The woman that keeps showing up is Susan Twist, Mrs Flood is played by Anita Dobson so they are different characters.

My take on the timey wimey stuff. At first in the 'broken circle' timeline the Doctor mentions Roger Ap Gwilliam (Mad Jack) as a bad Prime Minister, because he has knowledge of how the future plays out in that timeline.Then the circle is broken, Ruby reads the notes and Mad Jack is released, insuring that future comes to pass. Mad Jack maybe one of the Pantheon of Gods (perhaps the Spiteful one) and removes the Doctor from the timeline. When Old Ruby (73 yards woman) circles back around in the timeline to 2024 she prevents the Doctor from breaking the circle, making sure Mad Jack was never released/born creating a new (Unbroken Circle) timeline. Which is why the old lady disappears. The Doctor mentions Roger Ap Gwilliam but this one was never possessed by Mad Jack. Why everyone runs away from Ruby (the old lady). in The Giggle special, the Toymaker says to the Doctor (at the card game) that he met the One Who Waits and ran from him. Some sort of connection there maybe?

RTD actually gave a pretty good explanation for this episode. "Mad Jack" felt 'disrespected' and angry that the Doctor broke his grave/circle, so the entity erased/killed him, locked/killed the Tardis, and forced ruby to live a life of her worst fear and anxiety, always being abandoned. However, the entity forgave them both when Ruby not only didn't give up, but decided to use it to save the world and do something good. Its very much a more fantasy story instead of a sci-fi timey-wimey story. I think they should have put a little tiny bit more explanation about forgiving them or it being a punishment or something though.

The episode was well constructed and engaging. The ending felt very vague and confusing though. I don't mind a few unanswered questions but I think this was too far into the deep end. It did remind me of other media. The corrupted timeline which needed fixed made me specifically think of Donnie Darko. I could see comparisons to other tv shows, such as the Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected. Although I only caught bits of it, the near future political stuff feels a lot like 'Years and Years'. I think it is implied the Doctor ran away from Ruby just like the other people who encounter the mystery woman. IMO it would have worked better if we'd heard the Tardis door slam shut in the background as Ruby examines the circle. I can only hope later episodes will give us a bit more context about why the time loop happened at all.

I dont know about the hand gestures and why exactly 73 yards, but i do have other theories. Where did the doctor go: he was the one who broke the fairy circle, so maybe his disappearance was a type of punishment. And why didnt Ruby disappear? She was the one who took the scroll about Mad Jack and read it, so taking down the PM had become her mission alone, although she didnt know it yet. Why did the woman make everyone hate Ruby: I feel like it was a defence mechanism, coz nothing should hamper Ruby's mission of dethroning the PM. If Unit, for example, successfully intervened and captured the woman, Ruby would have never been able to deal with the PM. So, its like: you try to approach her or talk to her, then you are repelled by her and driven away from Ruby, so that Ruby's mission can be completed without impediments or distractions. Nobody tried to approach the woman after Ruby dealt with the PM, so we don't know if this theory holds. The episode occured in an alternate timeline. And in that timeline, Ruby stopped the PM. When the timeline is reset in the final scene, Ruby does not live a life where she will stop the PM, so it isnt a paradox. Her original timeline is restored. In the final scene, the doctor again tells Ruby that the PM will "led the world to the brink of nuclear-". Going by the exact words of the Doctor, the PM will indeed come to power in 2046, but clearly doesn't do any catastrophic damage. He simply acquires the weapons for symbolism. This entire episode was in an alternate timeline and trying to be all meta coz in this alternate timeline, Doctor Who does not have a title sequence.

Great creepy episode. Yes unanswered questions but let’s see how the season pans out. People ran away for a reason, should be connected with the mystery of who ruby is.

I think the series is getting extraordinarily meta and self-referencing. I think Russell is playing a lot with the audience and the nature of fiction. Obviously there's the obvious winking at the camera stuff, but in the devil's chord when Ruby is being taken away by the musical notes, the doctor says " I THOUGHT that music was diegetic ", implying the doctor can always hear the soundtrack at all times. Here Kate Lethbridge Stewart tells us exactly what's going on when she tells Ruby that there's been a whole lot more supernatural going on that can't be fought or explained, and when the human mind is presented which things which can't be explained they start making up rules. And that's exactly what this is, story in which the rules are not explained explanations are not given, and yet the internet is ablaze today with all of us here writing our own explanations. Brilliant. ( And for my classic Who fans, what in the historical Pantheon of Doctor Who villains would make sense to bring back if we're talking about metafictional references and stories coming to life?... 😁)

Really enjoyed this one, but what a disappointing ending. So many unanswered questions and like you say, how did Ruby get back there to warn herself. You’re not being daft at all I was sat thinking… have I missed something? Overall though, best episode of the the series yet. Great concept.
