I always thought the reveal that the Dream Lord is just the embodiment of the Doctors negative thoughts is so good. And it makes perfect sense as not only is there a lot of darkness in the Doctor but it's been clear for a long time that deep down the Doctor does sadly hate himself. After all what does the Doctor say to the Dream Lord when he works out that he is himself? "there's only one person in the universe that hates me as much as you"

The doctor may be a hero, and his actions may have been the best option at the time, but they are still guilty of genocide against his own people (and many others). And being a deeply moral person, it will take them a long time to truly accept that their actions were the best of the options at the time.

He didn't say that he was one of his greatest enemies. He said only one person in the universe hates the Doctor as much as the Dream Lord. Which is to say, nobody hates the Doctor more than the Doctor hates himself.

You have to remember that the Doctor still feels some guilt over the Time War, so there is a degree of self-loathing. Also, there are moments when his darker side shows its face over the show's 60+ years. That's why it's possible for the Doctor to hate himself more than even the Master, for instance.

Fun fact: Bow ties sales increased over *90%* after the Matt Smith era started airing!! 😅🤭 (At first I wanted to say 400% or 200%, because that's what I remember hearing. But I don't remember where or when I heard that or who said it. So I went with the first number I could find by googling the question. Either way, Doctor Who did have a noticable influence on that industry! 👍)

A note on costuming. Both Tennant and Smith have costume differences based on whether the episode is set in the past or the future. Tennant had a brown suit in episodes set in the past and a blue suit if the episode was set in the future. In a similar vein Smith wears a red bowtie in the future episodes and blue in the past episodes. However the colouration is flipped in this episode as a subtle meta hint that something isn't right.

"There's only one person in the universe that hates me as much as you do" It's actually one of my favorite lines in the episode, it shows so much about The Doctor's character I think because of the nature of his travels and his enemies, The Doctor has a lot of dark thoughts and dark sides of himself that he doesn't like, or he thinks make him a bad person. Additionally, throughout his travels, he's lost a lot of good people or had people sacrifice themselves in his name, which obviously weighs pretty heavily on his conscience
@dargron7614
@dargron7614 Күн бұрын
It makes a lot of sense. The Doctor has a massive ego. He thinks of himself as the cleverest being in the universe. He's willing to dive headlong into dangerous situations with no plan, because he takes for granted that he can figure out a solution to any problem along the way. That logically means he also blames himself for every failure - every innocent death and every evil species that he wasn't able to spare weighs heavily on his conscience and he blames himself for, because his ego demands he should have been clever enough to find a way to prevent it.

This is probably my favorite episode of Matt Smith's first series. The writing is SO good in this episode, and the "Dream Lord" is such a great "villain" and Toby Jones is INCREDIBLE in this. His dialog is so good, and his delivery is *chefs kiss* as they say. And of course, while it's about "Amy's choice" between Rory and the Doctor, in the end it's all about the Doctor and his negative thoughts/persona etc. Really fun, very well made and just straight up one of the best episodes of S5.

This one never seemed important until it's realized this is Amy's turning point, realizing her dedication to Rory and not the Doctor. (To a degree.) Amy willing to die if Rory isn't a part of her world... like one can only wish for a love like that.

The colour of the doctors tie actually changes all the time. Usually, it's red when the episode takes place in the future or present day, and blue when the episode takes place in the past. Look at previous episodes, and you'll notice the same thing. In this particular episode, however, it's flipped to blue tie in the future and red tie in the past in order to throw the viewer off.

I'm glad to see you've uploaded this episode, I really needed cheering up today and this is by far my favourite episode of season 5. The concept is so interesting and keeps you guessing about what's real or not. The dangers in both worlds were very plausible in the Doctor Who universe so it was very tricky to tell. Not to mention, the Dream Lord was a very entertaining villain. His jabs at the Doctor and his Christmas cracker styled jokes made him both entertaining and someone you love to hate! When Amy told the Doctor "then what is the point in you!" hit hard as it showed the Doctor that he's not all powerful, and that every day people matter more than he realises. It was also the moment Amy realised what she really wanted. And who wouldn't want Rory, he's adorable! Glad this episode gave you food for thought 💚

Been waiting for this one! :D I also suspected the Master the first time I watched, but having it be the dark side of the Doctor was ultimately more satisfying. It's interesting how he brings up subjects not frequently mentioned such as the fact that he never visits his past companions (a topic last touched upon in School Reunion, although he did recently have his "reward" visits in The End of Time) or reveals his name (River Song being the exception). Some say Amy was being reckless killing herself like that (especially being nearly full term pregnant, and taking the Doctor with her) but I like to think that once one of them died it broke down the "programming" and made them all slowly realize that they're dreaming (which is why the Doctor was so quick to blow up the TARDIS afterwards). Thanks again for allowing us all to relive these episodes with you!

I like it how the new writing digs more into the Doctor's layers, they reveal more twisted substrates. The idea of some alien spores messing with your head is not new here, it has been portrayed into some older stuff, but the way this was put into the scene here is absolutely wonderful. And, of course, this is more character development for the Doctor's companions which works hand in hand with their important relationship with the Doctor. The show will keep getting better, oh yeaah :D

In interview the scriptwriter for this episode mentioned how much fun it was to be doing a script that let him write things like "The postman crumbles to dust". The thing that always struck me about this episode is that it kind of shows the Doctor being manipulative and somewhat sinister without putting it front and centre or even calling attention to it at all; he'd started to work out what was going on very early on when he figured out who the dream lord was, and clearly had the full picture before Amy made her choice, but intentionally sat on it to make sure she'd come to her realization. the 11th is surprisingly ruthless at times.

"There's only one person who hates me as much as you." Not only did the Doctor know who the Dream Lord was by that point, or at least an idea, it shows an interesting insight into his mentality, considering the Dream Lord turned out to be a sort of version of the Doctor himself.

To be fair, we should be the ones thanking you for these reactions. Just like the Doctor sees the universe in a new way through the eyes of whatever companion they're currently with, those of us who are rewatching these episodes alongside you get to see them with a fresh perspective. As for the comment the Doctor made about the Dream Lord being his worst enemy, and without spoiling anything to come, the Doctor IS over 900 years old, and a lot can (and does) happen in that span of time. Also: "Rory! I've crushed your flowers." "Oh. Amy will kill you."

LOL, J-Bird getting the story right from the start without even knowing it, "this is a dream come true." Spot on ace! I get that Amy was upset when she said "what's the point of you," but that always left a bad taste in my mouth, because she was blaming others for the fact that she never took the time to tell the man who was always faithful to her that she loved him. Considering that she was angry with her indecision before being forced to make one makes it hard to hear her give the doctor crap for not changing things to fit her needs just seemed like a lot.

I was wondering whether Jules had the same suspicion I did about the identity of the Dream Lord being a regenerated Master. I thought that myself in my first go with this story; and the twist took me for a loop, being the dark spirit of the Doctor. I'm glad she admitted that in her epilogue, as that had to be something no Whovian could fail to suspect. I have to say, seeing her input throughout the stories really brings up fresh emotional perspectives that I had not felt for a long time. That's what makes her the only reviewer on YT that I watch.

My biggest beef with this episode is around 9:03 "not like that." Except, ya know, when they went back to her bedroom on that very same night and she spent as many minutes literally trying to get the doctor into her bed. 21:24 We've seen shades of the doctor when he lets himself go. Christmas Night with the Raknos, where he nearly let himself die and it was only because of Donna that he stopped himself, or prior to that in Dalek when 9 went on his incredible rant against the last Dalek "Why don't you just DIE!"... or that moment he nearly murdered that soldier in The Doctor's Daughter... and of course... Timelord Victorious in Waters of Mars. The Doctor has a growing darkness in him.... and yeah, I can absolutely imagine that his darker aspects have a great deal of self loathing. All the people he has lost, or feels he let down. All the failures. Time marches on, even for a Time Lord. 21:48 The Master isn't a bad call, actually. Again, going back to The Doctor's darker side... In Waters of Mars, 10 actually says a line that the classic Master was known for "They will obey me!" (in reference to the laws of time.) OG Master would often say "You will obey me." So... Doctor's dark side is very much like his fellow Timelord, in that regard. This one is a fun mix up of the formula. It's a ticking clock, with a twist.

This is good timing because Karen Gillan (Amy) has just announced her pregnancy. This is one of my favourite episodes of the season, not only does it have an interesting premise, but it plays a crucial part in Amy's character development. Up until now she'd lived her life caught up in the fairy tale of the Doctor, never fully committing to her real life and allow him to whisk her away. However, this right here is the point that she comes back down to reality and realises what she really wants - Rory. The Dream Lord is a great villain, and yes, he's essentially the Doctor's own self-hatred. He's played by Toby Jones, who you'd recognise from a lot of TV and movies. He even voiced Dobby in Harry Potter. It was a great catch with the bow tie, but yeah, there's nothing suspicious about it. Throughout Season 5 he alternates between a red bow tie/shirt/braces combo, and a blue. Just like the Tenth Doctor, his costume has a few variants. I'm glad you liked this one Jules, I can't wait for the next.

Don’t despair about not guessing ‘it’s a dream’- you are one of the quicker people I’ve seen to guess the ‘both scenarios are dreams’ so you have that! I’m not sure how consistently they managed to do this, but I know early on in Matt Smith’s time as the Doctor they tried to give him a blue bow tie if the episode was set in the past. The time vortex is shown in blue when the TARDIS is travelling back in time and red when going forward in time, so it was supposed to be a little reference to that. Not sure if a dream counts as past or future though. Amy and Rory are adorable together. My opinion on their relationship after this episode was that most of their issues came from the fact that they were just in slightly different places mentally- Rory is ready to settle down and probably has been for a while. Amy isn’t quite there yet- she loves Rory, but she’s he lifetime commitment of actually marrying him has her getting cold feet and she was unsure how much of that was due to ‘getting married’ and how much of that was ‘getting married to Rory specifically’. Finding out via murder by aliens in a dream is an odd way to have that internal question answered, but I’m glad it seemed to work!

I didn't notice the ties until I edited the next episode! I have started editing next weeks episode and I mention the ties in the beginning and how I failed to notice that he wore different ones 😅 I don't know the significance yet, but maybe it will be explained or maybe it's not even a big deal. Amy and Rory ARE so lovely!! I was actually really happy to see her settled and pregnant. Hopefully one day it's not just a dream 🥰

About the bow tie thing, im fairly certain that 11 has a similar quirk to 10 where their clothes reflects whether or not they are forward or backwards in time. If you look back on Davids era, he had a different suit for historical episodes than when hes in the future. I believe its the same with Matts bow ties

I didn't notice after several re-watches that The Doctor's bow-tie is just some wardrobe department/script writing continuity. Just like the time vortex in the intro turning red when the camera pans around and the TARDIS double backs through the past.

Just rolling with it and not asking too many questions is a good policy when it comes to watching Doctor Who sometimes ;) This was one of those episodes where it was always going to be fun seeing your reactions both of confusion and realisation, especially near the end. The Doctor carrying a lot of self-loathing is something that's a part of his character in this era at least (I'm not sure if it's come up much otherwise) and I guess is just a part of how Moffat sees the Doctor, just as Nine and Ten were Davies' interpretations. The Master is the most obvious candidate for the Dream Lord's identity at first, though the more you think about it and get to understand the Doctor/Master relationship the less likely that seems and I think the route they went with is far more interesting.

This episode is such a great character study giving conflict with what Rory wants from life and their current path, A deeper look into amy and her relationship with the doctor and rory but most tragically a look at the doctor and how he views himself most brutally when you look at the line "only one person in the universe who hates me as much as you do".

It's a good point, but it's not actually true. Why? Because we only find out at the end of the episode that the Dream Lord is, himself, a dream. Until then, we assume he's a real being, so of course he can exist in the real world.

I think Amy had the wrong life but the right person before her wedding. She was unhappy, but not with Rory, but as her wedding got closer, she started thinking, "I don't want this." Amy is still very young to get married and settle down. She's twenty-one years old. (Seven plus twelve plus two.) She got panicky and misattributed her panic. It was easy because she's known Rory for forever. He's essentially her high school sweetheart and then some. He was always around, always devoted to her, and she kinda took him for granted. Dating him made sense, marrying him made sense. Of course. Why not? But due to the nature of the dynamic, she never really had the time to consider a life without him or appreciate what she had. And unlike pre- development Mickey (post-development Mickey is a different story, though I still think he's wrong for Rose), what she had was actually awesome. This episode gives Amy the clarity to realize this. Another fun character note? Amy does want a more exciting life than the one she grew up in. She wants to have adventures and implicitly felt stifled by the settled life she felt Rory wanted (and that maybe Rory thought he wanted too). But when Rory feels secure in his relationship with Amy, he's actually okay with whatever she wants to do. He holds so tightly to "settled" not because he actually really wants it so very badly but because he craves stability with Amy. I think if Amy hadn't tried to perform happiness and normalcy with him before this, he probably would have worked with her to try and find a life that satisfied her. I love the Doctor's fond observation of the two, "All the darkness in you two? It'd starve to death!" He really, really likes Amy and Rory.

This is my favourite episode of this season! As much as I might have preferred a larger role in this show for Toby Jones, he absolutely kills it as The Dream Lord! And who knows (hehe, *WHO* knows indeed), we did see a flash of him in the reflection when The Doctor looked down at the Tardis console - maybe this isn't the last of him. This came out right before Chris Nolan's Inception released, too! Yet another case of Doctor Who beating cinema to the punch on big ideas! I love stories about dreams, and that make you question what is and isn't real! This is the episode that really made me feel the connection between Amy and Rory - not that I hadn't seen it before, but I just love how Amy made her choice about which world she wanted the instant Rory wasn't in hers any more. Great stuff.

23:14 we have to remember, the doctor may be wonderful, but at the end of the day, he destroyed all the Time Lords alongside millions if other creatures. I keep saying this, but Jules NEEDS to watch the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie. Not only because it allows her to cover one whole regeneration in one episode, but because there will be a reference to the 8th Doctor in a later episode which will be a lot more satisfying if she's seen his episode.

Sometimes the Doctor is his own worst enemy - that's how I interpret his comment about the Dreamlord. Might sound odd but in general I like the self-loathing we see here - as we've seen highlighted in previous series, especially S4, while he rarely kills, the Doctor has been "involved in the deaths of" _lots_ of beings, Amy's dead wrong when she says he always saves people. A good person _should_ have trouble living with that, regardless of how many people he's _saved_ too.

I mean a lot of people use the idiom "a dream come true" without meaning it in a literal sense. Seems she meant it figuratively. Also the "it was just a dream" trope is used so much in media and literature that one of the first things most lecturers will tell you is that unless you can put a new spin on it, it is a cliche for a reason. Jules has also watched a lot of Buffy and they use this trope in a number of episodes.

This is my first time watching Doctor Who! I also get lots of things wrong, if you've watched a few of my other videos. I was surprised to find out that this episode is not loved by everyone, because I adore it. It's such a perfect marrying of the "physical threat" main plot, with the emotional subplot. And such a touching moment for Rory and Amy. I love the twist that the Dream Lord is the Doctor, though I would have liked to have seen the Doctor delivering this shocking revelation actually in the PRESENCE of the Dream Lord. If I'd written it, I would have done the reveal about the Dream Lord's identity first, THEN the reveal that they're still in a dream second, which I think would have been more dramatic. I would also have made the "we're still in a dream" much more shocking. So, if anyone's interested, here's how I would have written the ending of this episode… • Firstly, the Doctor DOESN'T suspect who the Dream Lord is early on. This is a huge mystery to all, which doesn't make sense as the Doctor can't work out what kind of species he could be. The Doctor's biggest obsession throughout the episode is figuring out the mystery of who the Dream Lord is. • At the end of the episode when they wake up in the frozen TARDIS (apparently real life), the Doctor and the Dream Lord have a final confrontation based around questioning of who the Dream Lord is and where he came from. • The Doctor starts to figure out the that the Dream Lord isn't a real person, but he's only a dream himself. The Dream Lord says "Have you ever heard of a waking dream, Doctor? This is indeed the real world, however, I am not." • The companions and the Doctor then ponder: if the Dream Lord is only a dream then where is his power coming from? His identity? His will? His determination? How is he controlling everything? This leads to something of a heated interrogation between the Doctor and the Dream Lord. • After a highly emotional exchange, full of anger and pain, the Doctor breaks down on the floor, confessing to the companions that he knows who the Dream Lord is - himself. • And this point, the Dream Lord "lifts his mask" and shows he's really the Doctor. The Doctor is still lying on the floor, shaken, refusing to even look at the Dream Lord. • The Dream Lord - now looking like the Doctor - becomes very calm and quiet, confessing: "Yes, I am you. Or rather, a part of your psyche. A part you choose to ignore because you can't face me. Even now." • With his identity revealed, the Dream Lord looks "at peace", says farewell to the group, and vanishes, never to return again. • The three characters let out a collective sigh, exhausted at what they've been through. Rory starts clearing up the mess in the TARDIS while Amy consoles the Doctor, still on the floor… Amy (looking around): "We've got a LOT of clearing up to do." The Doctor: "Oh, I'm good at straightening this place up. I do it a lot!" Amy (giving the Doctor a penetrating look): I wasn't talking about the TARDIS! • We then cut to a new scene. Doctor and companions are seen in a completely different location, somewhere very different to the dreams, standing in a busy town center with people everywhere. • The companions are reflecting on the fact that a part of the Doctor's psyche is so negative and dark. I think this is a really important point to dwell on, and for them to ask him about. They plow him with questions about himself, his nature, his history… his name. Too many questions, really. • The Doctor nods his head and says "Come…" beckoning them to follow him. The companions think the Doctor is going to give them answers. They get into a lift and go up, but the Doctor begins to explain about how the Dream Lord made everything too easy for them. • The Doctor takes them to the top of a tall building and challenges them: "The Dream Lord said he was a 'waking dream'. A _waking dream?_ Which we _all saw?_ Think about it. Is that possible in REAL LIFE?" All the pieces click together. • With a LOT of faith and courage, the three run to the edge and jump. As soon as they leap, we cut to black, as we hear the distant sound of birds tweeting. The end.

Hello, Jules.💜 I wonder why you have such a loyal following? Could it be that your reactions are so genuine, thoughtful, and on point? Yeah, I think it is, all of those and more. Honest, heartfelt, and welcoming... that's you, and your video library. 💖 This episode. The Dream Lord, the depths of the Doctor's psyche. The one who comes out more often when the Doctor travels alone? I always enjoy this episode, as the story begins, and seemingly involves all 3, but then the twist - Amy's Choice, which is the point all along. 🥰 My own opinion, as ever, the psychic pollen, loosens the mind, and deep down in his subconscious, unawares, the Doctor has been a bit disgruntled with Amy's "my boys" attitude, and from those depths comes this dual scenario, which, in the end, reveals to Amy, her truest feelings, and it is her choice which finally awakens the Doctor to the realization of what is actually going on, allowing him to restore normality once again. 🤔 There are many funny lines in this one, mainly as the Doctor gets a bit flustered getting further and further from controlling the situations, and as he gets more on edge, his sarcastic nature comes to the fore. Rory however, shows his character honesty, as he is basically the same through both the worlds - brave, and loyal, always doing what's best for Amy, regardless of the situation. Still a bit of a doofus, but always there for Amy. 🥲 The most revealing to me, is Amy's line, "Then what is the point of You?" 😨 Which I think shows a bit of her deepest thoughts. She is always bold, never listens, does exactly what she wants, and why, well she's Scottish 🤭, but because she takes the Doctor for granted. He will always put things right in the end, so she can act on whims alone, always assured of her absolute safety. And You, Jules? I know the first time I saw this episode it never occurred to me, but you - always thinking - 15:57 - You are Brilliant - and make the call - Neither! Excellent. Also quick to notice the bow tie colors - not everyone does. 🥰🥰🥰 With you even taking time for some self analysis, at 22:20, contemplating your go-to explanation of "this can't be real. It's a Dream" and realizing you never fully had that feeling in this one. It was as if the episode had you dreaming, too! 🙌👏🙌 And, I have to add, I was waiting for your reaction at the end... "Waaiit. Got a few things to say about that... " 🤣 Excellent episode, so many great things. Entrancing story, great, rapid-fire dialogue, twists, turns, character development, and more. Most excellent editing as well, on your part! Well done! 😉 Have a quiet Thursday, Jules.💜🤗💜 Create, and spend your time with enjoyable things. Have an extra coffee, and a side of peace. 🤗 Looking forward to what's next! 💖

Tom 🤗💜 it is always wonderful to read your words. Always thoughtful, respectful and you often give me new perspectives to think about. Thank you, very much. I will make a confession about the bow ties... I do talk about them in 2 episodes time (quite a lengthy discussion, in the intro), but when I first watched this episode, I noticed the blue bow tie and knew something was off. He doesn't wear blue - he wears red. Imagine to my surprise when I edited the next episode and noticed he was indeed wearing BLUE. So I have a bit to say about that, eventually 😅 I feel slightly embarrassed that I didn't notice for so long into the series. They shouldn't make each episode so exciting, it's not my fault 😜 I really, really enjoyed this episode. The ending was perfect. I feel so satisfied with Amy and Rory - I do love a good romance, and those two make a wonderful couple. I couldn't be happier that she finally decided, and saw Rory through fresh eyes. He's a lovely chap, very genuine, and he adores Amy. Sigh 🥰 I might pass on your offer of an extra coffee, only because I know it might send me a bit wide-eyed at 11pm 🤣 Maybe I'll have a hot chocolate instead... Thank you again, Tom 😊💜
