You can tell that Stephen Moffat was the father of young children when he wrote this: he takes a classic childhood fear - the fear of the dark - and weaponises it by turning it into a Doctor Who monster. A classic episode of nu-Who - and one that emphasises Donna's compassion so beautifully.
@suntannedduck2388

I find this approach better of this era of even many S5+ episodes, than S14 or new S1 of a childhood understanding but they make it still great with all these details, many the current lacks and also for a teen/adult audience these older stories present so much besides the childhood fear.

Most Moffat monsters are based on primal fears. It's brilliant to anthropomorphize fear like this. And most of the time, we won't even see the thing we fear at all, just know that it is there.

The squareness gun is what Captain Jack had back when we first meet him in series one. The Doctor substitutes it for a banana from the banana groves that replaced the weapons factory that made it. This library (the main circle room) was Swansea’s real library. It closed down however and moved locations. This episode was filmed during the moving process but all the books had been removed. So all the books on the shelves are just files with fancy covers on them. The building is now an art school. I remember being 5 years old and in awe of the grandeur of the library on my very first visit. I adored it there. Also the steps with the balcony where the doctor and donna first end up is the Brangwyn Hall which is a big music venue in Swansea. It has been the venue for MANY episodes of doctor who ❤

I think what makes Doctor Who so good at being scary when it wants to be, even though it's absurd and silly and a bit camp most of the time, is that the writers understand the roots of a fear. Like how people who are "scared of the dark" (which included me when I first watched this episode as a kid) aren't scared of the dark. We're scared of what could be *in* the dark. This show *gets* that. And that's why the Vashta Nerada are one of my favourite aliens created for the modern era of the show (alongside the Ood, though those are a lot less threatening, at least when they're not possessed). "It's what's in the dark. It's what's always in the dark." Never fails to send a little chill up my spine, as does "You can see them sometimes... the dust in sunbeams..." And now you've met the most enigmatic River Song! Who could she be and how does she know The Doctor? Potent questions indeed! This two parter is amazing. The fact that it stands out even in the middle of Series 4, where literally every episode is great, really says a lot. It's definitely one of the writer Steven Moffat's best stories in my opinion. Donna Noble has been saved. Donna Noble has left The Library. Donna Noble has been saved. Donna Noble has left The Library. Donna Noble has been saved. Donna Noble has left The Library... Edit: Also, you've actually seen that "squareness gun" that River Song used to open a hole in the wall for them to escape the swarm-in-a-suit - It's a Sonic Blaster, Captain Jack Harkness had one back when Rose and the 9th Doctor first met him in "The Empty Child."

By the way, distant episode titles can sometimes be spoilers so try to avoid reading episode titles too far in advance. Plus, if you buy DVD box sets, cover artwork can SOMETIMES be a little spoilery, such as showing upcoming monsters or possibly even guest appearances, or even if there's going to be a new Doctor which you may not know about. When you get to season 5, the back/inside of the DVD box set may be a little spoilery, so maybe get hubby to handle this 'dangerous material' for you! LOL 😀 The fact that you REALLY go out of your way to avoid spoilers to such a high degree, is so great and something definitely to mention at the start of your videos as, honestly, it makes the video more appealing knowing you're viewing completely cold and uninformed. I still to this day have trauma from hearing, "Donna Noble has left the library, Donna Noble has been saved" over and over XD Also Alex Kingston was my First Doctor who crush as a kid because of this episode. Something about curly hair just gets me XD This Episode is Golden Moffat Writting tho. The Science behind the scifi concept are so on point in this 2 parter and the best part is that most viewers will accept the sci-fi elements because well its sci-fi and that's just how sci-fi is. But Moffat has done his research and the concepts and Sci Fi elements used are all grounded in real scientific findings. Take for example the Data ghost, which isn't just a sci-fi idea that's real. if you're interested here are some more interesting details on that. Back in the early 2000s researchers were looking over brain activity recorded during operations. if you have ever gone into surgery that requires anaesthesia they will monitor your brain activity to make sure you don't wake up etc. The researchers were looking over these recordings in patients who had died during operations etc and they found recordings that lingered on for up to an hour after their recorded death. These signals were first thought of as just background noise by doctors but when the researchers looked into the recordings they discovered that the recorded "noise" was in fact remnants of the brain's electrical activity looping around and around growing weaker and weaker as if a turbine was spooling down until it ultimately stops. The researchers were able to take this data and extract remnants of memories from the deceased patients in the operating room. They did this by comparing the recorded data of the dead patients with the patients that didn't die as well as new patients whom they questioned and surveyed after surgery. What they found was that the brain patterns recorded by patients recalling the operating room matched closely the brain patterns recorded in the people who died up to 20 minutes after death. This research along with many others has aided in doctors having a better understanding of what officially classes a dead person so they can know when to stop trying to revive and more importantly when not to give up. These findings and research were being talked about at the time on the news and stuff so I have a feeling Moffat might have been inspired by it to write it into this episode. This is the reason I love Moffat's writing and am inspired all the time to be as good a writer as he is. The library right at the beginning was Swansea library in South Wales. Sadly it doesn't exist as a library anymore it's been turned into student accommodation, it was lovely inside. This two-parter is one of my favourites.

Long time watcher, first time commenter. And here we are! My absolute favourite story in all of NuWho. Everything from writing to acting to musical score hits so perfectly and it's the first time we get some big questions asked that carry on into later series. Super glad to share your first experience with this truly 10/10 story.

_Maybe_ my favourite two-parter. It's got a great monster, a really fun sci-fi premise and of course, River Song. There's also that frisson of melancholy under all the funny and flirty and running that marks the best 'Doctor Who' episodes IMO. Plus, it's a story about stories and i'm a sucker for those.

Actually, I've just remembered something else. Donna *is* dead and so is The Doctor since his first incarnation. Teleportation doesn't move something, it copies something and deletes the original like a file on a computer or USB.

I’m not afraid of the dark, I’m afraid of things in the dark. Or so I once was. One of the negative/positive aspects of an over active imagination. My brain would fathom all the foulest things in the dark, but then I learned or trained myself to think that I could be completely wrong and there could be awesome things in the dark too. Much like life in the deepest depths of the ocean, there are what could be classically called monsters, but there is also such fantastic amazing examples of life, and the kicker is they are often the same creature or plant. Thinking on that was something that really took away my apprehension over what may lurk in the shadows. In any case yeah, the fear of the dark is primal. Probably why fire was such a big deal. Two of the greatest and earliest inventions by man, fire and comedy and I’m fairly certain that comedy must have had come first. I am getting off on a tangent, but you know me Jules, I do that. Anyway, love this two parter, it’s got just the right amount of fear and pathos, and a tiny bit of humour. the first part of it sent me on a quest to find a journal not unlike River’s TARDIS themed one, I am sad to say while have seen many that are close, I have never found any that are perfect, at least, not within my price range.
@julesreacts

A TARDIS journal would be amazing. It was so perfect looking, too. I admire the people who have the talent to make those sorts of props, and make them just so PERFECTLY worn that it's delightful to behold. It really is an art! I actually love the thought of there being awesome things in the dark, too. I don't know if it will work to make me feel better, but let's hope 🤣

Prop recreation artists are insanely talented, especially those who also employ their talents to cosplay. I’ve seen some cosplays based on a single episode of a show where the character wore an outfit only once, and from freeze framing the pictures of it seen on tv, fully recreated it down to the smallest details with their own improv on details not seen, but fitting them together beautifully.
