If you have not noticed, my Doctor Who "The Day of the Doctor" Reaction (Part 1) video got blocked this morning. I disputed the claim and hopefully, everything will work out and the video will be back soon. If not, I have edited a new version of "The Day of the Doctor" reaction, combining both parts into one and that will get released as soon as I get an answer on my blocked video. My (Part 2) reaction is still up but if I get a negative response from the dispute on (Part 1), I will most likely put (Part 2) on private and just upload the new version of my "Day of the Doctor" reaction for you all to enjoy. If you commented on my (Part 1) video (and maybe Part 2), I may not be able to respond to you and if you want me to reply please comment on the new video that will go up just in case my video doesn't come back.

Shayla, an interesting fact: The "I don't want to go" moment was actually something real that happened. This wasn't an invented scene that was written in to play on the viewers heartstrings, it's based on a real event from Hartnel's life. There was a short period of time in William Hartnell's life during the period nearing the end of his tenure, when he knew he was leaving the show, that at home he was sad and would sob and cry, repeatedly saying that "I don't want to go", referring to leaving the show Doctor Who. So when Russell T. Davies wrote this line for Tennant, there is a common myth being pertuated that Tennant said this spontaneously and unscripted, this is false and a myth. Tennant did want to move on from Doctor Who, RTD wrote this line in subtle reference to William Hartnell's quote.

@@wesrumbelow2844 It's a docudrama thing. These were all accounts of people who were there and written information from back then, like notes and diaries. It's not just made up for shits and giggles. What we got from this is very small also, William was a very private person and these snippets into his home life are like treasure, because only his family really knew him off the screen. So it's nice for people to see an actor portraying him and how he was, even if some scenes were sad.

The guns interspersed with the description of the daleks is because they're a Nazi allegory, and when it went out it was only 18 years since the end of WWII. Newman was Jewish and made anti-Nazi propaganda films during the war, so it would have had a particular resonance for him.

The gun is also there to emphasize the assassination of Kennedy. Doctor Who premiered for the very first time the day after the assassination, and was the very first show to come on after the special reports ended. People were so upset and tired of watching television coverage that virtually no one watched it. There is symbolism that this event almost killed Doctor Who before it ever began as well.

I was there, when, the day after Kennedy was shot, the first ever episode of Dr Who appeared on TV. Yes, that episode was repeated the following Saturday, together with the second episode. When I was a kid, there was much fear of WWIII, and I'd guess that many feared that the Kennedy shooting was a prelude to a nuclear war.

Welp, I sure as shit just cried my eyes out YET AGAIN. I remember being so shocked and baffled when Eleven appeared. Then I understood that it was showing how far the show would go, how every actor will have to experience that moment. If I recall correctly this aired before the ep where Eleven regenerates and it was painful af cause we knew what was coming for Matt Smith. David Bradley is such a wonderful actor. I really hope people who've seen him as Walder Frey go ahead and watch Broadchurch and this TV film... so they can see he's not just a gruff/snarky old man. He's funny (Hot Fuzz) and soft and sad and sweet too.
@anonymes28845 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the key thing for me is it's _not_ Eleven. It's Matt Smith that "Hartnell" sees, the actors understanding each other across space and time, carrying on their own sort of legacy. In the UK at least this first aired even before the 50th (in the week before that Saturday). Reactors often watch it after 'Time of...' though which I guess in some ways makes the shot of Smith even more poignant but also maybe slightly loses the point of the first actor to play the role seeing the _current_ actor, still playing it, 50 years on.

It's a testament to how good this docudrama is that you could be so moved by it without having any nostalgic connection to it. Imagine how it felt to those of us who know the classic show! We were a complete mess by the end. That week leading up to Day of the Doctor was brilliant for Who fans, as we got masses of programs devoted to the show and it was a really special time. I'm intrigued to see your journey with the twelfth Doctor, as he's the most challenging to watch. He really does go on a transformative journey over his three years, and he finally became my favourite Doctor by the end.

I think, unlike most shows, Doctor Who is able to fully confront death and change. No other show can kill off the protagonist, replace their friends, change the whole aesthetic, all without alienating the audience. This is literally taking the most compelling person, the Doctor and your familiarity with them and completely subverting that relationship every few years. Although its a fantastical sci-fi this change is actually more authentic to life than most TV shows that inherently play by a different rule book. My favourite Doctor is Peter Capaldi. Unlike Matt Smith the affectations are stripped away and the raw character is revealed. Although initially he seems terse and unlikeable he is probably the most emotionally healthy Doctor. 12 confronts everything the Doctor has been through since the renewed series began and overcomes it to become his truest self

Isn't it a wonderful treat that - while everyone was looking forward to this, I don't think anyone necessarily knew just how good this was going to be. Especially given Gatiss's somewhat patchy series of DW stories, this was an absolutely stunner. Loved your remarks about how the actors must feel when leaving the role. One thing to note here is that for some of the newers actors, they grew up watching this show. David Tennant was a big fan of the show when he was a kid. But Capaldi was in a different league - he used to badger the producers of the show in the seventies, and apparently tried to become head of the fan club. I can't even imagine what emotions he went through playing the role and then departing.

Also, I referee to every Doctor who actor by first and last name apart from Mr Hartnell, the man brought beauty into the world through his role as the Doctor. Thank you for these reactions Shayla I enjoy watching others geek out and see the beauty this show brings to people.

So glad you reacted to and enjoyed this wonderful love letter to the creators of this legendary show - written by Mark Gatiss (Mycroft from Sherlock! amongst many other things). Trust me, once hooked by 'Who' it can stay with you for life! :)

I still don't know why, but scene with Will and Matt still kills me And after all this, we get another heartbreaker :(

Oops.....we should have mentioned the debut of DW was Nov. 23, 1963, the day after President Kennedy was assassinated (in response to your reaction at 5:20). Our bad!

Just an addition to this comment, as others have already mentioned, the scene involving the gunshots have more to do with describing the Daleks, and (with the episodes being shot about two months prior to their airing date) nothing to do with Kennedy's death.

Thank you! I hadn't seen the whole thing before. I wasn't prepared to cry either.

Have you ever seen the reel that David Tennant shot doing “I don’t want to go” line over and over each time with more emotion so in the edit they could pick the one that worked best? It really shows his acting ability.

I ADORE the symbolism of Hartnell seeing Matt, it obviously didn’t happen but it’s more symbolic than anything, it shows that if it had been possible that I think William would’ve been very proud and happy that the legacy HE began continues on to this day

Can’t wait for ur reaction to peter capaldi. (My favourite doctor 😉)

I am glad this game out when it did and Matt Smith was the Doctor. Not sure it would have had the same emotional pop had the William looked over and seen a very cross Peter Capaldi looking back at him. Mind you 12 is my favorite Doctor but still....

“What’s with that gun?” The Daleks reminded him of the nazis, because that’s pretty much what they’re based on

I think the visual cue was supposed to be to the Kennedy assassination that happened the day before the first episode aired (and was thought to have had a negative impact on the viewing figures). The Nazi link is valid, of course, and was even more stark at the time as it was only 18 years since the end of WW2--and so within the lifetimes of all the cast and, indeed, of all adult viewers.

Paul Morris the script he was reading through was written months before JFKs assassination though

hughes645 really? The script he’s reading though that was written months before JFKs assassination, so I’m very impressed if he managed to know about it before it happened.

Hi Shayla, I "enjoyed" your reaction to this docu-drama, as you can guess, it was about my favourite Doctor and the beginning of our favourite program. Several actor/actresses who appeared in Classic Who were in the cast or had cameos. The BBC car park commissionaire for instance was the original "Ian" (William Russell), the actress who was the original Susan (Carole Ann Ford), played the mother calling in her child. The actor portraying the BBC exec with the axe after 4 episodes, (Mark Eden) played Marco Polo in a 1st Dr. story. The original "Polly" (Anneke Wills) was one of the party guests along with the Actress Jean Marsh who played several characters throughout Classic Who. The thing with this wonderful program is, it is a roller coaster of emotions, that in the better moments, you realise you could not do without. It`s always been that way, despite shortages of money etc, it thrived on inventiveness & gave you moments you would not have missed for the world. The whole concept was ahead of it`s time & the BBC found itself trying to hang on to a whirlwind. Once "Dalekmania" occurred in 1964-66, they had an unexpected hit, without the finance to fund it properly. But, the little show that could, kept on pushing boundaries thanks to people like "Verity, Waris, Sydney, Delia, writers such as Douglas Adams, Terry Nation, amazing BBC set creators & other staff". I`m glad you`ve chosen to join the ride, enjoy.

This special was SUCH a good piece of media, even without the history behind what it was showing. But then you look into the history of the show, the lost episodes and the many attempts to recreate or restore the things that have been recovered, and as a history nerd, it's just even more fascinating and special. It's such a big piece of culture, and should definitely be preserved in any way possible for future generations. Yes, it's just a tv show, but it's had such a big impact on British and Global culture that, like any important work of art, it will be important to be able to look back on it even hundreds of years in the future! That whole "I wish I'd never watched this show, but I am SO HAPPY I DID" feeling is so great. You go through so much pain for this show, but in the end, you're happy you did, because there's not much like it. 😭 Also LOL Oh no Time of the Doctor Shayla! That's going to be so painful! Hope you're enjoying series 8! You're almost completely caught up!

I'm glad you enjoyed this. Obviously it's a highly compressed, re-ordered and dramatised version of what happened, but it does give a good little flavour of it, I think.
