm clever!"), he loses everyone's respect instead of earning it, and just comes across as desperate and arrogant.

My favorite 10th doctor episode! Every doctor has a habit of talking their way out of situations to a certain extent but with 10 I think his mouth is his biggest asset. I love this episode because it turns that asset against him and he almost gets killed because of it. It’s the most powerless we’ve ever seen the doctor up to this point and this episode does such a great job of building that tension and fear. I also love how it’s never explained what the entity is or how it works, it’s much scarier that way imo. I could yap about this episode for ages haha.

The Doctor gets into trouble because he's showing off here I think. Unlike last episode where everyone is on his side, it just dosent work here. His main weapon and strength is his ability to talk and talk and talk his way out of a situation, so when you take that away he's so helpless and lost. His joy and glee at getting to chat to learn about the strangers on the trip turning to horror when he realises he can't convince them he's on their side because everything he is saying is punctuated by someone repeating what he's saying Love all the characters - Dee's intelligence, Jethrow's cynicism and youth, The Professors obstinance, the Dads male perfomative agression, Val's racist paranoia (Best line for me is her delivery after "I just... travel around, I'm a traveller" and she shoots a look "Like an immigrant?" CHILLS!), the Hostess who you take your eyes off and forget with her insistence on the rules only for her to become incredibly brave saving everyone working it out Also Sky! Poor Sky. What an actress. I wanted her to play a female Doctor after seeing her here deliver everyones lines and parrot them back. She's briliant in this and in other tv shows like Bob & Rose. Her fear and paranoia that her ex wife had somehow got her... so sad! Believe it or not, this isn't the darkest Doctor Who will get 👀 It is the most scared we have ever seen the Doctor in the new series I think. I wonder if the midnight entity is still out there.. Thanks again for a great watch. Highlight of my Wednesdays ❤

The fact his showing off doesn't work here, and the pushback he sometimes gets, is one of the biggest reasons I love this era of Doctor Who - he keeps tending towards style over substance as a character flaw, and the writing intentionally knocks him back for it. I've grown to like later doctors more, but if anything they seem to celebrate his self-regarding moments or not notice them

It's the lack of a companion. He generally has a human on his side that bridges the gap between his "humanized alien demi-god" and the common people. Not having one here ends up exposing for what, at the end of the day, he truly is: an alien

The writing is incredible, the acting is so good the camera work, the lighting, the atmosphere. Everything about it is an art piece. How the scenario went is honestly super realistic. It's unseen, there is nothing to focus on and it shows so many aspects of humanity, the horrible things we can do and how we treat others. It made The Doctor face something that they hate facing. The ugly side of humanity sure but he also saw in them what he is capable of and that genuinely terrified him, more than the monsters and the daleks and all the other, the doctor fears them self more than any of them.

The Doctor is his own worst enemy. It was his interest, his focus that led to him being trapped. He is so sure of himself but there are things in the universe beyond even his understanding. This is one of the best Dr Who episodes. I think it even rivals Blink just because it is so simple and self contained and yet the horror, the evil, isn't just an alien, it's the silly little humans and their fear of the unknown. The actress who played Sky absolutely outdid herself. Tennant is absolutely brilliant so it takes a lot of chops to match that energy and she did that in spades.

It reminds me a little of the third-ever Doctor Who story, back in 1963, _The Edge of Destruction._ It was set entirely on board the TARDIS; she'd broken down, and the Doctor and his companions (who barely knew each other at that point) started falling to paranoia and blaming each other. This is such a fantastic episode, and remains as tense as ever when re-watching! Midnight really helps to showcase the importance of the companion. Without Donna to vouch for the Doctor, the other humans had less reason to trust him and were put off by his apparent arrogance. You can imagine if Donna had been there, she would have been telling everybody to shut up and listen to her friend because she's seen him save multiple lives before. I also really like the exploration of fear in the episode. Every character plays a meaningful role in showing how fear can expose flaws and warp thinking. Seeing the Doctor's fear, as you say, is also terrifying. He has no idea what the Midnight creature is, and it's quite a shocker for the audience to see him without any knowledge about what's happening! The "pool is abstract!" line always makes me laugh even though we have no clue what the context is -- a real testament to the actors both telling and responding to the story in that moment. I've been watching these reactions every week and always look forward to them, Jules 🙂

The thing that’s interesting about this episode is that it’s mostly just one long scene. There’s the intro and the outro but the main bulk of the episode, once the vehicle breaks down, is basically just one long scene with minimal time jumps. Some DW stories span multiple days once the enemy shows up, but in this episode it arrived and was defeated in about 20 minutes. Funny how, just like in real life, one small event can totally overshadow everything else that happens in a day.

It's great seeing him so young here. I also love the writing in this series. It's so unusual and, though episodic, is always uniquely unpredictable. So much so, it leaves you often in awe and surprise. We're all so lucky to get to share these with you, because you make them so fun to see again. SUCH a good episode. The point of this one was to shine a light on human nature, and see what happens when the Doctor’s intelligence and charm is turned on him, so often everyone just trusts him and follows what he says and this is a rare occasion of people actually challenging that and not defaulting to him. Regarding him and Donna getting split up, in terms of the story it was to take away his loyal companion so that he’s properly alone, if she’d been there she’d be on his side and dilute the whole ‘everyone turns on him’ thing, but also a scheduling thing, so it joins the likes of ‘Love and Monsters’ and ‘Blink’ in having main cast be mostly absent in order to film elsewhere.

The doctor from The Empty Child was Gaius, Uther's actor was in the episode with Sarah Jane Smith and Guinevere's actress was actually in the episode The Girl in the Fireplace (it was near the beginning in the gardens, she was with Madame de Pompadour). My scriptwriting tutors often say that restrictions make better scripts because it forces us to work out how to work around them and still produce something compelling. Midnight is Exhibit A. It's well documented that it was an emergency script from RTD due to the original guest writer having issues with theirs. (I forget which, it was either meant to be from Stephen Fry, which never came to pass at all, or from someone yet to to come so I won't say who). RTD had to write this in a short time for a limited budget (even by Who standards!) and this is what came from that. Frankly, a masterpiece. As an amusing connection, Steve Pemberton, who guest starred in the previous Library episodes does a series called Inside No. 9, and I've always felt that Midnight was right in that vein of creepy that they do so well. Almost felt like he guested one episode too early!

If it's any consolation for this episode: the hostess's name would be learned from the Employment Registry from the Resort. It wouldn't remain a mystery for too long to The Doctor and such. Such a remarkable episode.
This has to be one of my favourite episodes, I watched it as a kid when it aired, and it both terrified and interested me

An interesting thing to note is that by removing Donna, we see one of the important things a companion does, because even the most charismatic personable incarnations of The Doctor came come of as quite distant, all the things that the passengers called out about his behaviour that can grate against normal people, and that's one of the things that the companion is for; they serve as a buffer between the Doctor and other people. I'll wait to the finale to go deeper but it does fit my view of Series 4 as a study in all the important roles Companions occupy other than someone to prompt the Doctor to explain stuff.

This is why Russel T Davies became known as the king of bottle episodes. To try and save some money for the much more costly episodes (like Silence in the Library), they had to get creative with other episodes. This season, they did that by splitting up the team and filming two episodes at once, Midnight and Turn Left, with the Doctor and Donna separated for most of each episode, following one in each. In Midnight, they cut a LOT of costs by having practically all of it set in a small set and re-using the dashboard portion of the Gridlock episode for the cockpit. In Turn Left they saved a LOT of money by having large, expensive portions be reused footage from earlier episodes. And just like Blink, another bottle episode, Turn Left and Midnight are some of the highest rated episodes of the entire show.

I really like this one. If I were stuck on an empty planet, I’d probably mess with the little car as well.

This is one of the best episodes because it shows a companion having a trip to a different planet and time that isn't an absolute nightmare... for them specifically.

The actor who plays Professor Hobbes is actor David Troughton who is the son of the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) in real life. The first episode of NuWho without his TARDIS or sonic screwdriver which I'm so glad to see for a change. One of the best of the Tennant era proper scary Dr. Who.

you say it is a fault that most humans tend to look after themselves first but keep in mind we are the product of an evolution. That means that this trait is something that developed because it was beneficial for survival

Donna feels like so much a natural part of the show from the moment she shows up that it kinda diminishes how special a lot of her era's episodes feel in my memory (I think back on parts of 10's run based on companion). I think about them and they all feel, like, equally strong without many peaks that rise above the rest, but that's because they're all just so good. The entire run of Donna-era episodes is just so generally impressive. Getting to revisit them through these videos has been an absolute treat. I'm gonna need to do a proper rewatch, too.

A terrifying episode!! Shows how scary normal people can be when truly terrified!!

This might be my favourite episode. You always see like the bravery and courage of humans in the face of adversity in shows like this, but this shows the exact opposite and how a bit of fear and paranoia can bring out the absolute worst in people.

Fantastic episode. It's a real masterclass in how you build tension and terror. I also love that Donna's having a spa day - she so deserves one. And the Doctor's face at the end when Donna repeats him is priceless. And yep, that was Colin Morgan (Merlin) as Jethro, well spotted, Jules. :)

It's a really powerful moment in the end there, where they take one of the more fun running gags of the series (the companion trying an accent or manner of speech and the Doctor replying "No, no, don't do that. Never do that") and turn it into something tragic.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." -- Agent Kay, Men in Black And this episode is a perfect exploration of how much dumb, panicky, dangerous animals like humans can be more terrifying monsters than any Dalek.

A unique episode that's often referred to among the greats. Pure writing and human drama, no reliance upon special effects. Also an episode that sets up children with an easy way to emulate the monster and scare their friends! :D

This is one of the best episodes! One of the ones I always go back to. Also a rare occasion where the Doctor doesn't know what he encountered. Also, love your shirt!

I have a lot of friends who don't like this episode, and I can understand them: it's not as energetic, it doesn't have a visible monster that the Doctor heroically defeats, and it's just unusual for DW... But personally, I think this episode is one of the best in the whole series. It's just an incredible atmosphere - I get goosebumps every time! And the main "villain" here is not a typical monster, but ordinary people and their worst (but soooo realistic) qualities. Amazing story!

@@julesreacts Story-wise, yes, Donna's still getting over the mental trauma of finding out her kids and husband weren't real. Production-wise, it's a common thing in Dr who to have a Dr-centric episode that usually films alongside a companion-centric episode which airs somewhere else in the season, to cut down filming time, and so both lead actors don't fall over from exhaustion by having to be front and centre every episode.

I absolutely love this episode, it's one of my favourites. Love the horror vibe it has, especially since we don't even see the Midnight creature, it gives it an extra level of scariness. I love all of Doctor Who, but when it has horror themed episodes (Midnight, Blink, Vashta Nerada, The Impossible Planet/Satan's Pit), those are the ones that i adore.

What's so good about this episode was that the story relied entirely on everyone else's interpretation of what the monster could be. No one knows what it looked like and they couldn't reason with it because it was just copying. It showed the truth of human survival. And the doctor was powerless because he couldn't relate by not being human, for the first time his intelligence became a negative for him.

This episode definitely proves the saying, “We fear what we don’t understand.” I’ve always thought that Skye/Creature was amplifying everyone’s fears, because when Skye/Creature mentioned that you could feel it in your mind, that it was adding to the voices in their heads, or making them louder, kind of like when everyone was talking at once, which was really unsettling and uncomfortable. IMO.

It's easily the darkest episode of this season. And unusually dark and scary for a Russell T Davies script specifically. Of course, there are several notable character actors in it, including the guy you mentioned. The most important to Doctor who history is David Troughton (the Professor) son of 2nd Doctor actor Patrick Troughton, and he also appeared in two stories in early classic Who including a small part in his dad's finale story.
