Pertwee disguised as a milkman and cleaning lady was great and goofy lol, Pertwee was known as a comedic actor in roles previously before Doctor Who.

7:23 Time to roll out my favourite anecdote about this story! After this episode was broadcast, the producer Barry Letts received a letter which simply read: "The reason I'm writin', is how to say chitin."

7:28 "Chap with the segmented body there. Ten rounds rapid" 7:52 "I'm his da" - as a Welshman rapidly approaching his twilight years, I've never, _ever_ heard of anyone referring to their father as "da". Methinks some stereotypical "stage-Welsh" may have crept into the script at this point ;)

31:00 The talk of Sherlock Holmes makes me want to see you two react to an episode of the Granada Holmes series with Jeremy Brett. Since they were so committed to historical accuracy and Brett is often seen as the top portrayal of the Sherlock character.

Its funny you mention playing Sherlock Holmes because Tom Baker did actually play Sherlock after he left Doctor Who, it was his very next role I believe.

The reason for the switching back and forth between location filming and green screen is because the weather turned very bad during location shooting for this story, with the result that some planned scenes had to be filmed on green screen much later. I'm pretty sure that the green glowing skin is achieved using make-up with similar properties to the reflective paint that is used on street signs, when you shine a light on the paint from behind the camera, it appears to glow. Richard is correct about the pronunciation of chitinous. A waggish fan sent a letter to producer Barry Letts after this story was broadcast which read simply, "The reason I'm writin' is how to say kitin'." A lovely end to Jo's era. The Doctor driving sadly away at the end is a nice touch.
@ftumschk2 жыл бұрын
You're quite right about the "reflective paint" technique. It's called "front axial projection", and I think this was the first time it was used in Doctor Who. We'll see it used once more in the Pertwee era, and once again in McCoy's... I won't say which stories, though :)

Jon Pertwee hated dressing as a cleaning lady and playing the clown with his Doctor. It’s ironic because he was famous as a comic actor in England on tv, film, stage and radio but he wanted his performance on Doctor Who to be a very serious minded incarnation.

Eleven does pronounce it differently, however. There was talk of overdubbing it for later broadcasts/discs but it never happened for some reason. I like to think that he discovered he was saying it wrong back in this Third incarnation and corrected it later!

I suspect (hope!) that the adult form of the giant maggots was supposed to be a giant fly, as dragonflies don't undergo complete metamorphosis. Their young stage is known as a nymph, and looks a bit like a wingless and less colourful version of the adult which lives under the water.

The Green Death is a great story exploring corporate greed and how they value profit over everything else. To them, pollution is a necessary side effect of progress, and they lie and tell the public that what's best for the company is also best for them. I also love how they explore the dangers of AI and what it's lack of empathy can lead to. The BOSS was programmed by humans to ensure company efficiency and maximum profit, everything it does is to fulfill its primary function. This extends to humans too, which it sees as cattle that's only purpose is to help in its cause for global efficiency and profit. It can't understand the damage it's causing and the moral/ethical issues of what it's doing because the humans that programmed it didn't allow for that. In their greed for money, they created a monster. As y'all said, these issues are sadly still very relevant today. This would be a great story if that's all there was to it, but it also has a brilliantly written and performed sub plot with Jo leaving the Doctor. The scenes where the Doctor clearly realizes he's lost her are heartbreaking, but you can also see him understand and slowly come to accept why Jo must now leave him over the course of the story. She's been travelling with the Doctor for a long time now and has learned a lot from him and the places she's visited. The Doctor has helped Jo to see what's important and what's worth fighting for and she now wants to use that knowledge to help her own planet instead of gallivanting around the universe with the Doctor. Fortunately, Jo found the perfect companion in Professor Jones to help in her cause. A younger Doctor in her own words. The final scene between the Doctor and Jo is very subtle but extremely emotional, it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. It's like a parent learning to let go of their child. It's not just Jo that was helped by the Doctor though, she helped the Doctor too. When they first met, the doctor was quite rude and abrupt with Jo, but over time she helped him to become a much kinder and more compassionate person. The Doctor losing the grounding influence of Jo must also play a part in his sadness. That final shot of the Doctor riding off into the sunset is one of the saddest and most poignant in the show's history. The Green Death is an excellent way to end the tenth anniversary season because it encapsulates everything that's great about Doctor Who.
