Doctor Who: Empire of Death Review

My thoughts on the conclusion to Doctor Who season 1 (series 14). Did this stick the landing? Is this considered a top contender for being the best season finale ever?

The reveal of Ruby's mother was good and bad for me. Bad, because of the build up and no pay off. Good, because I didn't want another universe changing companion. Think, the impossible girl, badwolf, doctordonna, melody pond. I agree that there were too many people in UNIT not really adding anything. Jasmine Finney was wasted. I have heard talk of a UNIT spin-off so perhaps they're setting that up.

Yeah I get what you're saying, but why then build it up in the first place if it's insignificant & I think you might be on to something there with a UNIT spin-off series that's why they keep introducing more characters.

I agree with the fact about the mother. It was so ominous just to be an ordinary woman. How couldn't Sutekh find an ordinary woman? I get that if the mother was as mysterious he couldn't find her because of being attached to the tardis maybe? I don't know really. I think he was just curious because he couldn't find her too.

Her mother and that night we're extra special only because of sutekh's focus on it. And Rodger app William will still become Prime Minister. That was never erased. It will still happen

Ok but why does Ruby have memories of Roger app Gwilliam from 73 yards if it was all changed & never happened.

I enjoyed it! loved her Mum being an actual no one that was great! my major quibble was that they somehow now have the glove and rope in their pockets! how? they didn't go back to the memory Tardis they Teleported in or whatever that was! and don't get me started on the Whistle (A 2nd Doctor Recorder would have been better) Ok not Brilliant and plot holes a plenty but an enjoyable watch! oh and Who the Hell is Anita Dobson Playing?

Glad you enjoyed it😊 it was a bit hard for me to ignore a lot of the plot holes in the ep & as a classic Who fan I thought Sutekh being focused on Ruby's mother was a bit stupid, but as I said I'm glad you really dug the episode. As for the Mrs Flood true identity, I mean it could be anyone even the Black Guardian or the Master who knows.

@@thewhoview Lets hope RTD Knows lol I have seen every episode of Dr Who I was sat in front of it from 1963! Obviously memory of the first few is fuzzy lol But somewhere in my Head are all the lost episodes!

It was pretty bad. Rushed, full of holes, terrible pacing, dumb, just bloody awful, and Gatwa cried, again. Oh God I hate this crap. Hopefully the rumours of RTD being sacked are true. He needs to go.

Yeah the pacing was very slow, & I don't like that every episode the doctor has too cry, but I guess that's just the way fifteen is written.

This was far more than disappointing. It made me angry because it defiled Sutekh the Destroyer. RTD made him into a large Scooby Doo Hound that got leashed and dragged through the time vortex. It urinated over his Iconic Villain status. Despite the budget this looked far more like cartoon animation. It was awful on a grand scale. That’s before we get to the actual plot, story. Can you call it a story? More like random thoughts thrown at the screen to see what sticks. Why doesn’t Sutekh not kill the Doctor, Ruby? Is it because he’s so wrapped up in Ruby’s Mother mystery? He’s been on the Tardis since Pyramids. That is so stupid that it’s hard to believe that RTD thinks he can get away with this trash but he can. His employer’s will let him write anything. Well, I think next season another 500,000 will be wiped off the viewing figures. So many people were just watching to see if he could pull the ending off. Not only did he fail miserably but he’s angered many of that core base with this badly written tripe.

Yeah it ruins Sutekh, there was so much I thought either makes no sense or is just down right stupid in this episode. Sutekh this all powerful god won't kill the doctor & Ruby because he's baffled by the mystery of who Ruby's mother is, I can't suspend my disbelief that just makes the character stupid why would he care. The 1 thing the episode does is make me want to go back & rewatch the pyramids of Mars, & then when you watch it & you say this is what good writing looks like.

I thought it was a terrible episode. I managed to stick through thubgs with the terrible writing in Jodie's era, but this was SO bad. I do love Doctor Who, but I won't be watching after this. So, so bad.

@@JoeDouglas I'll never stop loving doctor who, but I no longer feel compelled to continue watching modern who after this. This era just wasn't for me & that's fine. You can see my feelings on this season in my ranking. 😉

@@thewhoview Agreed. The show just doesn't feel like it's for me anymore, and I don't recognise the Doctor. I agree Ncuti is a great actor, but this incarnation's character feels too far removed. If people love it, awesome, but it's not for me. Quick question; can you recommend any good Who fan/news website that didn't just focus on New Who? Not having much luck finding any.

The episode was really badly written, the plot was stupid and the acting was a bit cringe. Overall the season was disappointing. Dot and bubble, rogue and 73 yards were the best written.

Yeah the episode didn't work for me. I was yelling at the screen a lot saying this is stupid & doesn't make sense. It definitely diminishes Sutekh as a character. The resolution I thought was just incredibly lazy & ultimately I couldn't suspend my disbelief for this episode. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed those episodes 😊 most of the RTD era hasn't really been for me which is fine it's not made specifically for me, but I did enjoy boom though ☺️
