Martha is always reduced as the companion who fancied the Doctor. When in reality she is one of the companions that did the most for the Doctor. She supported him (even financially) several times and she is one of the companions that faced so much adversity and several times the Doctor kinda took it for granted. She deserved better and I really love how at the end she realized she is worth so much more.

And his death... after living forever what more could you ask for than a peaceful quiet death, finally reunited with an old friend? GOD. I love it so much. for as awful as Martha got it with so much of her characterization reduced to "has a crush on the Doctor"--I LOVE their goodbye. I can really feel the Doctor feeling/realizing that yes, he overlooked her, and just having a lot of respect for who she is... He knew immediately she was leaving. And she didnt go quietly, she left finally giving the Doctor her mind without any resentment. Just, beautiful.

Fun Fact from Classic Who: In the story The Mind of Evil, we get to see what The Master's greatest fear is, and it is actually a vision of The Doctor (Three at the time) hovering over him with absolute power. So in this episode, he got to experience that very fear.

I don't know if it was in the version you watched, but there is a scene that was cut from the UK version (for some reason) where Martha's mum picked up the gun and pointed it at the Master after time reversed, where she contemplated shooting the master for all the suffering. The Doctor took the gun away and it somehow ended up in the hands of the Master's wife. I can't remember why they cut it later on but it WAS in the original airing.

One thing that actually jars me rewatching this is how cheery the doctor is at the end. Yet again he's brought a bunch of suffering down on the people close to him (this time an entire YEAR of being tortured) and he just... moves on. People like the Master's wife who might never recover don't even appear to be on his radar. The shot with the hand and the ring was an homage to the end of Flash Gordon (the good version, with the Queen music and BRIAN BLESSED). RTD openly said afterwards that he didn't have any plans to follow up on it, he just left it as a useable plot hook for a future writer who wanted to bring the Master back (because like the Daleks or Joker in Batman, no-one seriously believes it when it happens).

In my opinion the best twist/reveal in all of Doctor Who. It makes a lot of sense because how could The Face Of Boe know something that takes place literally hundreds of trillions of years after him? And also know to give the clue "You Are Not Alone" for Professor YANA considering all the people who knew he was a Time Lord were his Assistant, Martha, The Doctor and Jack? It had to be Jack and the fact that not a one of us put it together in that episode shows how good they were at making Boe and Jack's personalities so different to throw us all off. Also, just my theory, ever since this reveal, I've believed The Face Of Boe being taken care of by cat women was a dirty joke and another clue the whole time. Even as a billions of years old floating head Jack is still surrounded by pussy.

@noobishnemo6745Ай бұрын
There are absolutely no spoilers in this comment. It is safe to read :) You absolutely need to watch the short episode Time Crash. No spoilers, but it takes place between this episode and the next episode (Voyage of the Damned). It's absolutely brilliant, and only a couple minutes long. You mentioned all the episodes link together in some way and you are absolutely right. Russell is very good about connecting individual stories into an long term season arc. It's where he shines. He is the master (no pun intended) of dropping subtle hints and one off lines that don't pay off until episodes of even seasons later. He sometimes has a tendency to get in his own way and write himself into corners, but RTDs first run is just overall so good. As for your questions: The master wanted to start a war with the rest of the universe. He wanted to start a new Time Lord empire with himself at the center of it. The Master is the antithesis of The Doctor. He is driven by greed, rage, and power. He's also been driven insane by a lifetime of drumming in his head. His motivations are purely selfish and born out of a desire to conquer. Nothing more. Jack was called the Face of Boe because he hails from the Boshane Peninsula. He was the first ever person to be selected for the Time Agency, so the people from there gave him the name, because they see him as the face of the Boshane Peninsula. There's a line about this in the same scene I think you just missed. The Toclafane are not evolved, The Master created them. The Master tricked the future humans into going to Utopia so he could torture and turn them into the Toclafane. He needed an army that could easily conquer and occupy a planet, so he made them. The gun was always a red herring. It was fake, and meant to cause The Master to focus his attention on worrying about a chemical gun so he'd miss what was really happening.

Reminder that there's nearly 50 years of show before this. And human organizations like Torchwood and UNIT, who have known about the Doctor and in some cases were opposed to him, have existed the entire time. The idea of a human made weapon that can permanently kill a Time Lord isn't that odd. Also, reminder that Time Lords have minor telepathic powers. The ending feels kinda cheesy power-of-friendship nonsense, until second or third watching. The Doctor harnessing the telepathic field that The Master had set up to control the world to fuel his regenerative powers. It makes some loose sci-fi kind of sense.

At the end - the ring falling and being picked up.... I swear I heard Ming the Merciless laughing (Flash Gordon - 1980) I had been aching for weeks not saying anything to not spoil the realization moment - witnessing it was cathartic for me, thank you for sharing. Tom Ellis as/in Lucifer -- Chef's Kiss (applies to the whole cast and writing as well)

The Face of Boe thing goes two ways. Jack is from Boeshane Peninsula, but it is also abit of a pun. Boe is pronounced 'beau', which is french for a male beauty (the male version of belle). So, he is the poster boy of Boeshane Peninsula and he is the face of beauty.
